Johnny Depp not Pancho Villa, Gael Garcia Bernal and Benicio Del Toro eyeing part

It’s no surprise that with so many plates spinning, one of them had to fall eventually. Johnny Depp was previously attached to play the lead in Emir Kusturica’s (deep breath) THE SEVEN FRIENDS OF PANCHO VILLA AND THE WOMAN WITH SEVEN FINGERS, but now he’s had to drop out of the film due to scheduling conflicts with his zillion other projects.

It’s a big loss for the film, as it will likely receive considerably less attention with Depp’s departure, but it does open the door for an actor who is actually of Latino descent to take on the role.

The two frontrunners are now Benicio Del Toro and Gael Garcia Bernal, both of whom have played Che Guevara at one point in their careers. Playing a different type of revolutionary is probably not too much of a stretch for either of them, and I actually would have liked to see what Depp did with the role.

Who do you think would be better suited for the part? The gritty Del Toro or the suave Bernal?
