Johnny Depp lined up to star in cinematographer Wally Pfister's directorial debut Transcendence

10.24.2012

Cinematographer Wally Pfister has been prepping his directorial debut, TRANSCENDENCE, and is now beginning the task of hiring actors to topline the pic.  Now, word is that Johnny Depp is taking the lead in the secret sci-fi project written by newcomer Jack Paglen and produced by Alcon co-founders and co-CEOs Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove.

“Johnny Depp is one of the most charismatic, talented actors imaginable and we are delighted he is with us on this project.” said Kosove and Johnson.

“I'm thrilled, and feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Johnny. He is a creative and intelligent artist whom I feel will bring great depth to the character and the overall narrative," said Pfister.

Pfister has been making the rounds of late, mostly taking potshots at the cinematography of Joss Whedon's THE AVENGERS, saying "I thought THE AVENGERS was an appalling film. They’d shoot from some odd angle and I’d think, why is the camera there? Oh, I see, because they spent half a million on the set and they have to show it off. It took me completely out of the movie. I was driven bonkers by that illogical form of storytelling."

Whedon responded simply by saying, “I’m sorry to hear it, I’m a fan.”

TRANSCENDENCE will begin shooting in early 2013 with a release date to be decided.  More as this develops.

Extra Tidbit: Let's hope Pfister can put his money where his mouth is.

Keep it on topic

I'm down, Pfister's work speaks for itself. I hope he can direct as well as he can shoot. He's definitely been around good directors. Depp can be so good under the right circumstances, I hope this is one of them.

And can we please just have an article pertaining to the topic at hand. Pfister casts Depp. That's it. I don't need the regurgitated sensationalism that seems to plague so much of the news around here...

I love Wally Pfister's work, but it's a bit of a surprise to hear him smack talk the Avengers. It's not a classy move is all I'm saying. He gained a lot of admiration from me after I saw the behind-the-scenes footage for "Batman Begins", including a clip where he filmed the training duel on the ice between Bruce and (then)-Ducard by sitting on a sled and being dragged around the ice to get the shots.

Eh, I did find the dutch angles in Avengers somewhat distracting, but I still enjoyed the film. It's a cheap shot from Pfister, but the man's still a beast behind the camera, hopefully he's still shooting as well as directing for this. Hoyte van Hotyema would be an awesome for Nolan to work with now.

What a douche

Oh, that's funny, because one of my main complaints about Nolan's Batman films is the bland cinematography.

Guess Pfister is pissed that Avengers got better reviews, and did better at the box office, than TDKR.

I don't get where the shit talking comes from. Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises were perfect. Wally shouldn't have said that. Whedon is the better man here. I love the films equally. I am though excited to see what Wally can come up with with his directorial debut.
