Joel Kinnaman to make a killing as your new Robocop

Mar. 5, 2012by:

Joel Kinnaman in black and whiteWell that was fast-ish. Less than two weeks ago we reported that Joel Kinnaman ("The Killing," SNABBA CASH) had been offered the lead in the ROBOCOP reboot/remake/re-whatever it is, and now it is being said in  a Deadline Exclusive that he has accepted the (robotic) part(s).

Kinnaman, originally set to make his debut in a big studio movie by playing Lancelot in Dave Dobkin's ARTHUR AND LANCELOT, is probably still unknown enough that he came on the cheap.  Which is great for all involved, as it means Kinnaman gets his shot to star in what director Jose Padilha hopes will be an action-character piece and the studio gets one more way to keep costs low (a problem which effectively killed ARTHUR AND LANCELOT).

Having never seen "The Killing" (there are too many great shows to catch up on - "Mad Men" and "Game of Thrones" are where I am right now) I have no idea as to Kinnaman's acting abilities.  Any insight out there in cyberspace?

The Killing is a great show and he is a big part of it.

And that finale was not that bad.

Nice shootin' son. What's yer name?

Don't know the actor well enough to give an honest opinion of him as the next Murphy. I loved the original Robocop though and have watched it many times. That being said, I do not get offended at all by talk of a reboot/remake. There is nothing this film can do to tarnish the legacy of the first film that Robocop 2 and (especially) 3 haven't done already! If done right, more Robocop is definitely a good thing.

On the Fence

The first Robocop was great.. but the following films weren't my favourite... but before I'm sold on a Robo reboot.. id have to see some concept art work on what Robocop would look like. I do not want to see him look like some transformer / terminator

Another reboot?

Peter Weller is the only guy who can do Robocop. Hell his voice alone is Robocop. Not doubting Joel's acting abilities, but there's only one guy to fit the job. Like how Arnold Schwarzenegger is to the Terminator or Kurt Russell is to Snake Pissken.

I totally agree. Don't people remember the total crapfest that was the recasting of Hannibal Lecter by Anthony Hopkins. Or what about the horrible Heath Ledger as the Joker. And why isn't Sean Connery still playing James Bond? How come there are still Dracula movies being made even though Bela Lugosi died 100 years ago? Hollywood sucks.

Nice smart-ass rant there, Herald. Notice how you mention all characters from literature and Deeves' were all created for the big screen? Of course you didn't . . .

Haha I didn't :D

Still Pinhead's origin is from literature and we all know how much 'moviefans' love to see a different actor portray him.
Replace Matt Damon as Bourne like he replaced Richard Chamberlain and boy you know how to disrespect 'moviefans'.

Rambo was originally a book character, but 'moviefans' probably would't like to see someone else play the character.
And what about John McClane. Die hard is based on a book that is a sequel to a book that already was filmed with Frank

As for RoboCop, they are probably going to change the new RoboCop design anyway so it doesn't look like something from the 80's so why would you want to keep Peter Weller? It's a different RoboCop so it should be a different actor.

The Killing had one of the worst season finales I have ever experienced. But he is really good on the show and his involvement peaks my interest for a Reboot Cop more than anyone should be able to.

I loved him in 'The Killing', but I'm still unhappy that they're remaking 'Robocop' at all...

Except for the fact that his character on The Killing speaks like he was raised on rap videoes, he was one of the better parts of the show.
