J.J. Abrams hangs with a very familiar face in the first behind the scenes photo from Star Wars: Episode VII

Nov. 14, 2013by: Alex Maidy

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII is still a ways away from beginning production. Hell, J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan just took over writing duties a few weeks ago. But, with any monumental film production there is a lot of work that goes into preparing for filming. In anticipation of the on screen work, Abrams and the crew at Bad Robot are likely working long hours to make sure every aspect of the new trilogy beginning with STAR WARS: EPISODE VII will be perfect.

With that in mind, we are expecting a lot of familiar faces to grace the film including Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher. But, there are a few more characters who can easily return for another trio of adventures that have not been mentioned yet: C-3PO and R2-D2. While it was likely a lock they would be coming back, this first behind the scenes pre-production photo tweet from Bad Robot:

Now, I have an R2-D2 replica in my office so this doesn't necessarily mean what we are seeing is the physical R2 unit that will be in the movie, but at the very least the hashtag of #StarWarsVII leans in that direction.

If anything, it is nice to get something official to show us that the Bad Robot team is ramping up for their largest project to date. It does feel a little weird that it is coming from somewhere other than Lucasfilm, but I am sure we will get used to it.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII opens everywhere on December 18, 2015.

Anyone else notice Abrams is wearing a very Lucas-esque rolled up long sleeve flannel?

A light rusting...

Cool, I guess. But I'd like to see some updates to the little guy, considering it's been decades since we last saw him (in the Star Wars timeline, that is). Or maybe even a little aging and degradation. Something new. Sheesh.

Are we at that point where...

R2-D2 is an actual robot and goes around in real life fixing things yet? I think the next big move would be to program R2-D2 droids to follow you like a dog, beep and boop when you talk to it like Siri and randomly dispense Lightsaber candies.

I love R2's "Under The Dome" mockumentary - funny stuff. Think it wound up as an extra on the Episode II dvd.

Cool

I love R2. I wouldn't mind an updated version though.

An Apple II!

Wouldn't R2 be like using a Commodore 64 now? As excited as I am to see a familiar droid it is overshadowed by the magic tribble standing to his right. He constantly seems to be attempting to lend credibility to his project with nostalgia, just like how he drowned Star Trek. Him and Burke get exec producer creds, Arndt is gone (lets get Kasdan! People love Kasdan! See I'm making a Star Wars movie!), and the mire that was Khan lends credence to him just whoring nostalgia for the sake of a

As the due date approaches I can almost see the tweet: familiar friends helping me round out the script, thanks Orci, Kurtz and Linds!

at this point R2 is not just a droid, but a friend and family member to Luke. Getting rid of him would be like getting rid of a family member for a newer model, just because their getting old.
