Jodie Whittaker named as the 13th Doctor

07.16.2017

In a day that will be remembered by every DOCTOR WHO fan around the world, the 13th Doctor has finally been chosen, and she looks like an awesome choice. That’s right, the first ever female Doctor is finally upon us and will be played by Jodie Whittaker.

The ATTACK THE BLOCK actress was announced as the new time lord via a video that aired during the Wimbledon finals today, and you can check out said video below!

Whittaker expressed her joy in a statement, saying that above all else the Doctor represents hope:

I’m beyond excited to begin this epic journey, with Chris and with every Whovian on this planet. It’s more than an honor to play the Doctor. It means remembering everyone I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope. I can’t wait.

The most recent Doctor, Peter Capaldi, also spoke highly of Whittaker:

Anyone who has seen Jodie Whittaker’s work will know that she is a wonderful actress of great individuality and charm. She has above all the huge heart to play this most special part. She’s going to be a fantastic Doctor.

Of all the fandoms that dominate our society, DOCTOR WHO is the one I am the least familiar with. It has such a passionate fan base behind it, and such a rich background that I feel jumping on at this point would require too much energy and I would only end up looking foolish. But that still doesn’t mean I and the rest of the JoBlo team can’t wish Whittaker the best of luck in the role!

SO ...

... they couldn't cast African-American woman who happens to be gay as Doctor? That sucks.

Now boys will really dream about travelling with the Doctor. Seriously though, I've been a fan since the 70's when it first started airing on TV Ontario up here. Pretty sure we got the Pertwee episodes first before the Tom Baker ones on PBS out of Buffalo (could never convince my parents to call in a pledge so I could get that wicked tote bag/coffee mug combo!), so he was my favourite Doctor. The new iteration has been really good, and I don't care if the Doctor is female, black, asian, indian

"Hello tv viewers. I'm the Doctor. I'm a Timelord, from the planet Gallifrey in the Constellation of Kasterborous. I'm 903 years old. I can travel to any planet in the universe and at any point in the planets history, in a dimensional transcendent spaceship, stuck in the shape of a police telephone box from the 1960s. Oh, and I'm the person who's gonna save the Iives of all six billion people on the planet below. You got a problem with that"

"Nope. Sounds good"

"WHAAAT??? YOU CAN'T DO THAT. IT'S RIDICULOUS. I THINK I'M GOING TO BE SICK. I'LL NEVER WATCH YOUR SHOW AGAIN!!!!"

Whitaker is a good actress, but Dr. Who's American. viewership has dropped by almost 60% in the past three years (to the point where it's now the lowest it's been since the series was revived), while a lot of people liked Capaldi, a lot of the younger fanbase that got hooked on Tennant and Smith stopped watching after he took over. Hopefully Whittaker can get the viewership back up

Also, if you want to familiarize yourself with Whittaker's work check her out in Broadchurch or the Black Mirror episode "The Entire History of You." She's good in Attack The Block, but even better in those two.

A surprising new but I'm okay with that. However, will there be a new Assistant?

I wish it were Tilda

But it's still cool that they are shaking things up. Moffat is finally gone and Capaldi only seemed to care in this last season. Good riddance. Here's to a new Doctor, new showrunner and new adventures.

No more Time Lord

So what is it now, Time Lady? This change has been rumoured in the U.K ever since Peter Capaldi announced his departure from the show and I think the huge majority of fans were hoping this was just to throw people off the scent of who would really be taking over the Tardis! This decision will fundamentally change a show that has successfully been running for over fifty years! It may well mean the end of the show for many viewers, and from the reactions I have read online so far this really is

This decision will fundamentally change a show that has successfully been running for over fifty years! It may well mean the end of the show for many viewers, and from the reactions I have read online so far this really is the case. I sincerely hope the writing is of the highest quality as it really needs to be to keep as many viewers as possible or this will be the end of one of the worlds longest running TV shows. Episode 1 will get huge viewing figures due to the curiosity factor so it needs to be amazing and not just an hour of bad jokes about having breasts for the first time. In recent years the show has done a fantastic job of turning the doctors companions from the traditional damsels in distress into extremely strong, independent characters that are often more central to the plot than the doctor himself. I just don't know how it is going to work with what I assume will be a male companion. What is the male version of a damsel anyway?

I've been a fan for only 7 years (both new and class) and I'm very cool with the fact we've got our first female Doctor thought very surprised that people are saying they're not watching the show anymore...guess they're not true fans

Oh, they'll watch it if only to find things to bitch about. If it turns out to be good, they'll be saying "I was behind this 100% from the beginning"

I havent even seen last season, the writing has gotten so convoluted where every episode was a life changing experience for the doctor it stopped becoming entertaining. i may try to catch up to check out the new Doctor. I liked Tennant, Smith, and Capaldi, and im excited for Whittaker, i just hope the writing is simpler and more more emotionally based and not end of the world stuff

Take the Plunge

After years of feeling overwhelmed with even trying to start on this series it was my 6 year old nephew who got me started on Doctor Who. I am watching the original 1964 series and started on the 2005 reboot at the same time.I have to admit I can see why the show is so popular, its excellent sci-fi. Do not be scared to jump on board the TARDIS, its worth it!
