Jesse Eisenberg to be Lex Luthor! Jeremy Irons is Alfred in Bats vs. Supes!

Jan. 31, 2014by: Paul Shirey

Holy Bat/Super news!

Well, it looks like all the rumors of Mark Strong or Bryan Cranston taking on the role of the bald-headed villain Lex Luthor are now debunked as the unlikely choice of Jesse Eisenberg will now portray the famed foil to Superman in the MAN OF STEEL sequel, BATMAN VS SUPERMAN. In addtion to Eisenberg, veteran actor Jeremy Irons has been named to play Alfred, the steadfast butler of Batman. I'm sure this is going to set the internet on fire today. Enjoy the flames!

Here's the full release:

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Jesse Eisenberg has been set to star as Lex Luthor and Jeremy Irons will play Alfred in the upcoming Zack Snyder untitled Superman/Batman film. The dual announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, and Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

Snyder stated, “Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman’s rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940. What’s great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He’s a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions.”

The director added, “As everyone knows, Alfred is Bruce Wayne’s most trusted friend, ally and mentor, a noble guardian and father figure. He is an absolutely critical element in the intricate infrastructure that allows Bruce Wayne to transform himself into Batman. It is an honor to have such an amazingly seasoned and gifted actor as Jeremy taking on the important role of the man who mentors and guides the guarded and nearly impervious façade that encapsulates Bruce Wayne.”

Eisenberg received Academy Award®, Golden Globe Award, Screen Actors Guild Award® and BAFTA Award nominations for his starring role as Mark Zuckerberg in David Fincher’s “The Social Network.” He also starred in Woody Allen’s “To Rome with Love” and Louis Letterier’s “Now You See Me.” He next appears in “The Double” and “Night Moves.”

Irons won the Academy Award® for his portrayal of Claus von Bülow in “Reversal of Fortune.” His work in the film also garnered him a Golden Globe Award. He won an Emmy Award and a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award® for his performance in the TV miniseries “Elizabeth I,” opposite Helen Mirren, and recently starred on the small screen as Rodrigo Borgia in Neil Jordan’s highly acclaimed Showtime series “The Borgias,” for which Irons earned a Golden Globe nomination. He was recently nominated for a SAG Award® for the PBS Great Performances television miniseries “The Hollow Crown,” for his performance as Henry IV.

Snyder’s film stars Henry Cavill, reprising his role as Superman/Clark Kent, Ben Affleck as Batman/Bruce Wayne, and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince. The film also reunites “Man of Steel” stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane.

The new film is currently being written by Chris Terrio, from a screenplay by David S. Goyer. Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder are producing, with Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Wesley Coller, David S. Goyer and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers.

The film is set to open worldwide on May 6, 2016, and is based on Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster, Batman characters created by Bob Kane, and Wonder Woman created by William Moulton Marston, appearing in comic books published by DC Entertainment.

Outside the box thinking

Could be good, could be bad, but its casting like this that leads to great performances instead of decent one. Michael Shannon as Zod is a direct example from the same creators of someone that everyone knew was a great actor, but didnt really fit the role at first. Yet, he turned in a great performance. Even if you didnt enjoy MoS, I feel there is little argument of the excellent villain performance that he gave.

This will be horrible.

While I am all for Ben to play Batman, the casting of such a young Lex Luthor and an over the top actor as Alfred is ruining this movie.

Also the talentless asshat playing Wonder Woman is where the movie started to crumble.

Lex is supposed to be around the same age as Superman/Batman

Does anyone noticed that Chris Terrio looks like the official writer of the film instead of Goyer? I know that he brought by WB (and maybe got a call from Affleck himself) to do rewrites, but now i think judging by this statement that he is officially the writer of the film. Whether Goyer will end up getting his own credit for his writing effort and having Terrio as "co-writer", is yet to be seen. But with the delay of the film, maybe, just maybe, WB almost scraped Goyer's script and Terrio

Regardless, Goyer looks like he 's got his "executive producer" credit for sure. But all this, doesn't sound interesting to you for the film's development?

All those expecting Luthor to be bald...

There was a Luthor in the early 90's that had curly ginger hair. Jesse is halfway there already.

