John Leguizamo would absolutely love to play the Joker in a future Batman film

Aug. 5, 2013by: Jesse Giroux

Leguizamo/Joker

When the next STAR WARS films were announced it seemed like every actor/writer/director was asked if they were interested in being a part of the new films, and now the same thing is happening with Warner Bros. and DC's BATMAN/SUPERMAN film. There has been plenty of rumors and speculations already about who will wear the cowl, but not much about the other Batman characters who might appear in the movie.

Desde Hollywood talked to John Leguizamo recently and told the actor that they would love to see a Latino Joker in a future Batman film. Not that Leguizamo would be the first: Caser Romero famously played the villain on the television series in the 1960's. But would John Leguizamo be interested in playing the Joker?

Just because I have to represent for my Latin people. It’s crazy. I went to Comic-Con and 50% of the nerds were Latin, Black and Asian. I said “Come on! We are so underrepresented and we support the whole industry”.

Leguizamo goes on to say that even though he's not a fan of all the comic book movies (and other current popular film genres), he would totally be down with playing the Joker:

I am not against comic-book movies. I just feel that I have seen enough zombies, vampires and apocalyptic comic-book super heroes in my lifetime. I want to see real people on screen for a while. But hell yeah, I would do Batman. The Joker would be a blast!

John Leguizamo would make a pretty terrifying Joker in my opinion. I don't think his performance would have the same impact as Heath Ledger's in THE DARK KNIGHT but he can certainly play unhinged and crazy very well, and we already know he looks pretty good in make-up because of SPAWN. Obviously this is an actor expressing his desire to play a character and not a rumor that Warner Bros. is interested in Leguizamo, but if I was the studio I'd keep him in mind when casting starts if the Joker does have a part in the new film.

Extra Tidbit: How would you feel about John Leguizamo as the Joker?

I know I'll be getting the thumbs down but....

I could see Tim Roth doing a phenomenal job as the Joker.

No Joker for Awhile.

I'd love to see Black Mask, Victor Zsasz, or Mad Hatter....It's such a fuckin bummer we won't see Aaron Eckhart play Two-Face again, his performance was amazing.

Right on. I'd love to see Mad Hatter done well. That would be a trippy movie.

I think he'd make an interesting Joker but honestly I hope they give the character a rest for a while and cover some other villains in Batman's Rogue Gallery.

Glover has no charisma. Thats like saying cast Jon Hamm as James Bond because he looks good in suit or tux.
It more than that.

"Just because I have to represent my Latin people???" Playing a psychotic villain will do that? He doesn't like comic book movies and it's not like he's anything special as an actor so I say don't do us any favors!

How do I feel about Leguizamo playing the Joker?

THUMBS DOWN TIMES 10 FREAKING MILLION.

They're eventually going to put the Joker in another Batman movie, I realize that. Its just a matter of time. I'm okay with that. All that I ask is that, when they do, they give the role to another actor of Ledger's caliber.

A Little Sidenote...

..how about Mickey Rourke for Killer Croc? Rourke playing a sewer-dwelling cannibal would be scary as hell. Or Sean Penn or Sam Rockwell for The Joker? Those guys can act. Or hell, pay Daniel Day Lewis and tell him he needs to play The Joker and he'd go method all over that role. So many better choices out there waiting for a chance to play this role. Terry O' Quinn for Mr.Freeze, maybe.

I want to see villains that have not been done before or recently..

..I want to see The Penguin,Ivy, Szas,Deadshot, Slade in a Batman movie..there are soo many villains..but they always do only 2 or 3. Maybe leave the Joker alone for a couple of more years.Too many joker movies out there..I would love to see Slade ...because he truly goes toe toe with Bats.
And in Superman/Batman film I want to see Luther because he's very intelligent and can take both Superman and Batman at the same time! So LUther should be in Superman/Batman

Well, first of all, as someone else wrote, it's supposed to be a sequel to MoS, so Joker has nothing to do in this.
Then, about Leguizamo, I don't know how he would do, but let me refresh your memories from a few years back...
'What ? Ledger for the Joker ? Noooo ! Not after Nicholson...!!'

Yeah, I remember having to defend Ledger to all my friends. They made the lame "Brokebat Mountain" jokes and stuff like that. Then the movie came out and they all acted like they supported him from the beginning. Ah, revisionist history...

Who cares about race?

I'm seriously tired of this issue. It's like the only people that are clearly racist are the ones who say things like, "represent my latin people". OMG, who effing cares. What happened to people being people and representing themselves? I don't say I'm a Scottish-American. Jeezuz. Look, I like Leguizamo, but in no way is he good for this role whether he's green, purple, yellow, white, or brown.

