JJ Abrams officially beams up for Star Trek 2

Sep. 13, 2011by: Dave Davis

While fans of the first STAR TREK (well, the recent first one) have been hungrily waiting to consume a sequel like a fresh bowl of gakh, filmmaker JJ Abrams has been performing evasive maneuvers in regards to a return trip on the Enterprise.

Now Vulture claims that Abrams has officially committed to take the bridge once again for STAR TREK 2, and that "the script will be done by month's end and that Abrams will start shooting this winter."

This supports what we heard after Comic Con in July -- that Abrams had returned from post-SUPER 8 vacation and gathered with writers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof to work on the script.

Alas, while Abrams was deliberating, Paramount realized the sequel would never make its intended June 29th, 2012 release date, and marched G.I. JOE: RETALIATION into the slot instead. TREK 2 is now expected to boldly go into theaters either Christmas 2012 or Summer 2013.

Extra Tidbit: Okay, let the speculation continue as to what villain(s) the crew will be facing this time...

He did a great job of reintroducing almost five decades old characters in an entertaining way. He walked the tightrope between completely ticking off the ST faithful and bringing in new fans successfully. The bigger challenge, as previous directors and producers have found out, is getting an original, unique story out there and not relying upon historical character exposition to reel everyone back in.

Don't Expect Khan...

When the Wrath of Khan was made Khan had already been established previously in an episode of the Original series. Khan was a great tie in for fans and loyalists.
While fans know Kirk, fans don't know the 'new' Kirk, so expect Abrams to delve a bit further into establishing his reputation and resume before he is thrust into a situation with Khan. It's actually not likely. Abrams specifically chose Romulans as the enemy in 'Star Trek' because Klingons were had already been done. And

It's actually not likely. Abrams specifically chose Romulans as the enemy in 'Star Trek' because Klingons were had already been done. And remember, this Kirk is WAY younger than Shatner's Kirk. Shatner's Kirk had already served for like 12 years on the Farragut and under Pike until he became Captain. He was, I believe, in his thirties. This Kirk is maybe 22 to 25?
However...being that this is the second movie. It is time for Klingons or the Gorn.

Villians

How bout the Kardashian sisters. The amazon one married to Lamar Odem could be the main villain and Kim could seduce Kirk

A couple of articles have rumored one of the villains from the orignal series 1st season will be the main protagonist this time around. The candidates were Harry Mudd, or Trelane, or Gary Mitchell, or the Talosians or the Horta. But we shall see.

Only thing that sucked in the first one were the villains. So make them better this time and everything will be fine.

Wohoo!

Tidbit: how about Cardassians? And of course, Klingons are always a good choice. Especially since this was before Khitomer Accords were signed (least in Prime timeline)

I'm kind of hoping to see them go in a different direction, so hopefully they won't just rehash the Khan storyline, even though it's in a new time line. I'm excited for it though.

I was getting worried for awhile, but this is great news. Star Trek is an amazing film that deserves an awesome sequel.

Thank God

Okay let's see...the Klingons were always so sinister. Or the Borg. Q is another villain who could open up a world of possibilities for the storyline. My philosophy on this one is go big or go home.

I never understood why directors add artificial lens flare, which is something they try to avoid when shooting in sunlight in the first place...