Luthor thinks he can take down Superman, right? Well, while in the comics and animated shows Lex is always shown to be a huge, musclear guy with intelligence (a "cultured thug" as Bruce Timm calls his version of the character) Eisenberg can play him as a hyper-intelligent small guy whose arrogance is so much that he thinks he could kill Superman if he needed to. Keep I'm mind this is the same guy who toppled skyscrapers in the last movie, but this little prick thinks he can take him out. I can

I can already envision a great seen where this Lex gets in Superman's face and says something like, "I'm smarter than you, I'm better than you, and I'm not scared of you." Eisenberg can play Lex as a man who goes toe to toe with Superman and doesn't break a sweat. This could work.

C'mon guys, Cranston as Lex never woulda worked. If they want this series to keep for a decade or so they needed a younger guy. I love Cranson, but he's too wrinkly and old looking to be Luthor.

Stop Comparing this with the Heath Ledger Choice!

Quote: Takes the heat off Ben Affleck now doesn't it
You know my first reaction was......As WEIRD as this decision is.......it does not compare how bad Ben Affleck is for Batman. although Jeremy Irons i great....I dont want him as Alfred....not a bad choice though.
And as Far as the heath ledger comparison.....There is a VERY good reason why people protested....one was the early pictures of him with ONLY basic makeup.....and we were led to believe this is how he would look....and it

I think Ben Affleck is just wrong for the role I dont think anything can change his no neck look and long Jay Leno chin

Not the right mix

As I see it, the main problem is how he'll fit in with the rest of the cast. In some ways, in and of itself, I don't have a huge problem with an Eisenberg Lex. Hell, in another time, another place, I'd love to see a movie with him facing off against Cavill's wide eyed youthful Supes. The problem remains that in *this* film, he'll be going against Batman, too. And I'm sorry but it's laughable to imagine fast-talking, cold and calculating douchbag Eisenberg Lex in any sort of meeting of minds

Not to put too fine a point on it but Affleck just looks dumb and his voice doesn't carry the gravitas that Bats should have. Plus, I can't see Snyder & Co writing and directing Eisenberg to do much else beyond his SN persona. Yes, Lex is cold and manipulative, cunning and plotting, but he's more than that, with a depth and certain charm. Not that Eisenberg couldn't necessarily pull that off, but in this movie he won't get a chance.

Eisenberg as Lex... He may be a decent actor that could look the part, but he doesn't have the presence to be Luthor in my opinion.

I've been okay with pretty much all the casting announcements, I think they'll mostly do fine.

The only one that confuses me is the casting for Wonder Woman. You really do need an Amazonian body type ala Linda Carter in that role, otherwise the fight sequences will take on a comedic quality.

Irons for Alfred is genius. Eisenberg for Luthor is, clearly, what none of us expected.
I'm sold.
I hope WB have some more crazy castings to announce so I can read more, I assume, grown ups freak out like 7 years who've been told they can't have pudding.

I am completely capable of not seeing a movie.
Never saw: Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Green Lantern, Star Trek 2, Anchorman 2, Kick Ass 2, World War Z, Transformers 3, A Good Day to Die Hard, Oblivion, GI Joe Retaliation. And that's just from last year, and these aren't "waited to see on DVD" - I haven't seen any of these movies, period.

This may be the most perfect casting in any movie announced this year! Just WOW! Love Eisenberg (one of my favorite actors) and both are beyond perfect for there roles. Yes Eisenberg is a bit more of the nerd than Luthor should be (his voice and demeanor aren't really right for the character). But by God is he perfect at being the smartest person in the world and tell me he isn't ideal to play someone really evil and nasty. And Iron's as Alfred. This very well may be one of the greatest

Think Gates, not Zuckerberg

Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates both suffer from Asperger's syndrome. It enables them to shut out the outside world and focus on their work but it also causes them to be socially inadequate. I could see Bill Gates running for president and winning. Bill Gates has donated a lot of money to fight AIDS in Africa and people love him for it. I can imagine Lex Luthor retiring as CEO of Lexcorp and devoting his time to the "Superman problem".

If they wanted someone smart and kind of a douche from the Social Network as Lex Luthor, why not Armie Hammer? I never thought of it before, but he has the look and personality I would expect from Luthor (going off a version similar in age to superman, like Smallville did).

Hackman played a wise cracking Luther who hung out in sewers and surrounded himself with buffoons. A 50 year old was cast as iron man. The point I'm making is to not judge a book by its cover. Let's wait until the final product.

