Johnny Depp and Mia Wasikowska confirmed for Alice in Wonderland 2, Disney sets Memorial Day 2016 release

Nov. 22, 2013by:

Disney is banking on Johnny Depp to elevate another sequel. But, instead of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN it will be ALICE IN WONDERLAND 2. The 2010 Tim Burton film has a worldwide gross of over a billion dollars and remains the 28th highest grossing domestic film of all time. While Burton will not be back for the sequel, Depp and Mia Wasikowska will reprise their roles as The Mad Hatter and Alice. Disney set the release date as May 27, 2016.

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES is also tentatively set for a Summer 2016 release which would make for another big year for Disney after the upcoming STAR WARS and Marvel heavy 2015. After THE LONE RANGER came in well below projections and expectations, it is no doubt that Disney is going to be a little cautious about the sequel. ALICE IN WONDERLAND got a huge boost in box office due to being the first 3D movie after AVATAR debuted in 2009 but with audiences growing weary of the format, the sequel may not be quite as big.

Disney is keeping directing in house as James Bobin will take over from Burton. Bobin has directed two features, THE MUPPETS and THE MUPPETS MOST WANTED, both for Disney. Can he handle the FX heavy sequel? I would venture to say yes, but is anyone really excited to see this movie? The first one felt incredibly slow and not very unique. It felt like Burton was doing it just for the paycheck.

The biggest problem may have been taking the focus away from Alice and putting Johnny Depp front and center despite his character being a secondary one. They might as well have called it HATTER or MAD IN WONDERLAND. I appreciate how much money Depp commands for his roles, but don't supplant the story in favor of celebrity.

Hopefully ALICE IN WONDERLAND 2 will at least feel consistent even without Burton in the driver's seat, but I do hope they try and do something to set it apart from the pack.

Jesus, stop with the hate!

It always surprises me when people hate on Johnny Depp for doing what he does. All the "Get back to proper acting" rants. Seriously? His career was coasting along before he did Jack Sparrow (a character that is still awesome), and from there people - as in we, the audience - demanded for more of that. Did anyone pay attention to The Rum Diary? Or is anyone really tracking Mordecai, London Fields, or Into The Woods? Did anyone care to see The Tourist, as bad as it was? Nope. But when he slaps on

But when he slaps on a goofy face and prances around, people swarm in drones with their families to pay for tickets. Heck, it's the ONLY reason The Lone Ranger made as much as it did, however measly that amount may be. Alice In Wonderland made a billion f*cking dollars, literally. Why the hell would he stop doing what keeps him healthy, happy, wealthy, and in the spotlight? Would you?

Btw, I hated Alice In Wonderland because it was a f*cking bore, but that doesn't mean I'm going to hate on any of the actors for signing up again. I'm sure kids loved it, it made serious bank, and the sequel will do the same. If I had a career that paid me $50M and an island to play a goofy hatter, I'd be signing up for sequels too.

I wonder if it will be less of a CGI acid trip this time around

My biggest issue with the first film was Burton's reliance on special effects for virtually everything instead of more practical ones. Hopefully, whoever Disney has in mind, will capture great performances and a style that doesn't make all its actors look like ghost.

There's already a sequel title called Through the Looking Glass, but then again the original only vaguely respected the source material anyway. As in "not at all."

It would have been awesome if it's THE MUPPETS IN WONDERLAND.

For fucks sake Johnny, you're worth so much more.

...artistically speaking. Financially you probably couldn't be given much more at all.

What happened to Johnny Depp...instead of going for unique character roles, he has been cashing in on main stream roles..Pirates, the Jolie movie, and now Alice in the Wonderland...WTF...I know he is a great actor and will do well in the role, but another Alice in Wonderland is not the answer.

Im beginning to feel like Recently Depp has been making all cash-grab movies. Can just add this one to the list that seems to be growing steadily since the 1st Pirates movie...

Really disliked Depp's role in the first film - seemed really jarring, but perhaps that's how you convey madness when all around you is insane. I felt the tone of the movie was all over the place and (spoiler, if you can call it a spoiler) the Mad Hatter's dance thing actually made me angry with how awful it all was. The were a few nice ideas in there I'm sure, but I don't think a sequel will be harmed by Burton's absence or would be harmed by minimal involvement by Depp.

And that's why I didn't like Pirates of the Caribean 2-4

I would like Johnny to use his talents again instead of being in pointless sequels where no one will watch
