Jerry Bruckheimer is still hopeful that a Top Gun sequel will get off the ground

Sep. 20, 2013by: Niki Stephens

Today we got word that Jerry Bruckheimer was splitting from Disney after a long prosperous relationship. Now it seems like there's one property that the producer was attached to that people are still curious about-- a sequel to 1986's TOP GUN.

Not that long ago, the stars had finally aligned for the project. Tom Cruise was on, Tony Scott was location scouting, and Bruckheimer was back on as producer. Sadly last Fall Scott suddenly passed away and everything just sort of fell apart. So what is the fate of the film now? Is there a possibility that it can still happen?

Bruckheimer said this in an interview with the LA Times:

Gosh, I hope so. What was the original, more than 25 years ago? Im still trying to get it off the ground.

Bruckheimer said that there was still work being done on the script which was last in the hands of THE TOWN's Peter Craig. At one point, the film was said to be "focusing on the use of drones in modern warfare".

There's no clear future for TOP GUN 2 but those looking to dive into the 80s might have to look forward to the BEVERLY HILLS COP sequel.

Was the first one really that good? No, not really. Yes, Tony Scott was a great director but I would consider this one of his weakest movies. Some of the movie is ok but most of it is cheese. Oh, and that god damn song... They must have played that "Take My Breath Away" song 10 times in that movie. If I never have to hear that song again, I will not be mad.

Scott "passed away"? Huh?

Dude committed suicide. He didn't "pass away." He deliberately, consciously ended his life. There is a difference, and I'm not meaning any disrespect to Scott by saying this. I've just never seen anyone refer to a suicide victim as having "passed away" before...

Ha that's exactly what I thought. He jumped off a fucking bridge. At the end I scrolled up to see who wrote this article, and wasn't surprised. Niki is a very poor writer in general, who often makes errors like that.

Eh. It's been too long for me to care about a sequel. I'll still see it though.

So it might turn out to be Top Gun pilots fighting unmanned drone. That does sound like Stealth.

Tony Scott was reasons #1-50 why Top Gun was both a hit in its day and stands the test of time now. Don't fuck with his legacy.

Also...Don't Ask Don't Tell has been repealed. A grand achievement, but it means any military action movie where all the characters are totally in the closet for each other completely lame. Unless Maverick and Iceman are very happily married at the start of the flick, there's no way it'd be believable.

The thing about a Top Gun sequel is if you screw up just this much, you'll be flying a cargo plane full of rubber dog shit out of Hong Kong!

Sorry, but TOP GUN hasn't aged well. It was pretty much Tom Cruise and Anthony Edwards' performances that made this film watchable; the jingoism and "no, we're not gay" subtext is more laughable than anything else.

I wouldn't want to see a sequel to this.

It is a real shame what happened to Tony Scott. It's hard to believe someone like that would take their own life, but it just goes to show that you can have it all and still be battling demons. Was it ever said why he took his own life? I believe a sequel could be taken over by another director, but it would be big shoes to fill.

As far as I remember, it was said the reason was an inoperable brain tumour... OFFICIALLY ! But there were a few other rumours...

I think once Tony Scott unfortunately died, so did this film.

If Spielberg can inherit Kubricks last project and turn it into a kitschfest why should no one be allowed to take over Top Gun?