I think the indication of Eisenberg's casting is that they're re-imagining Luthor as a tech start up billionaire (not unlike Zuckerberg) and to be fair, Hackman pulled off a curly haired Luthor in the 70's Superman, so this casting isn't that much of a stretch.

WB continues to prove that Marvel still corners the market on good casting choices.

I think part of the problem is that when we think of Lex Luthor, we think of someone who is in their 40's or 50's, is experienced, and is someone who has been playing the corporate (and political) game for a long time and his built up an extensive network of power long before Superman ever set foot in Metropolis. As of this writing, Jesse Eisenberg is 30 years old. Does a 30-year-old Luthor even make sense?

Ben Kingsley was sold to the public as the Mandarin, which many people thought was terrific casting, myself included. It wasn't until we saw the final product when we found out we were duped by the story. I wouldn't say that's a point against the casting though.

Unless you're suggesting that in Batman vs. Superman, it will turn out that Eisenberg is really just a buffoonish actor playing the role of a villainous mastermind.

The casting of this film no longer phases me.

I was excited for Spacey to play the role and was really disappointed. I'd rather be pleasantly surprised than disappointed with a favorite actor not nailing the role. Eisenberg could play a more menacing, dynamic version of Hackman's Luther.

And I'm glad Cranston didn't get it because it frees him up to be Gordon - while Cranston would've no doubt knocked it out of the park as Lex, I think he'd be a better Jim. Jeremy Irons as Alfred is a great choice, though I would've preferred Timothy Dalton who was rumoured for the part.

Interesting Choices

As soon as I read Eisenberg's name I immediately thought of Lex Luthor being a spoiled brat/Mark Zuckerberg type which didn't piss me off. Also, Jeremy Irons as Alfred seems cool. Would I have thought either of these guys for the parts? Most likely no. But, I'll take a wait and see attitude about it.

I know a lot of people are making the Michael Cera joke but I can't imagine a casting choice that would get me in a seat on opening day faster than "Cera is Luther." That would just be a spectacular campy trainwreck. Get Wiseau in as director and Supes and we got a stew going.

I don't hate it, but it's definitely one of the weirder casting choices I've heard. I'll admit he wasn't my first, or second, or third pick, but who knows, maybe he'll be great.
Plus, with the amount of characters that will be in this movie, he'll probably only be on screen for 10 minutes. [link]

Know what, as someone who felt like Man of Steel left a lot to be desired, I'm just interested in what happens here. Jeremy Irons is one of the surest bets of an actor in Hollywood, and nobody's denying that. Jesse Eisenberg, though, has proven himself to be more than was initially thought. He may not look like we imagined an actor cast as Lex Luthor would look, but he is essentially the opposite of Superman, which might work perfectly if they use him correctly. I frankly just want to see if they can give us a sequel that can properly fill in the gaps of the first movie while working toward a Justice League movie. There is nothing about this project besides Irons, Amy Adams, and Laurence Fishburne that I don't feel a little hesitant about. Not Batman, Wonder Woman, Lex Luthor, or even Clark Kent (the nerdy Clark Kent that works at The Daily Planet, not the Kansas-bred farm boy we met already).

If Eisenberg slows his speaking voice down for the part he might be easier to take. Anybody else read Grant Morrison's New 52 Action Comics run? Luthor was a younger computer genius in that. Kind of an obnoxious little prick. That has Eisenberg written all over it. Is that the Lex I wanted in the movie? No. I would have much rather seen basically a live action version of Clancy Brown's Luthor from Superman: TAS. Looks like we'll never get that in a movie... until the next reboot maybe.

The more I think, the more I like.

Someone on youtube mentioned that most self made billionaires in this age are younger genius types, like Zuckerberg, Gates, etc. Maybe they are going that angle and his obsession with wanting to be better than Superman, extreme jealousy.
But I really want the battle suit too. That would be great for a sequel, or even a team up with the likes of Amanda Waller, like the Cadmus arc in JLU.

Jeremy Irons as Alfred? Yes. A million times yes.

Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor? Highly questionable. Still he may surprise us. I'm a little concerned about the height difference though. Lex Luthor is supposed to be:
1) The richest man in the world.
2) In really good shape physically.
3) Charismatic enough to run for President and win (in the comics).
4) Tall enough to stand toe to toe with Superman and not flinch.
5) A criminal mastermind.

