Jon Favreau calls summer 2011 a box office "bloodbath"

11.02.2010

This isn't that much of a news story, but more of a "stop and look" moment for me. Jon Favreau is busy prepping COWBOYS AND ALIENS for release next year, but he's worried about his film getting lost in the shuffle.

Here's a refresher of what's coming out in the spring/summer months alone, and it's going to be a far cry from this year which had GROWN UPS, THE LAST AIRBENDER and SALT rounding out the top ten of the season.

We'll have GREEN LANTERN, THOR, CAPTAIN AMERICA, HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2, TRANSFORMERS: THE DARK OF THE MOON, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBERAN: ON STRANGER TIDES, THE HANGOVER 2, CARS 2, KUNG FU PANDA: THE KABOOM OF DOOM, SMURFS 3D, SUPER 8, X-MEN: FIRST CLASS and RISE OF THE APES. I'll let Favreau put this in metaphor form while speaking to the LA Times:

It’s Omaha Beach, it’s going to be a bloodbath. There’s never been a summer like this next summer. It’s going to be bloody [for filmmakers and the studios]. As we were sticking thumb tacks in a calendar we realized that this is going to be looked back upon as Omaha Beach.

There’s not a weekend where there won’t be teeth on the floor. The audience wins but it’s going to be rough for people making these movies. Then there was the big rush to 3D, so you have all of these people fighting for a limited number of screens and to get the 3D done, since most of these are hybrids or conversions, so this is a technology that is still in the relatively early stages and there’s going to be a lot of blood pressures going up in the months ahead.

Well as a moviegoer I'm certainly pumped for next year, though this does remind me a bit of summer 2009 where we had a ton of high profile projects like WOLVERINE ORIGINS, TRANSFORMERS 2, TERMINATOR SALVATION, GI JOE, which failed to deliver for many, myself included. Hopefully that isn't the case this time around.

Extra Tidbit: Which of these films are you MOST excited about? Top three.
