Javier Bardem in talks to play Blackbeard for Warner Bros. in Pan

11.15.2013

Joe Wright is currently in negotiations to direct PAN, and now the first casting news for the film has landed. Deadline is reporting  Javier Bardem has been approached to play Backbeard in the planned movie. Peter Pan and the natives will be rebelling against evil pirates in PAN, and it looks like their leader will be Blackbeard, not Captain Hook, in the new film.

Blackbeard and Captain Hook are slightly connected though. Hook has been described as a boatswain to Blackbeard, but did deny knowing him in the novel Peter Pan in Scarlet. This is based off of information from Wikipedia and I'm not that familiar with the books, so I can't vouch for how accurate it is, however it doesn't sound like Warner Bros. is just throwing Blackbeard in PAN for no reason.

But why would Warner Bros. go with Blackbeard as the villain when almost everyone always associates Captain Hook as Peter Pan's antagonist? If Warner Bros. is thinking about starting a franchise with PAN, I guess Captain Hook could still be in it, but not as the captain, and could appear in future films. Javier Bardem can obviously play a great villain and will make an awesome Blackbeard, but I'm just a little confused as to why the character is being used in PAN.

I will bet money that Captain Hook will be in this film but as a small role. Let's say he is even one of blackboard's crew and somehow loses his hand due to pan. Setting up the next film.

Hopefully Bardem can make him more interesting than Ian McShane did. I like Ian McShane, but his Blackbeard didn't bring anything new to the table and was a poor copy of Barbossa and Davy Jones. Of course a lot of that was due to the script, and not McShane's fault.

WHAT???? I'm a huge pan fan, so I'll watch anything once, but I thought they were finally switching them and making hook (or Blackbeard?) the good guy and pan the bad guy. They talked ab doing that the last live action pan film.l, and it was mentioned in one of the recent joblo articles ab this upcoming movie...wait what??? They didn't research the article properly? I just can't believe that

I'm sure the sequel will reveal Hook as the bigger villain and Wright is probably just waiting to use the biggest villian for later on in the story (ie like what Nolan did with the Joker in Dark Knight).

It's good casting. Bardem can do anything.

I could see them having Hook in the movie as someone working with Blackbeard and showing us how he becomes the Captain Hook that we all know and recognize. Also setting him up to be the villain in a sequel. That would be cool with me. I agree that Bardem is more than capable of this role. He is a very talented actor.

Bardem news is good news. Now if he were to play Lobo I would be really happy.

Morgan would definitely be great too, and he does deserve more big roles. But have you seen how crazy Bardem is in Perdita Durango?

Interesting pick

I could easily see them using Blackbeard to lead into the creation of Captain Hook which could easily setup a sequel down the road.

Bardem sure knows how to play an awesome villain, so we'll see where this heads - it could be interesting if the dynamic between Hook and Pan is set up while Blackbeard appears to be the bigger threat and Pan is unaware that Hook would become his ultimate nemesis. As much as people seem to dislike it, I found Pirates 4 very entertaining and Ian McShane was a very effective Blackbeard. Probably not used to his full potential, yes, but still a fun villain.
