Jason Segel is seeking romantic comedy perfection for Five-Year Engagement

12.21.2010

I miss the days of a good romantic comedy.

Now it just feels like any asshole can slap together a so-called "romantic comedy" that millions of women will flock to. As a woman, I get it. Every great once in awhile some rom-com will come along and excite our interests. Anytime WHEN HARRY MET SALLY is on television, I'll tune in. It doesn't matter what part it's at. Since it's so close to Christmas, I've been wanting to re-watch LOVE ACTUALLY. "To me, you are perfect." Le sigh.

That being said even though he is working on THE MUPPETS, Jason Segel is also hard at work on the script for FIVE-YEAR ENGAGEMENT. In November, we had hardly any details on the project. All we knew was that Emily Blunt was starring, Segel and Nicholas Stroller were writing, and Judd Apatow was producing.

In an interview with EW, Segel gives some more info as well his goal for the script, “We will start shooting in April. It is a romantic comedy. Our goal is Annie Hall or When Harry Met Sally and if we get within their stratosphere of substance, we will be happy. It really dissects relationships and aims to show how complicated they are over a long period of time. This is a five-year period and in that time things change and morph and the power dynamic shifts and people wane and eyes wonder and you question everything and this movie is about that in a funny way, I hope.”

Jason Segel is the man. I really think if someone can revive the rom-com genre, it could be him.

Well, if I had to pick just one movie, it would have to be Eternal Sunshine :)

I will always love Segel because of "Undeclared", "Freaks and Geeks", and "Forgetting Sarah Marshall". Segel and Stroller make a great team, so I have no doubt that this will be great.

Extra Tidbit = High Fidelity and (500) Days of Summer.

This sounds excellent. If anyone can make an Annie Hall-esque movie, it's Segel.

As for the Extra Tiddy: Notting Hill.

I'm always up for a good romantic comedy, but I have never thought they were worth the price of actually seein them in a theater. Lucky for me, my wife agrees that they have just SUCKED for years now, so we always just take our chances on Netflix.

Some of the romantic comedies that I like:
Love Actually
Notting Hill
Shaun of the Dead (it's romantic comedy with zombies)
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
The Lake House (though not much of a comedy)
Once (not a rom-com but it's a touch romantic movie)

Like the dudes before me, 500 days of summer is the freshest in my mind. I mean I hate hipsters more than anything, Ive made it pretty verbal how much i dislike most of wes anderson's work, but it was a well-made movie. But Forgetting Sarah Marshall was fucking awesome and I have total faith in Segel and Stoller

(500) Days of Summer

It's the only romantic-comedy I've ever liked, yet is also one of my favourite films because it is the most realistic depictions of what happens in real life.

(500) Days of Summer

Fave rom-com has to be (500) Days of Summer. But that's because I'm young and naive, and I've recently been through a similar situation... God I love movies
