Jim Carrey to rob armored cars in action-comedy Loomis Fargo for Napoleon Dynamite director

Oct. 16, 2012by: Paul Shirey

Looks like Jim Carrey may be catching the action-comedy bug, as he is currently filming KICK ASS 2: BALLS TO THE WALL and is in negotiations to topline the armored car heist pic, LOOMIS FARGO.  Set to be directed by Jared Hess (NAPOLEON DYNAMITE, NACHO LIBRE), the script originally came from Emily Spivey, then was rewritten by Jody Hill and Danny McBride, with a final pass coming from Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer.  Hill and McBride, the creative duo behind HBO's Eastbound and Down are always a selling point for me, so to have their hands in this makes the deal even sweeter.

The pic "is based on the true story of four dim-witted Southerners who pulled off one of the biggest heists in American history, robbing $17 million from a Loomis Fargo armored truck."  Carrey would play "Dave Ghantt, a military veteran and night guard at the armored car company Loomis Fargo, who served as the ringleader of the band of thieves."

This sounds like the right kind of movie for Carrey at this stage of his career.  He's played it relatively low key of late and I think a great way to re-emerge onscreen is to sort of reinvent himself, while still sticking with his physical comedy antics.  He'll next be seen in the magician comedy THE INCREDIBLE BURT WONDERSTONE with Steve Carrell and Olivia Wilde, which is set to open on March 15, 2013.

Production is likely to begin on LOOMIS FARGO in April 2013.  More as this develops.

Extra Tidbit: Who would you like to see Carrey work with? I'd like to see him do an R-rated Todd Phillips comedy, myself.

Personally, I think Carrey needs to get away from comedy altogether for a long while (with the exclusion of Dumb & Dumber To). His schtick sort of ran dry like 5 years ago, and for someone who can be as talented of a dramatic actor as he is, grasping at straws to remain a big comedy star seems like a big waste of time to me. I'm sure he misses the days when he'd topline Bruce Almighty and make like $30 million (or however much he made), but those days are gone I'm afraid.

Jim Carrey in a crime-comedy based on a true story set in Charlotte, North Carolina co-written by the duo of Hill and McBride (though who knows how much of their work still exists on the page)? Sounds like my kind of movie. While I did like "Napoleon Dynamite" the first time or two that I saw it, Jared Hess doesn't sound like he's been the most reliable break-out comedy director. But at least he's working with a story I'm assuming is strong enough, and with an actor who I'm always rooting for.

It could wind up being just a nice try, but for the moment I'm hoping it will be better than that.

Sounds fun. Carrey is so up and down for me, that it's hard to say what I'd like to see him in, because I really don't care. I really did think his performance in "I Love you Philip Morris" was underrated though, and this seems interesting enough.