If you were denied opportunities based on your ethnicity - you might feel differently about it. It's no small coincidence that the people who whine about being tired of hearing about racism are predominately white - the cultural group that has maintain financial, military and social dominance for the past several centuries. As a fellow Scottish-American, I'd recommend you get off your soap-box and appreciate what you have. Nobody is exercizing institutional racism against you.

Whether or not

Whether or not he's good for the role personally is a different question from either the questioning of minorities being represented fairly in mainstream film (they're not) or whether he has the right to want to play the part (he does).

Another? There's only been 2... 3 if you count the campy 60's version where all of the villains made an appearance. I agree with yer lex Luther argument. But I for one would like to see another joker again in the near future. As well as penguin and riddler.

There is only one person i want to see as joker...

Willem Dafoe has the smile, the psycho eyes and the acting chops to pull off a joker we can all be in awe of.
As far as other villains i'd like to see someone do croc... and i think with the right effects studio, Nathan Jones would be perfect.
Black Mask for me would have to be Woody Harrelson.
I'd like to see Eddie Marsan do the Penguin since as a fellow Brit i like the english depiction of old Ozzie Cobblepot.
Zsaas is a no brainer for me and would simply be Michael Rooker.

I wonder if the next iteration of the Joker will fall more along the lines of the Animated Series' version. IE: a bit more 'comical.' It just seems like a 'serious' future Joker will only ever be compared to Ledger's interpretation. Maybe it will mirror the Arkham games' fusion. Something will HAVE to be different though.

I love Leguizamo. I think he's a bit underrated as an actor. I can see him playing The Joker, but that seem more like a safe choice for him. I'd rather see him as The Riddler, or heck put on the fat suit again and be The Penguin. I'd love to see him tackle that role.

Not the best choice

I like JL but I don't think he would be the best choice. I understand that we can't ignore the Joket in a new series of Batman films and I wouldn't expect them too. But I would like to see something that we haven't seen in the Joker before and I feel like he would play the role too much like Ledger and it wouldn't be a fair view of the character. Personally I want to see a psychotic, genius who is a bit more of a physical threat. Not saying that he has to be able to go toe to toe with Batman.

Seen a lot of posters wanting Lex in the Bats/Supes flick. I think Lex should only be introduced in a Superman solo flick. I could picture Brainiac being featured though.

Also wouldn't mind JGL making an appearance as NightWing. Maybe he's handling Gotham just fine but gets hurt really bad & that's part of what brings Wayne back into action . . .

Keep Dreaming, Leguizamo.

John could be a Mexican, Asian, African-American albino man with a Native American mother and Puerto Rican father and I'd still f*cking hate it if he played The Joker. Like BatSTUD said below, it isn't about race, it's about how you play the role and frankly, just saying backwards-assed things like "represent my Latin people" tells me you're approaching this wrong from the get-go. It's about representing the character and nothing else.

I could see Leguizamo working if The Joker had a small role in an upcoming Batman movie (or the Superman VS. Batman movie). Truth be told, I highly doubt that the WB is gonna drag out the Joker anytime soon and have him play a significant part in a new Bats movie. Ledger's portrayal is not only truly iconic but it happened 5yrs ago. Between Nicholson's legendary take on it and Ledger's there was a 19 yr waiting period so revisiting the Joker felt natural. But even if WB waited til 2018 to bring

So if they do put the Joker in a new film it should only be a small, supporting role (like Ledger's was supposed to be in TDKR). And Leguizamo could play him.

Some People mentioned it below

No Joker for sometime.. there are other characters we can bring to the screen, yes none as iconic.. but with a character so iconic it must be done to absolute perfection anything less would be disgraceful.

Im open to a new Batman

because I think Nolan has built up enough stock and goodwill in the character and laid out pretty well what he is and what he believes in. So to that end I say do an Arkhum Asylum movie or something like that, keep the character as grounded as he has been with Bale and Keaton and tell different tales, you just cant let some one do a Schumacer and let this spiral out of control and end not being anything about Batman but more about the bad guys or side kicks. Batman is like Star Wars in that

Batman is like Star Wars in that you have a huge universe of stories to choose from, it doesn't have to be just one version that is acceptable. With that said this dude can act and he could play that character very well I think!!

I'm a fan, but I'm unconvinced...

I think it's too soon for a new Batman, but even more so, I think it's too soon to bring in a new Joker. I really like Leguizamo. I think he's very underrated, and has had a rough go of a career. I think he'd do a decent job playing the Joker, and would even bring something entirely different to the part, but I'm not sure I'd care to see that anytime soon. No matter how well he played the part, I think everyone would still be left pining for what Heath Ledger had given us, and it's not

If the WB's smart, they'll leave the Joker in Arkham for a very, very long time. I'm not saying they should never use him again, but just allow enough time to pass that people are willing to give someone else a chance... And who ever they are, make sure they bring something new to the table. Jack was great, because he wasn't just giving his best Romero impression, and Ledger wasn't doing a Jack impression... They played the part in a way we'd never seen done before, and that's what made them so great... Make sure the next actor does the same.

