Star Trek Beyond Celebration reveals new poster, details, and SDCC premiere!
Are you ready to boldly go where no man has gone before? If you haven’t heard about it yet, Paramount Pictures had some big news this Friday, May 20th. And we at JoBlo.com joined hundreds of Star Trek fans at Paramount Pictures to celebrate 50 years of Star Trek, and there is much to be excited for. Not only did we get a look at the new trailer for STAR TREK BEYOND - which you can check out for yourself below - but we also enjoyed a couple of extra scenes and some exciting news for those impatiently waiting the Starship Enterprise return.
It all started with STAR TREK fans gathered in one of the sound stages which had been used for the original series. The stage was designed to look like the iconic ship, and it was absolutely mesmerizing walking in. Soon, hundreds of fans gathered together where we were all treated to an entertaining question and answer session with both J.J. Abrams and BEYOND director Justin Lin. Karl Urban, Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine also took the time to answer fan questions, and more importantly, share stories about the legendary Leonard Nimoy.
The biggest news of the evening came with the announcement that STAR TREK BEYOND would be premiering at San Diego Comic-Con. For the first time ever, the film will be presented at an outdoor IMAX premiere event. Not only will those in attendance be able to see the new film in a unique way, they will also be treated to appearances from the cast and crew, and a live concert performance by the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. The premiere screening will be held on Wednesday, July 20th, and it looks like it will be one hell of an incredible event for those in attendance.
Next up, the masses headed out for the unveiling of a brand new street on the Paramount lot named after one of the greats. "Leonard Nimoy Way" will forever be a part of the studio and its history, and it was an honor to see it all take place. Having had the incredible opportunity to interview the icon years back with the release of Abrams’ first STAR TREK, it brought a tear to my eye to see this incredible man remembered so fondly. While everyone was thrilled to see the preview and the footage, it was definitely a highlight to hear Quinto talk about getting to know Nimoy and how integral the actor was to this long-lasting franchise.
Finally, we were gathered in yet another soundstage to get a look at the trailer and a couple of additional scenes from the new film. As far as the trailer is concerned, I am more than happy to see Lin involved and I’m even more revved up to see what Simon Pegg - along with his co-writers Doug Jung, Robert Orci, John D. Payne and Patrick McKay - will bring to the series. Let us know in the comments below your thoughts on the new trailer.
After that, we were shown two short scenes. One involving Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk as he walks through the corridors of the Enterprise. While it was simply a voiceover dialogue driven moment, I did get the sense that some of Pegg’s humor may come through rather nicely in the script. Next up we saw a similar dialogue heavy scene - part of which you can catch in the trailer - where Bones (Karl Urban) and Kirk share a drink. While neither of the scenes had much action, it was nice to see the characters together again. And one joke regarding stealing Chekov’s (Anton Yelchin) booze certainly brought a smile to my face, and a huge reaction from the audience.
And while it may sound like we just witnessed a bunch of talking between characters, the action finally hit with a fantastic looking sequence during an massive attack on the ship. This is a brutal assault on the Enterprise, one that leads the entire crew to seek an escape from the destruction. You can also see some of this in the trailer, as a mass of alien ships smash down on Kirk and his crew doing serious damage. While they didn’t reveal too much, I can honestly say that there was a level of excitement in the room that is hard to resist. Personally, I’m one hundred percent sold on catching the new film, which opens wide this summer on July 22nd.
After an amazing night of celebrating STAR TREK, I wanted to personally thank Paramount for inviting us to join in to honor 50 years of Kirk, Spock, Bones, Uhura, Scotty and Chekov. As well, thanks to Justin Lin, J.J. Abrams, Karl Urban, Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine for sharing this exciting night with the fans.
