Jennifer Connelly is a white trash grifter in the trailer for Virginia

I love me some Jennifer Connelly, but she has gotten into this funk of playing the same characters over and over again. Well, she seems to finally be breaking out in VIRGINIA, the directorial debut for Dustin Lance Black. Check out the trailer.

Synopsis: Written and directed by Dustin Lance Black (MILK), VIRGINIA stars Jennifer Connelly in the title role as a beautiful yet unhinged single mother who struggles to raise her son Emmett (Harrison Gilbertson) while dreaming of escaping her small Southern boardwalk town. Her long time affair with the very married, Mormon Sheriff Richard Tipton (Ed Harris) is thrown into question when he decides to run for public office. Things are further complicated when Emmett begins a romantic relationship with Tiptons daughter (Emma Roberts). Virginia and the townpopulated by Amy Madigan, Toby Jones, Yeardley Smithare full of secrets and everyone knows Virginia can only keep things together for so long. VIRGINIA is a funny, touching drama that looks at the American Dream and what it takes to keep it together.

I really dig this trailer. Jennifer Connelly completely exits her normal on screen persona and plays someone who is genuinely troubled. Ed Harris is good in everything and I like the play on Mormons, small towns, politics, and gossip. Dustin Lance Black was beginning to get pigeon-holed into one genre with MILK and J. EDGAR, but here he takes similar ideas and turns them on their head.

VIRGINIA opens in theaters on May 18th.

Holy cow! I saw this movie two years ago (at TIFF) when it was called What's Wrong with Virginia. Totally forgot about it. The movie doesn't fully work by the end but I enjoyed Connelly's performance and the first half of the movie.

As a Mormon...

I was pretty surprised to see a movie with Mormon characters for once. While I'm not against what's in here as I think we can all see the story has some large caricatures in it, I still can't help but groan at some of the depictions all the same. I was a missionary in England for two years (a whole other life time ago now it seems), and I can tell you, for a fact, that a missionary will never say, "We want to give you a blessing to absolve you of your sins." That's just not what Mormons

That's just not what Mormons believe.

BUT... that line at the end when the gorgeous Jennifer Connelly asks about being a good Mormon while smoking a cigarette? Totally true, and totally classic! I lived that moment many times, and that is absolutely the truth.

I'm still waiting for the day when there will be some truly accurate depictions of Mormons and the religion in Hollywood, as I can attest, that has not at all been the case yet, and try as this film might, it's not really getting there (although I don't think that's the point of this film as this is obviously a comedy.)

The film though looks like it has a solid cast, and an interesting premise. Maybe I'll catch it when it comes on TV.

I love....

Jennifer Connelly, ever since Legend. She has stared in some shit(dark water, she's just not that into you) but i'll give it a gander any way. Requiem for a Dream will forever be indelibly etched on my mind.