Ehhh... The character is never going to be retired for good, but I'm thinking the hiatus should be a LONG one. And I don't see Leguizamo close to being the best casting choice.

I'd love to see an older thesp get a crack at it in a full on Dark Knight Returns adaptation. Can you imagine Daniel Day Lewis taking a crack at it?

I have three comments on this:

1. John Leguizamo is not right for The Joker. Maybe he would have been BEFORE Ledger's performance but now the next time The Joker hits the big screen it will have to be exceptional.

2. I don't think they should touch any of the villains that were includied in the Dark Knight trilogy. But ultimately...

3. I don't want to see any of Batman's villains in this film. Leave them for the next solo Batflick. For me it's a sequel to Man of Steel, if there are any villains it should be Lex

Sorry John, but you've already played a joker.

John Leguizamo is a hell of an actor, and has gone far since his small small role as one of Col. Stuart's men in "Die Hard 2". He would no doubt be more than capable to play the role, but he's already played a devilsh and evil chaotic clown in "Spawn". Those who remember that film and that role, know he's already played a different kind of joker. It would be like casting Tim Curry as the Joker, decades after playing "It". The brilliance of casting Heath Ledger as the Joker, and this should

John Leguizamo is good at this too, but he's already played Satan's joker.

I could see Leguizamo playing the Joker.

The Joker is too great a villain for them to retire forever. So as great as Ledger was, obviously sooner or later there will be another actor in the role.

Hurm....

He wouldn't be bad, but I watched Rampart last night and DEF think Woody Harrellson should do it.

when I first saw the article for some reason I thought it was talking about him playing the Riddler. I do believe he would be a fantastic Riddler, I'm not too sure about the Joker. I suppose it's all because Heath did such an AMAZING job, that trying to get anyone else to do it is going to be REALLY hard. I suppose it just feels too soon to have Joker in a movie. I say give it a couple more years before we introduce Joker again, but John can play a character that is unhinged rather well so who

Just go with it...

An actor that is less famous would be better. Go with Jere Burns. This guy looks like the Joker without makeup. Check it out. [link]

I think his version would be interesting

He played the hell out of the Violater in "Spawn".

Nope.

I like Leguizamo, but please; does anybody think that in the wake of Ledgers iconic performance, this guy would any less than a disappointment? Maybe I'm being close minded here, but I can't think of too many worse choices for the role.
Eddie Murphy maybe. He'd be worse.

Coming from the man who starred in Land of the Dead

Having said that, he'd make an interesting Joker.

Of course he would want to play the joker. It would be a paying gig for an actor who has virtually vanished from the big screen. Let's not forget Spawn. A movie about a great comic book hero that is nearly un-watchable. I actually don't hate the idea of JL playing the joker, but I think they should explore other villains first. Reestablish Batman make sure it's great and then think about the Joker. Keep in mind in the Dark Knight Returns, he dies. So it all depends on how true Snyder is

I always thought Paul Bettany would make for a great Joker. And possibly Sam Rockwell for Joker or The Riddler.

Simply to respect Ledger they need to hold off on having a live action Joker for another few years. Wait at least a decade after TDK's release, maybe even 15 years. Joker is represented frequently enough in comics, animation, and video games. We don't need to see him on the big screen for awhile.

As much as I loved his performance in TDK, I would totally be fine with a new Joker. He's been dead for 5 years, if his baby momma has moved on then so do we.

The mass public will unfairly heap so much hatred on an actor (and the movie) if they do the Joker in 2015. Just wait until the new Batman is established - 2018 (or whenever they do the Superman/Batman follow-up) isn't that far away, but will give them some breathing room. The new Batman should have a Joker to fight, and he likely will. But I think he should go up against someone he haven't seen in a movie before first. Like Black Mask or Deadshot. Or even a new interpretation of Riddler or

The younger crowd probably would. But people cried at first when Heath was chosen for the part. Boo hoo nobody can play the joker but jack Nicholson! Jack was also nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of joker! Some people are so fucking close minded it makes me sick! I would love to see all those villains too, but nothing says joker can't be Involved in some way.

Jason3223.... Jack was not nominated for an Oscar for playing The Joker. I do agree with you though that they should use Joker again and soon.

HELL YEAH!!

John would totally own the role and would silence the nay sayers. Sure his performance wouldnt be Oscar worthy like Heath but I totally see him putting his own spin and not ape Ledger's act.
