Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler reportedly being sought for Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy

Jan. 23, 2013by: Paul Shirey

The casting race for Marvel's upcoming GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY continues, still with no official announcements.  Now, it seems that Marvel is putting feelers out for some heavy hitters, namely that of Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler. The two comedic actors are being sought for unspecified roles (or perhaps the same role), according to Latino Review.

My money would be on both actors being "felt out" for Rocket Racoon, a role that will no doubt be all CGI and in need of a strong, comedic talent to carry the weight.  Sandler or Carrey would fit that bill well, although my choice would be Carrey.  Sandler's been doing the same silly voices for decades without showing much range.  Carrey, on the other hand, has a more deft touch in both the comedic and dramatic.

Director James Gunn has deflected rumors right and left, so I wouldn't be surprised if he deflects this one, too.  However, that's part of his job at the moment, and will be for a while.  Keeping things secret is no easy task.

LR is also reporting that three more actors have joined the battle for the role of Peter Quill aka Starlord, the human leader of the Guardians.  Thus far, we've heard of everyone from Joseph Gordon-Levitt to Joel Edgerton to Jim Sturgess and more for the role.  Now, you can toss in Wes Bentley, Cam Gigandet, and Chris Lowell, who are all apparently testing for the role.

It seems that Marvel is very keen on locking down the perfect player for Starlord, which is consistent with their methods on previous films.  Anyone remember the casting race for Captain America?  I think the fact that they're looking for the right fit is a good sign for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, so it actually instills confidence in the project, rather than taking it away.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is slated to open on August 1, 2014.

Extra Tidbit: Who would you choose to voice Rocket Racoon; Carrey or Sandler? Neither?

Neither.

There are plenty of talented and funny voice actors out there already. Carrey and Sandler should just stick to doing fart-joke movies for 5 year olds.

Like I said, fart-joke movies for 5 year olds. That's all they do now. Yes, in the past both may have dabbled in drama, but most comedians do (remember The Razor's Edge with Bill Murray?) at some point in their career. I still don't want either of them near this movie.

Fart-joke movies for 5-year-olds... You mean, like 'Eternal Sunshine' and 'The Truman Show'? Yes, Carrey seems to display classic symptoms of insecurity (and I think he's admitted to suffering from being bi-polar) and I think his reaching out into dramas at an early stage in his career was a sign that he was striving to prove himself -- but his early dramatic work was pretty good. It's only recently that ALL his choices have begun to, well, suck. I think he had a bit of a breakdown recently and

It's only recently that ALL his choices have begun to, well, suck. I think he had a bit of a breakdown recently and the whole Jenny McCarthy thing probably didn't help much. But he is talented. Sandler, on the other hand? Well, he tried in Punch-Drunk Love and Reign Over Me (and imo succeeded in both, especially the former) but I can't imagine him really 'trying' in a movie like this. He'd probably be doing his usual lazy shtick and I'd take Carrey over that for sure. But neither of these actors seem particularly well-suited for this type of film. Then again, maybe the vibe is more comedic than we're expecting? Meh.

A CGI raccoon?!

That is incredibly insensitive to all of the struggling Raccoon actors in Hollywood who can barely get hired outside of movies like Furry Vengeance. On a more serious note, if this movie wants any credibility they should drop Cam Gigandet from consideration. He is a terrible actor.

I'd love to see Jim Carrey snag a part in the Marvelverse, and the prospect of a Carrey-Gunn teamup sounds just too good.

Lady You're Scaring Us!

If the casting is so secretive and serious, they shouldn't be considering Adam Sandler. Anyone that grew up with Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore will hear that voice in what should be a pretty serious comic book movie.

Please...

...don't ruin something that could possibly be good. Guardians of the Galaxy is already getting a lot of criticism from numerous people, putting someone like Sandler or Carrey (even though I love Jim to death) would probably be a death sentence for the movie, especially if they hire Sandler. There are a lot of actors out there that would make a much better choice in my opinion.

Marvel has chosen very wisely so far in regards to cast. Don't let people think Marvel is going the wrong route

Part of the charm of Rocket Raccoon is the irony. They should get someone tougher instead of a funny guy. I think one of the video games hired a Ray Winstone sounding dude to play Rocket. If they want someone funny they should go angrier like Denis Leary. In fact, I always envisioned Rocket as being in the same vain as the Ladybug from A Bug's Life.

Please no Sandler. After all the shit he has done in the last couple of years, he does not deserve a role like this. If they went with Carrey, I would be fine with it since he is actually talented and funnier than Sandler. But I do think that Rocket Racioom could be voiced by a dramatic actor who also does comedy very well too. For example someone down below already mentioned Sam Rockwell who would be perfect. His voice would easily fit the persona of the character. I would just like to see

As for Star Lord, please no Cam Gigandet. The guy is not a talented actor and would be terrible for Star Lord. My pick for Star Lord is still Michael Rosenbaum, Joel Edgerton, John Krasinski, Jack Huston, or Lee Pace.

No Sandler

Adam Sandler has almost no range in his voice. His voice in Hotel Transylvania was okay, at best. Jim Carrey is uninspired. I agree with The_Soloist with regards to Willem Dafoe. As for Star-Lord, Wes Bentley is an interesting choice.

These are terrible choices. Someone mentioned below that the funny thing abour Rocket Raccoon is the irony of this small animal being really tough. I assume the idea is to use Rocket as some sort of comedic relief for the film, in which case I would say Denis Leary! That guy has some of the greatest comedic timing for an action movie, and has one of the toughest voices ever. And it would be the best thing that year in movies to see a small raccoon go on a Denis Leary rant around a space

Those are the two best options for this character in my opinion.

Nail down the casting for Starlord already

Hearing about the casting details of Starlord is becoming as annoying as all the articles about who is NOT directing the next Star Wars film. They have had some great actors come in already to read for this character, I find it really hard to believe they can't find the right fit. All I know is two things, if they want to have any luck with this round of casting, eliminate Cam Gigandet right away. There is no way that guy is going to carry a movie like this. And also, why have they not

He's done with Lone Ranger, I think he's proven enough already that he's ready to take on a leading role, and the guy has the pefect look for this role.

It always amazes me that Hollywood would rather go with some big name actor and pay a whole bunch of money to voice a character rather than an actual voice actor. I get the whole marketing angle and star power, but Rocket Raccoon already has a voice actor in Greg Ellis and he does a fantastic job. Why not just use him? The film will have plenty of other actors, including big names, and Greg has already done the character several times. His voice is perfect for it and I am sure he'd be cheaper

Get a respected voice actor for the role

cast a Hollywood name for Starlord and get a voice actor with real credibility for Rocky. Freeden mentioned Greg Ellis; I'd also throw Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, Frank Welker, Bruce Greenwood and several others into the mix. Most of those guys can run rings round most Hollywood names in the voice booth in any case.

I've seen a lot of good choices mentioned, but most are actors who have done voices for animated characters in one or more films already. I'd rather them choose someone who's voice isn't already instantly recognizable. How about Joel McHale?

Perhaps I'm not familiar enough with GotG, but when I see an anthropomorphic raccoon and think about what kind of voice he would have, in my head I don't hear it as clear and melodious. It should be scratchy and gutteral, yet still intelligible. I think someone like Andy Serkis would be a better fit.