That was a bit left-field. I'm always more curious about the offbeat choices that films like this take in terms of casting, so this should be interesting. Eisenberg's already played a power-hungry asshole before, just give him less hair, more money and some nicer suits and I'm sure he'll be fine. I can't imagine how anyone could argue about Irons, but then again, this is the internet. I'm just wondering if they'll finally give the cinematic Alfred a pencil mustache.

I mean, I'm all for having a different take on a character, but the main villain for Superman needs to be intellectually dominant and a powerful presence, one that can persuade the general public with a single sentence. I just don't think Eisenberg has that performance in him.
I don't want to write this off yet, there have definitely been worse castings made when it comes to superhero movies, so he may surprise us all.

Eisenberg is a good actor. But I just don't think Lex Luthor is right. Maybe Jimmy Olsen. First-I think he is too young. I'm sure they will go with the whole Rich young kid who isn't trusting thing, but I truly feel that an actor who is at least 35 or looks 35 or older would have been better. Second-He's 5'7". When he stands toe to toe with Superman he's going to look goofy. Lex should be menacing. Not that he needs to match Supes physically, but at least come close in terms of height.

If we ever get to where they would battle, with Lex in the kryptonite suite it's going to look ridiculous. Final point- Esienberg bald feel like he'll look more like Seth Green as Dr. Evil's bald kid. Not Lex Luthor, the greatest criminal mind of our century. Maybe it will work out, but I'm just not seeing it. Any time you'd feel like someone looks like Jimmy Olsen, they shouldn't be Lex Luthor.

Damn, this is great casting for both characters. I like the different take on Luthor a lot. Eisenberg's style of acting is going to fit the billionaire genius very well. Also, I think hiring an Oscar caliber talent like Eisenberg is a great thing too. And Irons as Alfred is perfect casting, he was born to play that role, especially if he's considering that alfred is EX (British) SIS.

So we're getting an older seasoned Batman but one extremely young Lex? Did Snyder pencil in a DeLorean too?

Kudos to the prophet that inserted Irons as Alfred in the fan-made trailer.

I can definitely see Luthor being "Mark Zuckerbergesk", this is definitely inspired casting, and I like it. And Irons is an amazing talent, he'll be a great Alfred.

At first, I was "WTF" but after a few minutes,

Eisenberg grew on me as Lex Luthor. I can really see it as a variation of his Mark Zuckerberg (sp?) character from THE SOCIAL NETWORK: the arrogant, self-made geek who has a hate-on for Superman. Luthor had to bust his tail for everything he has while Superman had it seemingly handed to him on a platter - there's some real motivation right there.

If Michael Caine can rock Alfred, then there's no reason why Jeremy Irons can't do it as well. The director just has to keep Irons'

At least we know Jesse Eisenberg IS playing Lex Luther right!?!

Remember when everyone raved in glory and thought Ben Kingsley was the PERFECT Mandarin, and look at the crap Marvel did with that pile of dung.. SMH.

Irons as Alfred is brilliant!!! But Jess as Lex....hmmmm

I agree 100% with a previous poster...Jess does not "inspire confidence". He is the complete opposite of confidence. He did have a decent confident scene in Social Network, in the lawyer meeting, but in all reality a firm bitchslap would have shut his mouth plain and simple, and it wouldn't even have to be delivered by a GOD in a red cape. Lex should also be Wayne's bald evil double. A specimen of perfect human brains and brawn, the latter of which Jess is seriously lacking. He is not in the

He is not in the least bit intimidating, maybe in a "my daddy will sue yer daddy" type of way. I am not "hating" at all, just stating my opinion. I am curious to see how this pans out. I would have loved to see Michael Rooker in the Lex role, he would have killed it.

Everyone needs to cut this "everyone was against Heath Ledger" myth bullshit. The reaction to Ledger as Joker was not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. Read the original 2006 article on Aint it Cool News, and you'll see most people were actually okay with Ledger being cast as Joker. Some even called it brilliant casting. [link]

AICN is one of the most popular movie websites out there, and it is also the epitome of fanboy rage. So yes, the reactions on that site mirror the reactions across the web pretty accurately.

Thank you. I keep hearing people say that no one wanted Ledger as Joker, but I don't remember it being like that at all. I actually remember people embracing it rather well. Actually, people were far more upset over the casting of Topher Grace as Eddy Brock.

You must be in bozo land or have terrible memory or be in denial. ALOT of people did not want him as the Joker. And those who deny that ever happened are usually the ones who made the biggest stink.

