JGL joins Inception

04.24.2009

James Franco has been forced to drop out of a starring role in Christopher Nolan's INCEPTION because of scheduling issues and stepping in to take his place will be Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He joins the previously cast Leonardo DiCaprio, Cillian Murphy, Marion Cotillard and Ellen Page in the secretive sci-fi flick. All we know about the film at this point is that it is a) sci-fi, b) takes place with the "architecture of the mind" and c) some of the character details like DiCaprio plays a CEO while Gordon-Levitt will play one of his associates. Nothing, however, is known about Murphy's character and considering he can be a creepy dude, I take that as a sign that he's up to some creepy business. Nolan is directing and producing the film based on a script that he wrote (but did he base it on any previously existing material?...). Filming on the project is expected to begin this summer with a 2010 release date planned.

Extra Tidbit: DiCaprio and Gordon-Levitt were once rumored to be starring in Warner Bros.' live-action AKIRA remake.

in response to bamboozled, I guess if JGL played the Joker in a relatively small role in Batman 3, I could make my peace, but I just don't think they need another film with the Joker front and centre, especially with Ledger having passed away. We were left with his tremendous performance, and why should we try to replicate or add to the performance with someone else. It would be like... replacing Samuel L. Jackson in a Pulp Fiction 2.

Agree: Nolan is testing for a Joker

Franco origially and now JGL. Perhaps he had them both in mind for the Joker. JGL obviously has more of the resemblance of Ledger. But they have both proven to be very versatile actors. Either one would have to put on a few pounds. And it'll likely work for the majority of the audience, assuming the Joker will not have that big of role in Batman 3. And then in Batman 4, once people accepted a new actor, the Joker could have a bigger role again in all the chaos.

I've been telling all my friends since TDK came out that if Joker was re-casted it would be Joseph Gordon-Levitt. It's funny how people see my point now... I wonder if this is a test run by Nolan?

Awesome casting choice. JGL is one of the better actors working today. I'm eager to see what he does with Cobra Commander in the upcoming G.I. JOE flick.

And while I have to agree with Vnqshr regarding The Joker, if there's anyone that could honor Ledger's performance and continue it, it would be Joseph Gordon Levitt.

Oh my god, this film just keeps getting better and better! I absolutely cannot wait.

eddict, I totally agree with you that JGL looks like Ledger's (younger) twin, but I kind of hope that they leave the Joker be. They may reference him or something, but honestly I think they should just go with something new and leave Heath's amazing performance as the Joker alone.
