John Cusack & Adrien Brody join Jackie Chan's historical epic Dragon Blade

06.16.2014

Here's some odd casting news for you this morning: Variety is reporting John Cusack and Adrien Brody will star alongside Jackie Chan in the upcoming period action movie DRAGON BLADE. Daniel Lee (14 BLADES, BLACK MASK) will be behind the camera for DRAGON BLADE, and with a budget of $65 million will be one of the most expensive Chinese films of all time.

John Cusack has been cast as Lucius, a Roman general leading his troops into China, and Adrien Brody will play the villainous Tiberius, who after killing Roman Consul Crassus, is now chasing Lucius with his own army of 100,000 soldiers. Jackie Chan will play Huo An, a commander of the protectorate of the western regions who teams up with Lucius to protect China's border.

DRAGON BLADE sounds like it's going to be a pretty epic movie, and I definitely am interested in checking it out. I think it's going to be a little strange seeing John Cusack in a historical action movie like DRAGON BLADE, but I'm sure he'll do just fine as Lucius.

Filming has already begun on DRAGON BLADE, and while it doesn't have a domestic release date yet, it will open in China on February 19, 2015.

Odd casting choice, but I can't really see this coming out so well. Brody and Cusack aren't really action stars, despite their various attempts, and Chan has slowed down. This seems like another mediocre period piece, though I do think that the Roman angle is interesting.

Being more attuned to Asian cinema, this has expensive train-wreck written all over it. Daniel Lee is a C-grade director in Hong Kong, and certainly doesn't know how to handle a period epic.John Cusack and Adrien Brody are woeful miscasts. Even Jackie Chan has been slumming it lately with the cheesy CZ12 and the boring Police Story 2013. It's probably going to make a ridiculous amount of money in China, thanks to Jackie Chan and the international star power, but I'm not sure about everywhere

I actually really liked the new Police Story. It was very different and he was excellent in it. And considering his age and how he has slowed down in the past years, it was a good balance of hard hitting action and good drama. Jackie doesn't get enough credit for his acting ability. But I do agree about a lot of the other stuff.

What makes you an hong Kong movie expert to the point of knowing whether Daniel Lee can't handle a period. You exactly what this man from the other side of the world can handle.

I don't know why does John Cusac even get films to star in. He is a bad actor and does have a weird face monotonous face. He doesn't fit in any of the genres.

First thing that came to mind was 13th Warrior (I know a lot of schmoes do love that movie though). To be honest, I'm not really a fan of Mainland Chinese "epic" films, particularly the recent ones designed to compete with Hollywood blockbusters as they can often turn out quite awkward or be visually hokey.

I don't think it has to make a dime in the U.S. to break even considering the size of the Chinese box office.
(Journey to the West made almost $200 million in China alone).

It may not even get a theatrical release here.

I'm getting a 'Pompeii' vibe from that synopsis.
