Johnny Depp to play a supercomputer in Transcendence...What?

Dec. 11, 2012by: Niki Stephens

It is true Johnny Depps brain is uploaded into a computer."

This quote from Andrew Kosove, who is producing on TRANSCENDENCE. Depp has signed on to star in the sci-fi film from Christopher Nolan, who is executive producing, and Wally Pfister, Nolans Oscar-winning cinematographer who will make this his directorial debut.

The plot involves, "a scientist whose brain gets uploaded into a supercomputer with the aim of creating the worlds first machine that can think for itself." Newcomer Jack Paglen is the scribe.

Okay, here's where I need you to stay with me. The Wrap got some details on the story from a close source. Alcon states that any early plot summary might be outdated, and subject to future revisions. Warner Bros. called it "speculation." Anyway, on to the possible details:

"Three scientists -- Max and the husband and wife team, Will (Depp) and Evelyn -- have been developing a programming code for the worlds first fully self-aware computer. A group of anti-technology terrorists assassinate Will, Evelyn uploads his brain into a prototype supercomputer. Although she at first finds the experiment seems to have gone wrong, before too long Evelyn finds Will responding in computer form. She goes on to connect Will to the Internet so he can help make further scientific breakthroughs. Will asks Evelyn to connect a microphone and a camera up to the computer so he can see and speak to her as well. When the anti-technology organization finds out, they try to steal the supercomputer and destroy it, but Will no longer needs the computer to survive."

They say that several stars are circling the remaining roles. Let's get the no's of the casting out of the way: Ewan McGregor passed on an early draft. Tom Hardy is busy with other projects. Noomi Rapace is not rumored for a role, and like Hardy, Kate Winslet is not available.

Cheap title trick

well done, Joblo. You got me interested with "Johnny Depp signs on to Christopher Nolan sci fi yada yada" only to find out he's producing. Thats like saying Shia Lebouf cast in Steven Spielberg's Transformers.

Is Depp actually allowed to work with someone other than Tim Burton or Gore Verbinski?

Anyway, good for Depp. Finally an exciting project. Now don't pull a Grand Budapest Hotel and fuck this all up somehow.

Was that a plot synopsis or the movie outline? Seem like they covered most of the movie with that summation.

Sounds familiar...

Isn't there already some movie coming out involving a scientist uploading his brain to a computer just before being killed? I think it involves a robot body though, but otherwise it sounds kind of similar. I can't remember what it's called, but I saw a trailer for it a while ago..

i'm always optimistic about new writers and directors for sci-fi (especially when they have Nolan's backing). hopefully they bring something interesting to the table.

Awesome!

Reminds me of "Ghost In the Shell." When is Hollywood going to start mining manga & anime as the next big selling genre? They need to do it! "Akira!" Come on! I can't wait to hear screams of "Tetsuuuoooo!" and "Kanedaaaa!" in a theater.

They scrapped that one. And from what I understand, it was fairly unmourned as a Hollywood project.

I like EVERYTHING Nolan has done so far, and Depp's movies are always good, so this is pretty exciting news. Not to mention the plot sounds intriguing.

So that is how skynet became self aware. Someone uploads their brain in and then a bunch of people try to stop it before machines become self aware. Interesting.
