J.J. Abrams teases more Star Wars: Episode VII casting news: plus Chewie!

05.05.2014

Yesterday was the sacred day for all Star Wars fans and Disney/Lucasfilm dropped some nice little tidbits over the last week.  The biggest report hit April 29th when official casting news came our way.  Most of the names we had heard over the past few months, but there were still some welcome surprises in the form of Andy Serkis and Max von Sydow.  On May 4th, the official trailer hit for the upcoming Star Wars: Rebels TV show (which you can check out here).  Honestly, I'm more curious to check out this show than the Clone Wars that came before it.  Perhaps the familiarity of a rebellion fighting against classic stormtroopers is playing a factor?

Yesterday also saw a nice little greeting from writer/director J.J. Abrams as well as writer Lawrence Kasdan.  They took some time out wish us all a happy Star Wars day, and also happen to mention that more casting news will be announced.

I'm thrilled just to see the man who penned THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK working alongside Abrams, but am definitely itching to get some more casting information (Lando please!).

Meanwhile, on the official Star Wars Instagram, this picture of a familiar character standing alongside Disney executive Bob Iger was posted:

The co-pilot is looking as classic as he ever did, although I was expecting a few more grays.  Good genes, I suppose?  This is only the beginning, however, as we can expect plenty of more production photos to hit as production heats up with the return to the classic space saga.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII, starring Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow lands in our galaxy December 18, 2015.

I'm a nerd for knowing this but....

Wookies live to be about 250-300 years old. So 30 years wouldn't really age Chewie

No one is ever happy!!!!

All I ever hear on this site whenever someone tries to re-imagine a film or put their signature on it is a lot of bitching and complaining about what they are doing wrong. Can we all just agree that its bad ass that we are finally getting a new Star Wars Franchise from a man that at least understands Sci-Fi? There are much worse directors out there that the studio could have used. It seems most everyone here thinks they can do a much better job if they were given a greenlight to direct. In my

There are much worse directors out there that the studio could have used. It seems most everyone here thinks they can do a much better job if they were given a greenlight to direct. In my opinion most everyone here over thinks these films, and I'm sorry if this kind of information is what keeps you all awake at night tossing and turning wondering why these directors are doing what they are doing. WHO CARES? It's just a movie for godssake!! I cant believe how ruthless people can be over something so small and unimportant. How about we all just relax and be thankful that we have the luxury to be upset about something as ridiculous as who is playing Spock now, or why J.J. Abrams uses so much flare in his films. I understand having an opinion about something, but some of you really take this shit personally, like Abrams walked up to you and slapped you in the face. Now I'm a huge Star Wars Fan, but in no way do I ever feel the need to attack people just because they tried something different and failed. Isn't that human nature. Trust me if these films do not succeed and they suck, the sun will come up tomorrow.

One more note, if it wasn't for that "fat piece of shit George Lucas" we would never have a Star Wars Universe, so please give the guy a break.

the internet has given those few ruthless critics the power to be heard loudly. It doesn't mean they are right, it just means they can put their opinions out louder without any repercussions. Go stand on a street corner and yell out "george lucas is a fat piece of shit" and see how long it takes for the cops to come by and tell you to move on because you are disturbing the peace. The 'net? Nope. Anyone can say anything they like, no repercussions. Just accept it and move on.

You make a good point but some people have a personal connection to certain films or franchises. They feel strongly one way or another. And this site is geared towards that. I don't think personal attacks are good I have been getting some myself for voicing my thoughts. But that is what this site is all about.

I mean look at sports. Ppl get really bent out of shape over stuff. Soccer fans are crazy. Ppl die as a result. IMO I don't give a fuck about soccer so I think it's foolish how crazy

I don't think ppl hate JJ. I don't. I just think he is an overrated director. I don't wish harm upon him or anything.

Anyway you're main point is that at least there are new Star Wars movies coming out. So that's one good thing.

This is almost surreal.

i was born in 1977 when the first Star Wars cam out, and I believe ROTJ was my first SW theater experience. I can't believe we're getting the original trio back! I have more faith in JJ Abrams than George Lucas. I love what he's done with Star Trek despite the complaints from hardcore nerds. One thing though, I want there to be fewer, but more personal/bad ass lightsaber fights. so you didn't like the 1000 lightsaber battles - you want it to be more like the original trilogy that you grew up with that has more of story and more meaning in the battles and characters you care about etc.

well that's what trek fans wanted and JJ didn't do it. So its ok to change star trek because you think its for nerds, but you want star wars to be more true to the original because you think its for everyone?

sorry I am not trying to be a dick, but it seems that everyone is on board

I want both franchises to be what they "should" be, if JJ does it, then that's cool, but if he doesn't, if he makes the star wars movies even dumber than the prequels, with meaningless action and crap characters, then you will be pissed right? Would that give me the right to say "these star wars nerds just complain all the time."

anyway, lets hope JJ actually makes star wars like it should be made and not like what he did with star trek.

The difference is they rebooted Star Trek with a new cast playing the original characters, and JJ did the best he could with that. You will never keep fanboys happy that way.The new SW is a sequel using the original cast as well as introducing new characters, which is a big difference than a reboot. I would feel differently about this if they went the reboot way and cast young actors as Han, Leia & Luke. Basically what I'm trying to say is that Star Trek has two solid efforts under it's belt,

Basically what I'm trying to say is that Star Trek has two solid efforts under it's belt, and plenty of room for future improvements. If you have to replace beloved characters with young actors, they did a pretty friggin good job. SW on the other hand is going to give us what we've been wanting to see for more than 30 years. The further adventures of our favorite sci-fi characters.

I will agree that now that they have the Khan storyline out of the way, it would be nice to see the crew tackle another original antagonist, and have the, start making their own legacy.

