J.J. Abrams can work on both Star Wars: Episode VII and Star Trek 3

Jan. 25, 2013by: Niki Stephens

Don't worry, my little sci-fi warriors-- J.J. Abrams can still take on both STAR WARS: EPISODE VII and STAR TREK 3.

Okay, so there is a bit of a catch here. I'll just let Marc Graser from Variety tell you what that is:

This is a good thing. Maybe Abrams isn't directing, but it's not a no either. We want him to stay on the STAR TREK franchise in any sort of capacity...as long as he can make some decisions and have influence, of course. It's not like we want him carrying around the coffee for the cast and crew or anything. Unless he wants to pay for it, which is completely fine.

Moving on, saying a bunch of irrelevant things...

I think that Abrams is a great choice. For the most part, I only see positive comments on the subject. I've really only seen one person be half-way negative and they were arguing to themselves about Abrams. The guy did awesome with the STAR TREK universe, and will likely do the same with STAR WARS.

Just found this on Reddit, it was too funny not to add.

If Abrams can't direct Star Trek 3, get Duncan Jones.

I wouldn't mind him passing Star Trek on to a new director for the third film, if it means he's still producing it and he's directing Star Wars VII instead. Good news all around.

I like Abrams, but I'm still not a fan of having one director handle both the Star Trek and Star Wars universes. Oh well. No need to worry until there are rumors of Brett Ratner being hired for Star Trek 3.

I was very pleased when Abrams got the job, however, i did wonder what it mean for the star trek movies. now i'm sure it won't be much of an issue.

I think it would work best to see him pass the third film onto someone else. I feel that someone like Neill Blomkamp would be able to blend the action and characters' emotions right. Abrams seems to be dealing with too much and I'd rather him put 100% into Star Wars instead of jugging Wars and Trek.

i'm against it because Abrams is too unique of a director. And it makes him one of the best directors in the business, dont get me wrong. But i just think Star Wars needs someone a little more generic that will give the new movie the same feel as the last 6. We should really be looking at whose writing the new Star Wars movie because thats where the prequels really let us down, not the director (i recognize Lucas was writer and director but you get what i mean). When you watch an Abrams movie

When you watch an Abrams movie you can obviously tell it's an Abrams movie, just like Tarantino and Wes Anderson are the same way. And as much as i love those guys, i dont want to see them attached to the new star wars movie either. Abrams is an original and when he takes a project, he makes it his. Star Wars needs someone who will take it and keep it being Star Wars. I'd favor Andrew Stanton for the job, also Duncan Jones, Joseph Kosinski, Doug Liman, or Joe Wright.

Also i dont want to see JJ Abrams spread out too thin. I'd really like to see more original stuff like "Super 8".

I'm all for it, but I see what you mean. The Star Wars films, while unique in vision aren't necessarily unique in style. There's no 'flashy' or 'clever' shots, they're presented in general fashion, generic, for lack of a better word, as you said. I'd been curious to see if Abrams dials it back and leaves the lens flare for Star Trek.

My only real concern is can he keep it fresh after making two Star Trek movies. And can he give Ep. VII a feel at once unique from his (rather Spielbergian) take on 'Star Trek' while still loyal to the many charms of Star Wars.

next guillermo del toro?

I hope this guy just doesn't pile to much on his plate. I'm indifferent on the star trek films. I could take em or leave em. Hope he can bring something new to star wars

Star Trek Star Wars crossover.

Two things make me laugh silly when I hear this. Hishe (How it should have ended) How Star Trek Should Have Ended clip when the enterprise travels through the black hole and Darth Vader is on the Death Star and blows the shit out of the Enterprise. And that little meme where It says "They're firing lasers at us and they don't even have shields" and Picard says " How quaint.... Beam a photon torpedo onto their bridge". Ahhhh it'll never happen.

I hope he can continue to direct Star Trek, but if not, just throwing this out there.....if Abrams is still a producer for ST, they could promote Alex Kurtzman into the director's chair. He has some experience, and if Abrams, Lindelof, Burk, and Orci are all still involved that means a lot of consistency with management of the franchise.

Great!

You would have thought that the creator of Felicity would one day direct a new Star Trek AND Star Wars movie???
