Johnny Depp is pondering retirement to focus on quieter pursuits, plus a new synopsis for Transcendence

2 years agoby:

When a superstar like Johnny Depp says that he has considered retirement to be "probably not too far away", the global media that idolizes him was expected to explode it across the Internet. Depp's fame hit it's peak with 2003's PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN and many are now wondering if the back to back failures of DARK SHADOWS and THE LONE RANGER may be signaling the decline of Depp's infallibility.

Depp clarified his statement to the BBC by saying that while he has though about retiring, he still feels that he is "not dropping out any second" as he already has projects lined up for several years, including PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 5, MORTDECAI, and Wally Pfister's TRANSCENDENCE. Depp is one of many high profile Hollywood celebrities such as Kevin Smith and Steven Soderbergh who have mulled retiring. Depp explained his motivation:

“At a certain point, you know, you start thinking … when you add up the amount of dialogue that you say per year … and you realize you’ve said written words more than you actually had a chance to say your own words, you start thinking of that as an insane option for a human being.”

Depp is an incredibly likeable actor (just ask my wife!) who brings everything to each role he is in, something I respect a hell of a lot. But, he has seemed like he has been coasting for a while now. I do hope that he doesn't retire but instead chooses more challenging and diverse roles in the future.

Speaking of which, his next film is Wally Pfister's TRANSCENDENCE which released an all-new synopsis today that gives us a little more insight into the mysterious project:

“Will Caster, forefather of A.I., has his consciousness uploaded onto the internet. Once there, is it really Will who is interacting with humanity in order to make things better, or a darker sinister clone bent on the termination of the world as we know it?”

That sounds even better than what we have heard about the film so far. And yet, we still know nothing. We don't really know who is playing who or even what the actual plot will be about. But, I know that Johnny Depp has a normal haircut and contemporary adult male clothing, so this could be just what his career needs to get rebooted and back to his skills as an actor.

Assuming Depp doesn't abruptly retire like an NFL player in the middle of production, TRANSCENDENCE will open April 18, 2014.

I rather not see Depp retire...problem is ..he got away from the kinds of movies that made him famous...he started doing more commercial movies...he needs to stick with those earlier movies he made. (with a Tim Burton movie thrown in once and a while).
I just think its too early for him to retire.

I don't want him to quit. I understand, and can appreciate, if he does. I've not bothered with his last few (yet). He really should sign on to some indie projects. Even if they aren't bug-nuts movies like he made his name with, I think doing like some of his colleagues, and not just chasing the box-office, would do him good.

Dude doesn't need the money and can probably sense that people are tiring of his Burton-flavoured schtick.
Hopefully he'll just work on stuff he really cares about instead of just being Disney's in-house box-office draw. He was great once, and can be again I'm sure. Taking the big-studio paycheck and shoe-horning his played out wackiness into films it doesn't really need to be in isn't doing him any favours - he can do better even if, financially, he doesn't need to.

He needs to start doing a few SERIOUS roles. maybe work with the coen bros, fincher, nolan, TARANTINO...ambitious directors who dont repeat themselves much and still bring great movies. he needs to stop being a pun of himself as he is my fav actor of all time, so its sad when i see what the new generation are seeing him as. Denzel is becoming the exact same too unfortunately. Depp needs to do a sci fi, horror, thriller, drama, ANYTHING thats not quirky

but may I provide some advice? Go out of your comfort zone. Get that fire back. Don't force yourself to do tent poles.

F*ck The Haters, Hope He Keeps Acting.

I know it's trendy to hate on Depp like you've seemingly outgrown his eccentric roles, but fact is I enjoy his movies. Even Tonto. I think The Lone Ranger is an entertaining and underrated film that was released in the wrong time and forced to compete with things like Despicable Me 2. Plus, the reason Depp takes these roles is because studios hire him for it. They don't want him playing The Tourist anymore because it doesn't sell one damn bit. People demanded for more of these "Sparrow-esque"

People demanded for more of these "Sparrow-esque" roles and he delivered as requested. Then people got fickle and wanted to sound like super-intelligent asshats and all of a sudden Depp is a hack. Give me a break. The man is good at what he does and it really isn't his fault that scriptwriters keep writing Jack Sparrow into his roles.

