Joaquin Phoenix is now in final negotiations to play Doctor Strange

Aug. 28, 2014by: Alex Maidy

It seems like it was forever ago, but it was just last month that we heard the rumor that Joaquin Phoenix was in talks to star in Marvel's DOCTOR STRANGE. Since then, new rumors have cropped up, including one naming Jack Huston as a contender. But, it looks like the old rumor may be the strongest one.

Collider claims on good authority that not only is Phoenix still the top contender for the role of Strange but his negotiations are currently at the "one yard line". That means it is very close to being a done deal for the non-fans of American football.

If Phoenix is named as the lead in DOCTOR STRANGE, he would represent the biggest star yet to headline a Marvel movie. While Robert Downey Jr was redeemed by his IRON MAN role, he was not a huge star when that film was announced. All other superhero stars in Marvel's Cinematic Universe have been relative unknowns with the big names appearing as supporting characters or in villain roles. Phoenix and his Oscar-winning resume will bring another level of respect to the comic book universe that has already gained immense trust from the fan community.

DOCTOR STRANGE, directed by Scott Derrickson, will hit theaters on July 8, 2016.

I'd be down, BUT I have a concern.

He's enormously talented, so of course he'd do a great job as Doctor Strange. That said, I really hope this doesn't keep him from being in as many indie movies as he's in. I don't want him as Doctor Strange if it means sacrificing performances in other films.

I don't see him as strange...so many others that would be perfect for the role, but not him. He's great as an actor, but just not in this role.

I think Joaquin Phoenix has it in him

He wouldn't have been my first choice for Dr. Strange but he is a fine choice. Looking forward to seeing what he does with the role.

Almost seems like a career strategy for Phoenix wanting to get back into more mainstream movies, instead of living the rest of his career being a weirdo. I don't hate this choice if it'll be the final one, if he can pull off the charisma Strange carries, he'll do fine and I'm sure everyone will become to like this signing.

Love him, and he'll probably do well with the role, I guess. However, I'm not terribly excited about this casting. Not sure why. I think I'd have rather seen Jack Huston in the role, but that may just be my love of Boardwalk coming out (though he was great in Kill Your Darlings, too.)

Hmmm...I dunno....

....I had my doubts about RDJ, that's for sure. But Joaquin Phoenix bugs the crap out of me with both his nonsensical antics and his inability to act outside of the same character in every movie.

Oh, and the fact that his brother (God rest his soul) has a better resume, despite having passed from this world with years and years less experience than Joaquin.

Just make sure u can hold onto him!

My only concern is that it could be difficult to get him to stick around. They need to lock him down for a solid run in the contract straight away. If he won't sign for more than a couple of movies, I say move onto the next guy. I HATE recasting. Apart from that, could be an exciting choice. Looking forward to seeing it!

I remember when...

People were complaining when RDJ was cast as Iron Man, and look at where we're at now. Phoenix has a good bit of range, and can put on an accent quite well. I like this possible casting.

I can't think of anyone.....

.....I'd LESS like to see in the role. Phoenix plays a certain type of introverted, introspective character really well, but he has never played a role where he portrayed a character like either Dr Strange or the Sorcerer Supreme. He also looks really weird at this point in his life (kind of like Sacha Baron Cohen), and Strange is supposed to be suave, charismatic, and a complete egomaniac. I thought Cumberbatch would have been a great pick, but was sold on someone else's suggestion to make

He's a very good actor, but a really bad fit for the role.

Given that Marvel copped out a bit with regards to the sorcerer aspect of the Mandarin, how exactly do they intend to portray magic in Dr. Strange?

I think they bailed on the Mandarin because they were afraid it would insult the massive Chinese audience, who Hollywood now appeals to more than the American audience. They are putting Scarlett Witch in Avengers, and her ONLY power is magic, although they might play it off more as telekinesis.

Dr. Strange should be...strange

I think a classically handsome actor would miss the mark on this. So I think that Phoenix has the right amount of weirdness to make the role interesting, and not a carbon copy of Iron Man. I'm up for this.

Strange is supposed to be an egomaniac (and a womanizer) before his accident. His attitude comes from both his skills and his looks. I've never seen him portrayed as anything else (either in the comics or the animated works about him).

I know his star has faded but I would argue Ed Norton was as big if not bigger than Phoenix when he was casted in The Incredible Hulk. (Remember Marvel thought Iron Man was the risk movie that summer and Incredible Hulk was the safe bet.)

With that a side, this would be a rare case of my dream choice actually getting the role. (Patrick Stewart-Xavier)

That would be a coup, especially since he's always shied away from more commercial projects. He was rumoured for Lex Luthor; still think that would've turned out very well. He could be difficult for Marvel to keep under their control, though.

