Johnny Depp not being sought for Doctor Strange, Kevin Feige says

Feb. 26, 2014by:

Last month brought us the rumor that Marvel was interested in having Johnny Depp star in their DOCTOR STRANGE film. Well, the "official" word was that they had a meeting with the actor, who would certainly be an intriguing choice for the role. But today that talk is being denied by none other than Marvel Studios head honcho, Kevin Feige.

In an interview with IGN, Feige admits that they're meeting with several people for DOCTOR STRANGE, but apparently Depp is not one of them. When asked if Marvel has reached out to Depp, Feige responded:

No, no. When you have a project that's been around as long as Doctor Strange, there is sometimes, "Oh, I've met with Stan about this! Or I did that!" So Strange is one of those projects that predates me by a long shot. Obviously, the character does, but even in its cinematic brewing. So there's a lot of things that have happened before me, and I've been here 14 years. So that's a long time ago. I don't know if that happened then.

Of course, Feige could be pulling the wool over our eyes, but at the moment we'll take his word for it.

Feige also denied the list of directors that had cropped up in a Hollywood Reporter article recently.

Well, that article [from The Hollywood Reporter] was true that we're meeting a lot of people now. That article was not true about who we're meeting or what level anybody is. But we're actively looking.

That list of directors was a strange one (no pun intended), as it included relative unknowns like Dean Israelite (helmer of WELCOME TO YESTERDAY) and Nikolaj Arcel (A ROYAL AFFAIR), but as Marvel is always thinking outside the box, there was no real reason to think it was inaccurate. Now there is.

So the question is, who do you think would made an ideal actor/director combo for DOCTOR STRANGE?

Marvel has proved they don't need a big name to have a hit

With Hemsworth carrying two Thor films as someone who isn't relatively popular, Marvel can take their chances with a relatively unknown actor for Strange. Marvel wants to capitalize on an actor who will sign a multi-picture deal that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Plus, they'll need someone young enough to carry the franchise on their own. I trust they will pick someone well suited for the role.

Oh bugger that...I was particularly fond of that possibility. I dunno who else I'd want...my first choice was Viggo...but it would of been Depp had I thought about it back then. I dunno - but he can't be too young on the count of Strange already being a leading Doctor in his field before he becomes the Sorcerer Supreme...so with that in mind, surely it's not going to be an up and coming actor they're looking at. Anyhoo, really thought the Depp stuff was true on the count of Marvel possibly

Anyhoo, really thought the Depp stuff was true on the count of Marvel possibly looking to reduce their dependency on RDJ. Depp would have been perfect - then again...perhaps Marvel don't want another actor whose so great...it would feel like the whole thing has fallen apart should they ever leave...or may be I'm just talking rubbish. Sure, I'm talking rubbish... Marvel have an amazing track record thus far...so I'm confident they'll select well.

Just a thought

Just an idea here, but give David Boreanaz a goatee and he might be a suitable candidate for Dr Strange?

Hmmmm, I like him but can't see him in that role. It's a little too big for his chops.

I would love to see Richard Kelly get a shot at a Marvel movie. I love his dark tone and think with a proper budget and support by Marvel he has the potential to create a damn fine Dr. strange flick.

I have been on the Viggo Mortensen bandwagon since they first rumored Doctor Strange.

Director wise... hmm... he would probably never do it but I would love to see Fincher tackle something like this, he can put together some awesome visuals and I think that would be amazing in this universe.

He would be perfect. They need someone with that level of charisma and acting chops (since Strange starts off very unlikable). I'm not sure who the second choice would be, but Viggo would make that film stunningly good.

I'm not very good at coming up with out of the box ideas...but if Marvel wanted a good actor with no star power to begin with... Alan Tudyk wouldn't be bad. Just, Doc Strange isn't a very recognisable hero to begin with for people outside of the comic world...so not sure it would help Marvel to cast an actor that people from outside of cult sci fi shows may not know of. I heard he was great in Doll House and whilst I've yet to see Firefly, I've seen the movie and he came across as the type of

I heard he was great in Doll House and whilst I've yet to see Firefly, I've seen the movie and he came across as the type of quirky actor Whedon always makes space for in his tv shows. He was also a blast in Transformers 3 (who didn't laugh at the scene in the Russian bar?) and was pretty sinister in V.

Thank goodness.....

That would be just what we need......Captain Jack Sparrow as the world's defender against magic attacks.

Depp used to be a very good actor, but after Pirates, Dark Shadows & Tonto, I can't imagine why anyone would want him to try to carry a franchise.

I would love to see either Jon Hamm, Luke Evans, or Timothy Olyphant for Doctor Strange.

For director, I have no idea. In a perfect world it would be Del Toro.

My personal choice for director - Matthew Vaughn (with Jane Goldman writing)

As for actor... I'd have to say Cumberbatch gets my vote.

I'm saying this because I got behind the idea of him as Lex Luthor, I'm still recovery from the Eisenberg disappointment - I want him to be involved in something 'super'... and I reckon Marvel's the place to be.

No love for Jason Isaacs or Patrick Dempsey?

Jason Isaacs was Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter series. Patrick Dempsey is Dr. Derek Shepherd on Grey's Anatomy.

RDJ worked for Iron Man because he was risk, he had really started to fall off and the role of Iron Man rose his beyond everyone's craziest expectation.

There is talk that after AVENGER 3 they want to shift focus as Marvel lead hero. Johnny Depp fits the bill as the next Robert Downey Jr, someone who started to have fallen from grace (take it RDJ fall was much harder) and needs something to ressurecting his career, more Pirates is not the answer to that. I'd love to see Luke Evans. He really impressed me as Bard in The Hobbit The Desolation of Smaug. He has that look about him, that intensity, and his acting chops are sound, I think.

Honestly I think they should go with someone older for the Doctor. Someone that is believable to have practiced his whole life to be the Sorcerer Supreme. I liked the rumor of Viggo but I doubt he would do it. However I recently just thought of someone who would be perfect.....JEFF GOLDBLUM!! Seriously he could knock this role out of the park. He fits the older bill but also has the charisma to fill RDJ's shoes. Just a thought.

I actually read a list of different 'Dr. Strange' directors from Jumpkickpunch a few days back. They reported that Marvel and Feige were looking at Simon West (Con Air, Expendables 2, and The Mechanic), Jaume Collet-Serra (Orphan, and Unknown), Rob Bowman (Castle (TV Show Pilot), and Reign of Fire), and Mark Mylod (Once Upon a Time (TV show pilot), and What's Your Number). I'm not sure how true this list is, but it acutally makes more sense than the other one posted last week. It seems like

It seems like Marvel is always looking for bargain directors who also show flashes of talent like the Russo brothers, so I can see someone on this list getting the job.

Coming into this discussion I didn't have anyone in mind per se but having read the comments I will absolutely go bonkers at the studio's lost opportunity if I hear they didn't go for Jim Cavaziel. I can 100% imagine him raining magic and badassery. The great this is he wouldn't have to force anything. He's a deceptively subtle actor. Not necessarily a great one but I think he just needs a good script to shine.

Another choice I think would bring everything needed I read here is Timothy
