Jeremy Renner to take over the Mission Impossible franchise?

Nov. 22, 2010by: Niki Stephens

When talk of another MISSION IMPOSSIBLE started last year, it was with the intent that someone would take over in the place of Tom Cruise to re-launch the franchise.

Currently Cruise is filming the fourth installment of the series, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL. There are some newbies that have been filming alongside Cruise as well, one of them is potentially being groomed to take over the franchise.

During an interview with MTV, they asked Jeremy Renner if he was cast with the idea to take over for Cruise. The actor confirms adding, "It's a franchise to potentially take over. I can't predict the future and what they want, but that's certainly the idea."

They continued on asking if the hand-off is written in the script or if it's something that would be made apparent in a future sequel, "I can't really go into the details of the script, because that's still evolving. It's Tom's baby. He's the engine behind the thing. What happens after that, we'll see." Right now the only concern that Renner has is doing right by the franchise.

When they asked him what was the craziest stunt he had done thus far, Renner replied simply by saying, "Everything." He then elaborated on the amount of stunts that Cruise and himself had been doing, "I haven't gotten to work too much in terms of acting stuff, but the stunts have been insane. Tom has been doing loads. He's crazy, that guy. It's unbelievable. He's fearless. He's great to watch. He inspires me to want to be better. I'm training in the gym and working out and fighting and doing everything I can to try and keep up. I'm doing hand-to-hand combat, Muay Thai and kung fu and learning how to take someone out quickly. I need to look like I know what I'm doing!"

Extra Tidbit: Would you say that Renner is a suitable replacement?

That'd be one hell of a promotion

I'm am all for more and more Renner. Part of my excitement for his Oscar nod was the fact that I knew it would dump a bunch of work at his door. But people still hardly know who he is; the Hurt Locker and The Town not withstanding. That year at NYCC when I stood across a narrow hall from him and shared it with my friends, no one knew who I was talking about. Even today when I say that story I have to epilogue it with "the guy from The Hurt Locker." I know he's in the Avengers but so is everyone

This is the first mention of him possibly headlining a big budget blockbuster film franchise. Seems like a quantum leap of a promotion, which makes it sound fishy

yeah, renner is the only actor out there who could do it.
while i still would want to see some more m:is with cruise, i definitely looking forward to the franchise with my current favorite actor out there.
so can't wait for m:i4... first great spy thriller since a decade?!

Yeah...

I guess he'll do. They should keep Ving Rhames around though.

Yes!

This guy proved he can take on a major role so why not take over for the MI series? Tom Cruise has worn out his welcome and it would be cool to see him get killed in the 4th then Renner take over mid movie...classic macgruber.

Yeah, this would be cool. I dig Jeremy Renner and I also think that this franchise could be Paramount's Bond if they handle it well enough.

So far it's 2 out of 3 that have been spectacular fun but you're gonna need a couple more of those really good ones to set up a lasting foundation.

My favorite is still the first one, what an absolute blast of a movie and so damn stylish as well... the third one came close to pipping the first, but then they found a Hollywood way to let his girlfriend live. Not that I didn't like her, it's just that it would've been far more affecting had she actually been shot.

I really struggle to sit through M:I2. So boring.

I'm down for the torch to be passed. I just want more team oriented MI films, I and III were great but it isn't the Ethan Hunt show.

I like Renner. I could probably accept him any way he wants to take his career (even if he decided to usurp Josh Duhamel in the romcom department, he'd be interesting). I like that they're sort of easing us into the switch by inviting him to play along with Tom before conceivably making the change. Someone needs to step in for Johnny Depp on POTC one of these days.

yes!

This guy is a perfect replacement for tom cruise. The thing about tom cruise that is so appealing is that you know he's a hard worker and takes everything seriously, this guy has all that and could very well bring this franchise back to the top

I really dug MI3, so I'm down for a new one, but does anyone else find it odd it's slated for a December release?

Renner should be

Jason Bourne, not Ethan Hunt. Nobody cares that much about Mission: Impossible anyway. Cruise should never have made himself the "star" of that series. The whole point of M:I is that these are team missions with everyone playing their part. In that way, the Ocean's movies are more like the original M:I than Cruise's films, which could be any other generic spy-type movies.

you didn't see MI3 did you? And the first one started out like that.. but the plot involved something different.

Renner would be a good replacement. Just to mess with people, they should give him a trilogy of films on his own, but at the end of the last movie have him pull off the mask and discover it was Ethan Hunt the entire time. Mind sufficiently blown.

I like Jeremy Renner but Mission Impossible is Tom Cruise. Give Renner another franchise but leave Mission Impossible to Cruise. Just remember, you wouldn't make Die Hard without Bruce. I'm still extremely excited about MI:4 and I'm sure it'll be great.

Now all they gotta do...

....is have Ethan Hunt turn villain and have a new trilogy having Renner trying to show him the error of his ways. Or something. Just as long as Cruise is a prick villain. lol

Yes, Renner is a suitble replacement. Just watch how badass he is in the town before you pass judgement.

Extra Tidbit

I say that if the "torch has to be passed on" then Renner is more than a suitable replacement. He'd be perfect for it, even though like he said, it is Tom's "baby" and that he is the "engine" behind this whole franchise. Mission Impossible 4 is going to be the best one yet.