Well, when you're picking someone to head your multi-million dollar franchise, getting that reaction may not be the wisest idea.

Sure he could kill it and win over the fans, but if it's not a homerun (like Daredevil), people are going to really hate it and never give it another chance. They better hope he kills it.....this is the first time Marvel has had this reaction to the casting of a character (although there was skepticism of Chris Evans, he had built up good will as a great Johnny

" All other superhero stars in Marvel's Cinematic Universe have been relative unknowns"

That's not true at all. Chris Evans was fairly well known from the Fantastic Four Movies, Sunshine and to a lesser extent his other roles like Cellular, Street Kings and Push. Oh yeah, and Edward Norton was nowhere near "unknown" status when we starred in The Incredible Hulk. IMO, he's still probably the highest profile star to headline a Marvel film. Even Pratt was fairly well known to TV audiences when he landed the gig of Starlord. While Marvel certainly likes their leading men to be

Agree except for Pratt. I think a lot of ppl were like, "is that the guy from?"

But also Ruffalo had been in a lot of films, though no real action ones I can think of. I'm not sure ab Renner. If ppl didn't know who Hawkeye they were lost in Thor, and would probably only know him from his Bourne movie, or the Hurt Locker, but I'm not sure how many ppl saw that. Ppl prolly recognized his face too.

Even if its just movie news on a website, there is still something called "journalistic integrity"

People like an actor from a role (or series of roles), then assume that actor can do anything. Phoenix isn't Dr Strange in any incarnation of the character. He might do a passable job, but he'll never be that home run the character could have been with a different actor (imagine Pedro Pascal as an arrogant, Latino Dr Strange......).

Fantastic!! His goes beyond Pheonix......

Imagine of you will top-tier directors who are auteurs. Imagine auteurs who can't make a film they really want because the movies they want to make don't make a lot of money at the box office. Now Paul Thomas Anderson, Quentin Tarantino, Michael Gondry etc, would never be a gun for hire for these projects, but with Pheonix's talent and appeal to directors who can give films a unique edge over "regular" comic-book films to set them all apart. Marvel can now wrangle in top directors for a shot to blow their creative load to get their name back out there. Shane Black had his pick of the litter to direct anything he wants next after Iron Man 3. Can you imagine a truly great director with an pouty unity to finance a dream project off of name recognition for a comic book movie?!?! They would have one hell of an incentive to make a truly great film, not paint by the fucking numbers.

Paul Thomas Anderson had always been quoted how much he would want to be a "character driven action movie" now I don't know how many financiers or producers who are willing to part with a large sum of money for an art-house shoot'em up. He jumps aboard and directs a Marvel film and BOOM it rakes in money, general audiences will kinda know who was behind the movie, his name gets boosted and he has an opportunity to get money based off past success to make a movie he really wants to make. I'm not saying that this will happen, but I guarantee that something like this will happen, and who knows what type of deal Pheonix or his people will be brokering behind the scenes for "creative control" or director approval.

So for what I have explained, this will give Marvel an opportunity to take their game to the next level.

No, I see his point. With JP, Marvel could now start getting directors like Edgar Wright and stuff.

And Django and Basterds made a decent amount of $. If QT said he wanted to direct any of these type of films, after a conversation and agreement to pg-13, I think he'd get it no doubt. I wouldn't be surprised if he could get Zack Snyder and others fired if he spoke up saying he really wanted the job. Ppl would go nuts to see QT direct Kill Bill but with a franchise character.

I wouldn't be surprised if he could get Zack Snyder and others fired if he spoke up saying he really wanted the job. Ppl would go nuts to see QT direct Kill Bill but with a franchise character.

"his Oscar-winning resume"? Did I miss something? When did he win an Oscar? 3 nominations. 0 wins. Anyways, I'm stoked. One of the best actors working today. Doesn't really seem like his kind of movie, but as with most actors appearing in Marvel's movies, I'm sure he's only in it for the money.

To be honest I prefer Jack Huston. I just don't see Phoenix sticking around for multiple films.

And Marvel is just the gift that keeps on giving and giving.

He'll do a great job. He's one of the best actors working today and he'll bring much depth and experience to Doctor Stange. If he does indeed sign on, Captain America 3, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, and Doctor Strange will be my most anticipated (besides Avengers 3) in terms of Marvel films.

Every film is always his most anticipated film of the year...this guy no doubt wakes up with a smile...lives the day smiling...and when his eventual end comes...he'll probably have a creepy joker victim-esque smile too ;o)

No thanks, he's a good actor but the dudes too crazy to be in a franchise

Yep, I share your concerns that he won't stick around. I really hate it when they have to recast!
