Jaume Collet-Serra is the next director for the live-action Akira

07.14.2011

Why won't it just go away? I'm referring to the live-action, Americanized version of AKIRA. I secretly keep hoping that I'll never have to hear news on this again, but the Hollywood cog keeps turning.

ORPHAN and UNKNOWN director Jaume Collet-Serra has been tapped to helm the live-action AKIRA. Early on Albert Hughes (THE BOOK OF ELI) was attached to direct but later exited the project due to creative issues.

Several writers have contributed drafts over time and Steve Kloves (HARRY POTTER, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN) is the latest to take a stab at it.

Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way are producing the film. Katsuhiro Otomo creator of AKIRA will serve as executive producer.

I don't think I'd be as against this if they weren't trying to completely shit on it. Hire some Japanese actors and keep the characters the same age. But I will stop my ranting since I've been down this road several times before.

Yeah, I'm done bitching about this. We all know it shouldn't be done but Hollywood could care less. From the words of the great Peter Griffin: "When (Hollywood) wants something its like sex with Kobe Bryant...You can kick and scream all you want but it's...it's gonna happen."

There are better Anime out there

I liked Akira 20 years ago when I first saw it and it is still good today, but I have difficulty seeing how it will translate to live action with all the effed up shit that happens. Ghost in the Shell (Anime Series) Is ripe and ready for picking. It would translate so much better to live action. They will dumb Akira down for the dumb audiences of today and that will ruin it. GITS is much more Tech savvy for this generation IMO.

i dont get why...

why is everyone making such a hissyfit about them turning the characters/story from japanese to american, but didn't complain about it when they did the same thing to the ring and seven samurai? or the oldboy remake... everyone is complaining about the existence of the remake, but no said anything about them americanizing it.

...and The Departed. But I was under the impression that this was still going to be set in Tokyo and have the same character names, in which case it would be weird to not have Japanese actors. Otherwise, if it's Amercanized, set in NYC or something, than its fine.

Because some movies, TAE, are not reliant on their location or the ethnicity of their characters to move the story forward. Seven Samaurai, for instance, is truly timeless, and could be set in any part of the world with any group of characters and still work.

And some movies ARE reliant on their location or the ethnicity of their characters. Usually, we don't consciously recognize which are which, but subconsciously we do. And those are the ones then get complained about.

Thus, Hollywood

Thus, Hollywood can get away with whitewashing The Ring, but can't get away with whitewashing Airbender. Or this, probably. And they'll deservedly get shit for casting Depp as Tonto for the same reason.

A live action Akira isn't needed, but it seems inevitable we'll get one sooner or later. Will most likely be a mess, but I guess we can hope.

I'm...

I know I'm in the minority but I think this has potentional. I really enjoyed the director's three films, House Of Wax, Orphan, and Unknown. He has a great style.

I'm gonna get killed for this but I was actually pretty excited about this movie. I know I'm the only one in the room but I've always found anime (even great anime apparently such as this) hard to really connect with. That being said, I've heard all sorts of amazing things about Akira, and would love if this movie turned out awesome.

And after all that, I still thumbs down because I think Serra is a terrible choice to make this movie.

For Fuck's sake!

Just give it up already! Nothing good will come of it already with all that waiting! Just look what happened to Duke Nukem Forever!

Haha, silly rabbit. No one's making an Akira movie. They are, however, making some generic dog shit about a pharmaceutical company, and a rag tag group of caucasians with names like Billy and Duncan, or whatever. Actually, it was secretly made 4 times already as the Resident Evil franchise.