My kid saw Chewbacca's picture and immediately yelled, "Wookie!"

So yes, I'll be seeing this flick as soon as it hits theatres. J.J. Abrams has been doing everything right so far, from the script writers to the cast. I could not be more buzzed to return to the STAR WARS universe.

Chewie is supposed to be like 200 years old during the Battle of Yavin 4.

So 30 years wouldn't have aged him THAT much. But I see what you're saying. This is also why I would argue for Peter Mayhew NOT being ideal to cast, because an old cripple should not be running around in that costume.

Michael Arndt and Lawrence Kasdan writing the script?

Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Peter Mayhew, Anthony Daniels returning, plus talented newcomers John Boyega, Andy Serkis, Oscar Isaac and Max von Sydow?

Oh yeah: pull the plug on this abortion. J.J. Abrams is getting it all wrong. [/sarcasm]

Lucas also ruined it. But at least it was his to ruin. Anyway, the cast returning and all has NOTHING to do with JJ. It may turn out to be good, but he really hasn't made any movie that I think is that great. And when he does something that is part of a franchise, his is usually the worst. IE Mission Impossible 3, the Star Trek films. He really doesn't add much to the films he makes. It's usually just changing around stuff and not adding anything.

Like with Trek - all he did was mess around

I will watch Star Wars in the theatre and if its good I will eat my words. But for now, I am not excited.

Also, no Lando???? He is my fave character and he is not returning - so that isn't helping much either.
Also, there is no Lando.

j-man, you lose all credibility if you claim MI3 is worse than MI2, or that Star Trek is worse than Search for Spock or The Final Frontier.

Also, its been pretty widely reported that Abrams and Kasdan revisited Arndt's script mainly to give the original cast beefier parts in ep. VII (as opposed to glorified cameos). So saying that the cast returning has "NOTHING" to do with Abrams is technically correct since they would've likely been in the film without his input, but its a little

MI3 is a bit worse than MI2 IMO. Though 2 is bad ill give you that.

Also saying that one trek film is better than another isn't really the point. The entire purpose of Star Trek to the core was changed by JJ and he added nothing to replace it. There was no social commentary and no exploration - that was the main thing about star trek - having a bunch of action is fine in other scifi movies, but its not star trek. I would also say on the record that into darkness was a very entertaining

If he takes the same approach with star wars (which he probably wont) it would piss people off.

To the comment about ppl like me ruining films - that makes no fucking sense. We are discussing our thoughts on a site that is about sharing your opinions. I am not bitching I am making arguments. Also telling people to go fuck themselves shows how immature you are - thanks for letting us all know!

Also Search for Spock is my second favorite of the trek films (just of the record).

J-man, everyone is entitled to their opinion. We just happen to be on opposite sides of this one (especially about MI3 vs MI2, 3 was better by leaps and bounds, 2 was barely comprehensible).

True, the Star Trek series have all been about exploration and social commentary, but aside from STTMP (and STIV if we are talking about social commentary alone), the rest have been action/adventure movies. Abrams didn't really change much of what is clearly Star Trek's established movie formula.

That's no biggie in my book, and certainly not a sign that he would mishandle a Star Wars movie.

JJ Abrams didn't ruin Star Trek, the terrible writers and producers did. George Lucas also didn't make Star Wars, the Academy Award Winning FX artists (whose award winning work would later be covered by CGI), the Editors, and then later Lawrence Kasdan & Irvin Kershner made Star Wars what it is.

yellow - for sure, but I feel that JJ could've done his own series of star trek based on his own characters to continue the brand - the studio wanted him to go back to the roots of trek and change it from there - that I don't agree with - and he had something to do with it so that's that.

I will settle on both MI2 and 3 being equally bad. hahahaha - that's the best I can do!

Anyway I enjoy going back and forth with someone of an opposing opinion!

Anyway, I just wanted trek to be something new - like now I have to compare new spock (who I HATE) with old spock (who I love) they should've just started after voyager and go with something new and make it action if you want, but I don't like spock chokeslamming kirk and or other characters. WTF was that????

To the comment about writers to be blamed etc - well the same could be said for joel Schumacher and batman - he was forced a lot by the studio yet everyone blames him for batman and robin - he is the head guy and like it or not the director gets the praise if its good, and gets crapped on if its bad.

I am a trekkie to an extent - its only boring to those who don't want to pay attention while watching a film. I suppose 2001 is a boring film too.? Whatever, you only prove my point - if you think star trek is boring and you liked JJ's take - then its not star trek.

lets suppose he makes star wars (which in your opinion is not boring right?), well lets say he makes it more like star trek (ie boring) then I can say - hey i like the boring star wars - and if you don't like it I will just say

I think SW was ruined in 1999 and I don't see how Abrams can repair that mess. Besides the fact that I didn't like any of his films and don't think he's a talented director at all, I think the originals were masterpieces because they were unlike anything before them, but in 2015 everything has virtually been done and I have no faith in Abrams being the one man who can put out something fresh. Lucas tried with the prequels, he failed. Ridley Scott tried with Prometheus, he failed. Spielberg

Lmao@ jman: As a huge fan of STNG I love what Abrams has done with Star Trek. Trekkies are just butt hurt because Abrams made Star Trek mainstream. His two movies are much better than the other Trek films, yes even Wrath. Abrams and Kasdan are going to knock Star Wars out of the park. When Ep VII is rolling out a 200 mill plus weekend I'm sure they and most people won't give a flying fuck what fanboys think.

Happy to amuse you. My take is that you are desperate to be cool and now that Star Trek is cool you feel happy even tho it's been completely changed. The funny thing is I don't even love Star Trek I am a horror movie guy and whovian (that's doctor who) but I cant figure out these Trekkies that accept his version of it.

Anyway have a nice life.
