John Turturro wants to direct The Big Lebowski spinoff about Jesus next year

Jun. 25, 2014by: Jesse Giroux

Dios mio, man! I know John Turturro has said he'd love to play Jesus Quintana from THE BIG LEBOWSKI again in another movie, but I guess I didn't realize just how interested he is in reprising the character, and how close we might be from it actually happening.

Last year when asked about a possible spinoff featuring The Jesus, Ethan Coen said, "John Turturro, who wants it, talks to us incessantly about doing a sequel about his (bowler) character Jesus. He even has the story worked out, which he’s pitched to us a few times, but I can’t really remember it... No, I don’t see it in our future." However, while at the Taormina Film Festival, Turturro told the audience he wants to direct the spinoff next year, if he gets permission from the Coen Brothers.

If I can get the permission I need, I'd like to return to that role.

While I'm not sure if Jesus is capable of carrying a movie on his own, I would still be interested in checking it out. Of course John Turturro has to get permission first, but what are your thoughts on him possibly directing a Jesus-centric THE BIG LEBOWSKI spinoff?

We could finally find out what's in the box at the end! My guess; Gwyneth Paltrow's head.

Not sure

"If you pull that shit out on the lanes, I will take it from you, shove it up your ass and pull the trigger until it goes click!"
Although I loved his character in the movie, not sure if he has enough to pull off an entire film based on the character in the fashion of the Coen brothers feel.

God God, The Big Lebowski is my favorite movie of all-time and even I don't want this.

I think this is one of those ideas that sounds better on paper than it actually will be in practice.

He is a great actor (ignore Transformers - that movie turns everyone into a bad actor) and Jesus was GREAT!
I mean it all depends on the writing and story - I didn't think Frasier was a good enough character to carry his own tv series after cheers, but turns out I was wrong - didn't it last like 10 seasons or something?
So again it all depends - I would check it out for sure!

After his performances in the Transformers movies, I've got zero interest in anything he does. But a spinoff of that character doesn't make much sense. Was The Jesus just a nonspecific sex offender or was he a child molester? One means a possible misunderstanding like Charlie Day's character in Horrible Bosses and the other is a pretty ballsy choice for the lead in a movie... like stupid ballsy.

Hmmmm

love the character and would be awesome to see more of that world but Turtorro is a bit weak as a director in my opinion.

Sorry Jesus

"He even has the story worked out, which hes pitched to us a few times, but I cant really remember it..." If it were a good sustainable idea the Coens would be all over it and wouldn't need multiple pitches.

Not a good idea. The Jesus is awesome but I don't think he could sustain a full movie. I suppose if the script is seriously excellent there would be a chance, but I doubt it.

I'm not sure if that character alone can carry the whole movie. I'd rather see the whole cast back. Maybe a sequel.

As funny as the character was in The Big Lebowski, I really can't see the character holding his own film like the Dude in the original. You need the other characters in the original film to come back to make this at least comparable in terms of quality.
