Jon M. Chu will return to direct G.I. Joe 3

Jun. 12, 2013by: Alex Maidy

Despite less than glowing reviews and lower domestic box office than THE RISE OF COBRA, G.I. JOE: RETALIATION is looked at as a success due to better worldwide grosses than the first film. We knew a third movie was coming, but now we know for certain that the next movie will retain the same director in Jon M. Chu.

Deadline reports that Chu will return to helm the currently untitled third G.I. JOE movie thanks to his success with RETALIATION. We all watched as G.I. JOE: RETALIATION was pulled from theaters a week before release in 2012 for what we soon learned was a 3D conversion to boost international box office. Despite a delay of nine months to this past March, RETALIATION still did better than projected.

With the stigma of rebooting an awful film off of his shoulders, Chu can play in the world he created and introduce new characters. Screenwriters Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese have already teased a return for The Baroness, so who knows who we may see in the third installment. It is assumed we will see Roadblock come back as Dwayne Johnson has voiced his willingness to return, but with his schedule filling up that may prove difficult.

Anyone excited for G.I. JOE 3?

It wouldn't be a proper trilogy

if the third one turned out to be good.

First one took a lot of heat, but i thought it was an enjoyable flick if you just took it for what it was, a mindless action flick. I thought they would improve with the second movie, but they actually went backwards. Killing off Magic Mike so early was a good move, and giving us much more Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow should've been enough, but it wasn't. i was bored watching it and told everyone to wait for dvd to rent if they had to see it.

Improving the third movie in the franchise

Improving the third movie in the franchise shouldn't be too difficult lol.

Here's a tip, Sergeant Slaughter. You're welcome :)

Yes please. I think he did a decent job of proving his mettle. For "the guy who made the Justin Bieber movie", Retaliation could've been a massive train wreck, but it wasn't. It was silly, but it wasn't as silly as Rise of Cobra, and it was entertaining. Would be nice to see him return.

The first movie wasn't great, but it was still better than the second. Honestly other than the Rock and Snake Eyes, did anyone care about the other Joes? The second one was just dumb. The entire city of London is destroyed, but somehow that's forgotten 5 minutes later and the Joes all get a medal. Like Ghost Rider, you got different directors on two different films and both were disappointing. Time for a full reboot if anything.

Rise was disgusting. Retaliation was much better. Wanna see where this dude takes it from here.

As long as Snake-eyes is in...

I'm all in...I'd like to see the return of Destro or introduce Mafor Bluff, Tomax/Zamot and Stalker...

re-watched the first movie and i liked it more. its so dumb but a LOT more fun.

I was a GI Joe comic collector back in the day - was happy to hear that movies were going to be made. Then they came... weren't very good... now I'm not bothered. I agree with others, the second isn't very good ...and the first... which isn't great either ...is probably better... just ...may be ...don't know. They both certainly left me very disappointed. That all said, I'm glad the Storm Shadow relationship dynamic with Snake Eyes was corrected in the second movie and whilst I'm still

That all said, I'm glad the Storm Shadow relationship dynamic with Snake Eyes was corrected in the second movie and whilst I'm still bothered with the vow of silence nonsense and how that was tottally not mentioned in the follow up (shouldn't he be talking now... given that he thinks Storm Shadow was killed in the first movie) and the fact that if you actually think about it ...they never had a friendship in the beginning ...since Storm Shadow took an instant dislike to Snake Eyes when they were kids - not like they were friends ...and one slowly got jealous as the other performed better and gained more appreciation from the master.... you know ...on second thoughts, yesthey just weren't very good and like live action superhero comic book movies, the animated efforts always do things better - G.I. Joe: Resolute rules! [link]

Eh

This first one wasn't a good film by no means, but I enjoyed the over the top action, the second film sucked, it was suck a generic action film, I thought it was worse than the first. It's like what the first film got right the second film fucked up.

I love GI Joes but these movies have sucked really really bad! Can we get people who won't completely fuck up the series.

"Despite less than glowing reviews and lower domestic box office than THE RISE OF COBRA, G.I. JOE: RETALIATION is looked at as a success due to better worldwide grosses than the first film". And because everybody needs to consider The Rock as a successful Hollywood star... even with a lot of box office flops in his own movies.

Agreed! The Rock can't carry a movie of his own.
