Marvel confirms Joe & Anthony Russo are set to direct Avengers: Infinity War

04.07.2015

We've heard the rumblings and read the speculation, but now we can officially put all that to bed. Marvel has just announced that the directors of the two-part AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR film event will be none other than WINTER SOLDIER and CIVIL WAR directors Joe & Anthony Russo. These two creative minds wowed audiences and critics alike with CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, which arguably became one of the greatest comic book films of all time. With CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR well underway, and word that Joss Whedon would not be behind the camera for a third Avengers outing, it looks like these fan favorites have stepped up to the plate and signed on to direct BOTH installments of INFINITY WAR, of which fans have been clamoring for since the first infinity stone was introduced.

The third film in the Captain America franchise will, of course, bring the classic storyline from the Civil War comics to life, pitting Captain America (Chris Evans) against Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.). The film will also introduce Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther. In regards to AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, this is not the most surprising bit of news, but it's certainly a welcome one. The Russo's showed some major prowess in directing an exciting action picture with some real drama at heart and stakes raised over that of its brethren, which is probably one of the hardest things to pull off in a comic book film. Especially after the madness that was the first AVENGERS film. Even though AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON is almost 3 weeks away, it's hard not to get excited for the Marvel films to come.

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR - PART I will hit on May 4, 2018, while AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR - PART II will street May 2, 2019.

I have no qualms admitting that I lost my shit the first time I saw this in theaters.

Captain America Winter Soldier was such a juicy film, with a great plot and feel. The Russo's made that film work for Marvel. Getting them on Avengers Infinity War sounds like a shrewd move.

Yay! The Avengers movies are now in good hands. I trust in the Russo Brothers.

Solid news for the Avengers... I'm sure Whedon will stay on as a producer or co-writer I'm sure.

Why the bandwagoning for these guys?

Nothing they e directed has been worthy of this gig. Take a look at their resume. It's bland. CA:TWS was boring and not visually appealing which is the opposite of what the Avengers is and should be. Talk about q disappointment. Seriously go back and watch some of the stuff they've directed and tell me they're qualified. They can't handle the epic fantasy that the Infinity Gauntlet requires. They'll make it way too "grounded in reality" to the point where it will just be dull and lifeless. Bad

Hey Zack Synder I heard Superman hasn't been brooding enough today. Better get on that.

Please tell me you are joking? The attack scene on Nick Fury was amazing, so was the ending fight scene between Cap & TWS was awesome. What movie did you freaking watch?

I agree. While it was busy with action - it lacked any sort of craftsmanship. I actually feel this way about most Marvel films and noticed this trend of cinematic blandness with potent amounts of action in this weekend's Furious 7.

While I really liked Winter Soldier, I'll agree it had its flaws, especially about the visual disappointment (aside from the action scenes. They were great, but it wasn't anything special other than that.) im also not totally on board for this yet because the Russo's haven't really been tested. Yeah, they made one good movie, along with some good tv episodes and the underwhelming You Me and Dupree. They nailed one film, but I don't think that means they're ready to take on arguably the biggest

I would have at least waited to see what they do with civil war to lock them in. I'm hopeful, but not sold yet.

I guess I thought The Winter Soldier was universally loved. Eh, to each their own.

But I will ask this; What was Joss Whedon's filmography when he was given the Avengers? Some TV of varying quality and one movie based on one of his shows. That's it.

If the Russo's can make the jump in quality from the abysmal Dupree to the at least serviceable TWS, it shows they are learning, and by the time the cameras are rolling on Infinity Wars they'll be even better.

Bit of a no-brainer

Given how they hit WINTER SOLDIER out of the park, I'm not surprised they went with the Russos for INFINITY WAR if Whedon was unavailable. Looking forward to what they conjure up onscreen.

We all love Whedon, but anyone who's been paying attention to interviews and featurettes for AOU can tell the movie totally exhausted the guy. And understandably so. I'm glad it's these guys who will be filling in his shoes.

This is good news. I wouldn't say it's amazing or awesome at this point. The speculation has been going around on this for months, so a confirmation now makes this rather underwhelming. The Russo Brothers have done great work so far with the Captain America franchise. Hopefully they can parlay their success from Winter Soldier into Civil War next year.

Good. Their work on Winter Soldier was terrific. However, the only thing that is classic about the Civil War series of comics is that it is classically overrated. I for one did not care for it, but I will no doubt see the eventual film and hopefully there are some changes made.

Awesome news. I have to agree with everyone else that I hope Joss Whedon stays on as producer and/or story writer. But after doing a great job of balancing all of the characters and theirs arcs in Winter Soldier, I'm excited to see how they do that all again with even more characters and a much larger storyline.

But... Who's writing the Infinity War? I'm still hoping Joss Whedon .

A Whedon/Russo combo sounds perfect for Marvel

I'm guessing that anyone calling the Civil War comic "classic" never actually read the whole thing.
