JJ Abrams and Paramount waste no time announcing a Lance Armstrong biopic

Jan. 18, 2013by: Alex Maidy

Forget vampires or zombies; the latest Hollywood trend is disgraced sports heroes. First Brian De Palma and Al Pacino announce they are making a movie about Joe Paterno and now JJ Abrams is working on a Lance Armstrong biopic.

Deadline reports that Paramount and Abrams' Bad Robot will produce a film version of the upcoming book CYCLE OF LIES: THE FALL OF LANCE ARMSTRONG. The book was just recently pitched to a publisher and has not even been written yet, so who knows if this news will still be relevant enough for a studio picture by the time it is finished.

For those of you who have the internet but never visit any non-movie sites, Lance Armstrong won a record number of Tour De France cycling titles. He has been surrounded for years by rumors of failed blood tests that indicated he used performance enhancing drugs. In an interview with Oprah last night, Armstrong finally admitted that he did cheat to win those titles. Armstrong is also a cancer survivor whose charity Livestrong has inspired millions.

This Paramount project comes after Sony's failed attempt at an Armstrong movie featuring Jake Gyllenhaal in the starring role. That project fell apart prior to the recent revelations from Armstrong.

Would you be interested in seeing an Armstrong movie? (also, if you've got any funny title ideas, post them below!)

Extra Tidbit: I am waiting for the Manti Te'o movie, CATFISH 2.

Well there be blue lens flares in broad daylight? I guess there might not be if JJ Abrams isn't directing.

The guy is a Sociopath, the interviews with Oprah made that clear.

In some way that explains why he was so driven and so utterly callous in dealing with others. A movie showing this, rather than some 2 hour dick sucking would be interesting. I'm a Brit with little interest in cycling or Armstrong either, I'm interested in unusual characters though.

Dude loses a ball, takes drugs, and rides his bicycle around France. Sounds like the fake Seinfeld film "Cry, Cry Again."

Lance Armstrong or Stretch Armstrong...both are bad idea's. WHO CARES!! He's human, he lied and cheated to win, he's no different than any sports player that juices. We don't need a movie promoting him.

At least unlike other J.J. Abrams movies, we know what this is about, and how it ends, before any trailers or reviews :D

I think him lying about his career has gotten him more fame than the fame he already had.

honestly, they should just call the film, "Lance fucked up, here's how"

You can call it...

"One nut."
"The story of the money shot, short."

I agree with McConaughey as Lance but I'm pretty sure they are good friends but I think that would be very interesting. Regardless of his decisions the man had been through a lot and would make for an entertaining film. Everybody's human.

I got it!!

Matthew McConaughey as Lance . Both from Austin area. We already know he can get thin for a role. Wouldn't work if they were close friends however.

I'd only watch this if it was a sci-fi combo movie in which Lance Armstrong gains powers of elasticity, and becomes Stretch Armstrong.

To be honest, I don't care much about the news. But who would I like to see as Armstrong? Guy Pearce.

Who cares?

From a viewer standpoint, is there really an interest in either one of these projects? With so many other options to watch, why would I waste time watching a two hour movie about something I can read about in a two minute article? Seems like such a waste of time from two of our better film makers.

Ugh

I personally am sick of hearing about this constantly. People treat him like a terrorist as of late. Sure, he lied. He got his medals stripped and I've heard they're even seeking legal action against him. Why? Strip the medals and send him on his way. Cycling for miles upon miles upon miles is a damn feat, regardless of performance-enhancing drugs. Ah well. I can say no more...Hollywood (and the media) loves controversy and exploitation.
