Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep want more Oscars

It's a project that sounds like a surefire tearjerker with Oscar bait sprinkled all over it: Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep are in talks to star in the upcoming drama GREAT HOPE SPRINGS. The two would play a couple on the verge of divorce who agree on a weekend of counseling at a resort to help decide the fate of their relationship. Sounds like a real pick me up!

Originally Jessie Taylor (I AM SAM) had been attached to direct but the involvement of Bridges and Streep has brought a new directorial candidate in Mike Nichols. Streep and Nichols worked together previously on SILKWOOD and HEARTBURN and this project would mark their first project since 1986. Philip Seymour Hoffman had reportedly been interested as starring as the couple's marriage counselor but scheduling conflicts forced him to pass on the role.

Normally I don't know how interested I'd be in seeing a movie about the deterioration of a couple once dearly in love but with Streep and Bridges involved, I think I'd change my mind on that.

The project is currently set up at Mandate Pictures, which has released JUNO and WHIP IT! with Fox Searchlight, who could be the perfect home for a movie like this.

Extra Tidbit: I'm not a fan of THE GRADUATE. There, I said it.
