Jon Favreau says Marvel sees Iron Man 3 as a sequel to Thor, Captain America, and The Avengers

Dec. 7, 2010by: George Merchan

While filmmaker Jon Favreau toils away on the upcoming genre mash-up COWBOYS & ALIENS, he's been allowing press access to the editing room of that film in an effort to raise more proper awareness. While there, though, MTV got a chance to sit down with the director and talk a bit about IRON MAN 3.

Favreau has admitted to not knowing exactly where the third film might go due to the ever-changing nature of the assembly of these films in both production and post, but he does now say that Marvel wants the plot of IRON MAN 3 to hinge on the events that take place in THOR, CAPTAIN AMERICA, and THE AVENGERS.

"Kevin Feige, who's been involved with Marvel since the X-MEN films, is very aware of his path and how to weave the things. So in theory, IRON MAN 3 is going to be a sequel or continuation of THOR, HULK, CAPTAIN AMERICA, and AVENGERS. So that whole world... I have no idea what it is. I don't think they do either, from conversations I've had with those guys."

It's been known that Marvel is trying to create a single, coherent superhero movie universe, but this is the first we're hearing about how exactly that goal is going to play out post-AVENGERS. Will IRON MAN 3, however, be able to avoid some of the pitfalls encountered during IRON MAN 2, a decent sequel that had the unenviable task of having to awkwardly introduce elements for the other upcoming Marvel projects?

Check out the full video interview with MTV below for more from Favreau.

Extra Tidbit: If you've been waiting for any bit info on THOR, stay tuned; my report from the set of that film will be hitting this Friday.

This isn't too surprising seeing as how Iron Man has been leading up to all these movies.

Too early to say but didn't they already set a release date for Iron Man 3? Now they're saying it takes place after a film that's only released a year beforehand. Sounds like the script won't even be worked on until a good portion of the Avengers production is finished. Just hope it's not rushed. That's my main concern. Iron Man 2 felt rushed.

I expected as much seeing as how Iron Man 2 was essentially just Avengers 0. I mean, large chunks of the film existed for the sole purpose of teasing us about an Avengers movie. I do think that Marvel is getting a little too excited and really rushing these films and we'll see a serious drop in quality. Unfortunate, but I think that's how this will go.

BTW, whatever happened to that whole thing about having live-action shorts play before the feature films for the minor Marvel characters?

While I think it's pretty awesome how Marvel are creating a common universe for all their heroes, I can't help but wonder if they're also setting themselves up for a major upset. IF The Avengers fails for some reason, they'll have to rewire all their future plans to fit into a universe that ignores The Avengers altogether. And when that happens it's going to look obvious and sucky as hell.

Well I, for one, am not worried. Favreau is just being honest, which is what makes him so cool. I'm sure it's all a bit hectic. Joss Whedon is doing The Avengers, remember? The leader of the nerds and creator of Buffy, Firefly and Serenity. Doing The Avengers. All of our geek dreams have come true.

they should wrap it all up with iron man 3. iron man 1 started this whole marvel craze, and iron man 3 would be a nice bookend to the series

How will this work since Disney has the distribution rights to Iron Man 3 while Paramount has Thor and Captain America?

"Iron Man 2" A decent sequel???

I thought "Iron Man 2" was awful. First of all, Downey? Just wear the goddamned suit. I know it's a pain in the ass, but putting the suit on you with CGI looks like shit. And it's lame. You're playing "Iron Man," so BE "Iron Man." Also, why is Justin Theroux writing these? He's an ok actor and a mediocre writer - at best. So many things wrong with the second film. One of the few bright spots? John Slattery as Stark Sr.

I have faith that the people at Marvel know what they're going to do with the rest of this universe. With "Iron Man 3" being after "The Avengers", does that mean then we will see the other members make cameos in "Iron Man 3" since the public will know who they are and the fact that they have already been established? Marvel also needs to introduce the new Bruce Banner/Hulk in one of these upcoming cameos before "The Avengers", to make it feel less akward and more subtle when the whole team

I'll call this one Iron Man 2, not 3. I consider the Iron Man 2 we got just a bunch of deleted (w/ good reason) outtakes from the awesome first one. I'll call it Iron Man 1.5. And can we get Mandarin please? If we get just another dude in a super armored suit as the villain . . .

Have you taken a look at his villains? 99% of them wear armored suits. Hell some versions of the Mandarin do too

Argh. They don't get it. Iron Man 3 should not be a sequel to Thor, nor Cap, nor Avengers, it should be a sequel to... you guessed it! THE IRON MAN SERIES. For fuck's sake that's what the "3" is there for.

I have no problem w/ it (unless it's not good) but there shouldn't be any Avengers showing up. Just Iron-Man and maybe Nick Fury.

Iron Man 2 was barely an Iron Man movie and more a lead in to the Avengers. It's sad to hear.

I liked Iron Man 2, and I think all the Marvel films up to and including Avengers will be good. After that, anything can happen. Iron Man 3 will work because of its popular first 2 films. I'm not sure Capt America and Thor will get individual sequels unless the first film is really sucessful (they just aren't as popular or interesting). Hulk is just a mess with all the actor changing. Avengers 2 could be possible, if they can get the cast back together. I'm curious to see how things turn out

No kidding. It's all just the same part of a magnificent tapestry. Call it "sequel" or call it a continued look in to the evolving Marvel Universe, I really don't care what you label it. Iron Man 2 was still the best adventure film of the summer by far. So, why not let the hit string play out and see where it leads?