Well, The_ConMan, you can click that link and read the talkbacks from the day of the announcement of Ledger as The Joker on one of the most popular movies sites on the web. The response wasn't that bad. Fanboys just like to remember that way so that can say "remember when Ledger was cast!?" whenever Snyder announces another horribly miscast role.

People are even starting to say that fans were against Bale's casting, when nothing could be further from the truth. Bale was fanboys #1 choice

i know a lot of people are going to hate it, but I'm excited that they are willing to take chances.

Read alot of the comments on here, mostof them saying this dude doesn't have the "charisma" to play Lex, or this could be another "Heath Ledger" thing, which I have to admit is getting old when it comes casting news, not everything is a "Ledger" But the one thing I haven't seen mentioned much is how weird this dude might look with a bald head. I keep picturing it in my head and all I can see is a cancer patient. This movie is gonna be interesting.

WTF WB

Seriously what is going on with this movie? Are they just picking names out of hat? Are they trying to troll fanboys? Maybe come April 1 they will be like, "We freaking April fooled you!". Only one can hope.

PS. Irons as Alfred is pretty cool actually.

Ya know I have know problem with this I like the idea of the small skinny self made worm in killer clothes walking up to the mountain of good looks and abs/captain of the football team that is Superman who just WRECKED a damn city and being like fuck you I don't like you I can beat you because I'm smarter then you. Plus since he is Lex Luthor him sitting across from Bruce Wayne and tossing that same attitude at somebody who is at the same level as Lex business wise. Good choice in my opinion.

Cranston would be cool but let's face it Walter White would have beaten Superman long ago and Lex keeps on failing.

You were wrong about Ledger, you were wrong whit Christian Bale not being a good Batman, you were wrong with Christopher Nolan being a bad choice to direct. Even before then internet was popular, people were bitching about Micheal Keaton being Batman, they were wrong, even Christopher Reeve as Superman got complaints WRONG!!!!!
Want examples form outside the Superhero genre, people said Jim

Eisenberg is a great actor, he'll be perfect. This is a reason why there are talented, smart people making these decisions and you are at home in jambes trolling the internet (It's my day off from being one the talented smart people, that's why I'm here). We use to have to wait until a film came out to determined if it sucks or not, but now you can tell if it's gonna suck before a single frame has been shot? Give it up.
Bottom line, you think it's a bad choice, you think it's gonna suck, stay home. I can't wait to see it.

Yeah I'll give you that on the voice thing because I'm hearing him do Lex lines in my head like when he tells off the joker and it does kind of sound funny him saying something like "aliens fear me and worlds and bow to me" or something to that effect. But, hey I didn't see Ledgers voice coming and I heard joker completely different so we will see.

Well, it's certainly surprising. Personally I loathed Man of Steel and have negative anticipation for this movie anyway, so maybe some unusual casting like this could at least shake things up, and make the film a little more interesting. That's in response to the Eisenberg casting, by the way--the Irons casting is less off the wall and also just good goddam casting.

Honestly, the kind of casting this movie has been getting reminds me of the days of Schumacher. Seems like WB is reverting back to its old ways.

Regarding the Ledger comparisons. Remember, everyone said "In Nolan We Trust" for a reason. No rational person would ever say that for Snyder. Nolan made some of the best examples of modern cinema (even before Batman). Snyder makes candy coated shit. He calls them films, but they are shit.

Actually many people were saying "In Nolan we trust" in regards to Man of Steel. When it wasnt what they expected, they then said this wasn't a Nolan movie and that it was Snyder to blame. Just saying.

I like Eisenberg and think he's a talented actor, but this casting doesn't exactly inspire confidence. Maybe if he had a role outside of a jittery wimp. You know, the opposite of Luthor.

Inspired Choice. Hater's...just remember Ledger's casting in 2006.

We know the dude can play eccentric, controlling & narcissistic...sounds perfect for Luthor. WB going way younger in age being the major twist for me. Would love to have seen Kevin Spacey back in the role (Sorry hater's..."Returns" was awesome!) but I think Eisenberg will do fine in the part.

And as for Irons as Alfred...Shit! Enough said! 100% perfect casting there.

Maybe they give him the 300 workout and Xerxes voice.
I guess the movie would turn our more of a Superman Vs Batman Vs MANDARK (from Dexters Laboratory) lmao