Exactly i loved him in the tourist and in his role as Sheldon Jeffrey Sands in once upon a time in mexico . When he does serious roles no one goes to see ! Take the secret window for example under rated movie they claim depp has bad acting but you can't blame the guy when the real problem is bad writing!

Who cares if you like him? Most people have grown tired of his shtick and that is evident in his dwindling box office returns. I'm not sure how you get people "demand" that Depp play more cartoon people. I would say the financial and critical results of Dark Shadows and Lone Ranger directly contradict that assertion. I guess those terrible Pirates sequels continue to make money, and he makes a fortune starring in them, but that is ONE character he has done multiple times. That doesn't equate to

Anyone that enjoyed The fucking Tourist is beyond my abilities to reason with. That shit was god awful.

Bullshit!

He just left his wife and family to chase after some lesbian tail.

He can't retire right after that.

In Hollywood, it's the norm, in the real world, it's called being a dick.

Oh please by Primus mean NO PIRATES 5!! Honestly, it's the same old shit, like Helena Bontham Carter. Those two need to find different movies that aren't the same roles they always play...or just retire.

Depp has been cashing enormous checks and phoning in mediocre performances for a decade now.

He can draw an audience, but what studios and agencies fail to account for is the audience's taste. Mainly, that they might have some. Depp's movies like The Tourist, Dark Shadows and Lone Ranger didn't fail because they were Depp movies, they failed because they sucked. Obviously not every crap movie fails or great movie succeeds, but a bad movie in concert with the audience's boredom at Depp

Obviously not every crap movie fails or great movie succeeds, but a bad movie in concert with the audience's boredom at Depp playing another cartoon character is enough for a failure. In the case of Lone Ranger a spectacular failure.

Depp monetized our appreciation for him by taking mountains of cash to do Pirates 2-4 and very soon to be 5. They were all horrible and it likely cost him a lot of the public's good will.

The public is crazy when the man does good movies they don't go and see them that or they barely break even but everyone complains when he does a movie like pirates 5 . If you stop going to see the pirates movies in droves maybe the guy will go back to doing more serious films.

I think it's really a shame that The Lone Ranger didn't fare better at the box office, since I thoroughly enjoyed that movie. When I think about it, I realized that maybe the biggest factor in its failure is not the quality of the film itself but rather our fatigue in seeing Johnny Depp doing what he actually does best. For the sake of his career, Johnny should keep making movies but at a smaller scale before tackling another big budget blockbuster. Movies like The Secret Window and Chocolat

Movies like The Secret Window and Chocolat (and to some extent even The Tourist) can give his fans the break they need to see their favorite actor without thick makeup before jumping into yet another Tim Burton movie.

regarding Depp's acting career, I totally agree that it's taken it's toll and perhaps even peaked. He's certainly been making a lot of repeat performances in his choice for roles lately. But I don't think it's so much as coasting as much as it's him enjoying the limelight. What I mean is that before Pirates he wasn't at the top of the A-List and I think he's just been enjoying his spot for some time and that's he's gotten his fill, he's ready to step back to where he was and be a little more

At least that's what I hope is going to happen, because when he's not being a weirdo on camera, the man can act....with the exception of The Tourist.

The Lone Ranger...

I feel like the Lone Ranger was the final lynch pin on Depp becoming a caricature of his formerly great self. Had he actually played the character "seriously" he would've surprised audiences and made them sit up and take notice as much as you could for a muddling two hours. But instead it was another mediocre over the top weirdo performance that people can get from four pirate films, Charlie and the chocolate factory, Alice in Wonderland and Dark Shadows. It's run it's course JD, time for

Personally

He's been making garbage for the past decade so i bet he can't even get consideration for most serious rolls. Too much Burton and Jack Sparrow has killed his career.

Very true. He would never admit as much, but Depp is in it for the money like most other actors. Nothing wrong with that, I suppose, but it is a little dishonest when you are trying to present yourself as a counterculture icon.
