Jon M. Chu is the top contender to direct Star Trek 3

Aug. 5, 2013by: Alex Maidy

If this rumor is true, I quit the f*cking world.

Latino Review has the scoop that Paramount's top contender to take over J.J. Abrams' directing duties for the next STAR TREK movie is none other that Jon M. Chu. Chu is responsible for the classic films G.I. JOE: RETALIATION and JUSTIN BEIBER: NEVER SAY NEVER.

The rumored shortlist for STAR TREK 3 includes Brad Bird, Joe Cornish, and Justin Lin. Of the contenders, Latino Review was able to confirm that Chu is far atop the list. Chu's other directorial efforts include the second and third STEP UP movies. Why he is a contender is his availability to get STAR TREK 3 made by the 2016 50th Anniversary of the original series and because J.J. Abrams is locked up with STAR WARS: EPISODE VII.

When Chu was announced as the director for G.I. JOE, I thought it was an odd choice but was pleasantly surprised at how decent the movie was. Yes, decent, but not great. When you are following the cinematic footsteps of Stephen Sommers, anything is a step up. But, love or hate STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS or it's predecessor, there is a quality to the filmmaking that maintains a level of, I don't know...just anyone except Jon Chu.

I know I am being judgmental here, but if J.J. Abrams is good enough to go from STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS to STAR WARS, shouldn't the bar be set a hell of a lot higher for the person taking over TREK? I am suddenly losing hope in the third film. Damon Lindelof is back to script the third film and Abrams will produce. Rumors have the story centering on the Klingons and the possible return of Khan. Actor Karl Urban recently made comments that he wants the sequel to STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS to focus on more originality and not another revenge theme like the first two flicks. Hiring Chu smacks of anything but originality.

Extra Tidbit: Well, the next one is the third film and the odd numbered TREK movies do traditionally suck.

Bad move, sucker!

Sure, GI JOE: Retaliation was much better than the first one, but that's like saying a cold is better than pneumonia. Why would anyone with half a brain pick him over those three??? This has to be the dumbest idea ever!

Oh no!!! But who will direct gi joe 3 then?

Now i've lost all faith in gi joe 3.

I made a shortlist of mediocre directors who shouldnt be allowed near franchises like star trek, die hard or remakes of already good movies, john chu, len wisemen, john moore, brett ratner, mcg.....
Brad bird is the best choice of that list but there are more, neil blomkamp, ridley scott, steven spielberg(although i think he lost it) joseph krazninskysomething(tron, oblivion) and probably a lot more who can give a movie something special.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO! Okay J.J., drop what you're doing and stop this.

Although I'm wondering if there was some confusion and the original news was that John Cho is returning for ST3.

Hell NO!!!

Well first off I'll tell you this won't happen. This isn't 1 or 2 steps back from J.J Abrams but more like 5 steps back. While G.I Joe 2 was better than the first it was still a bad film. For a big franchise Chu would be terrible. Brad Bird and Justin Lin are better choices.

I thought that Retaliation was pretty entertaining & I surely didn't hate it. It sure as hell wasn't on the same level as the new Star Trek flicks. Not to mention that I'd prefer a director with a bit more experience to step in J.J.'s shoes.

Chu is the weakest director on their list. His GI Joe wasn't really better than the first, it just had different problems. Depending on which problems you focus on (cartoon-y action and jokes vs. weak plot and characters), determines which GI movie you prefer.
Technically if Zack Quinto is really following in Spock's footsteps, he should be directing the third movie. How crazy would that be.

fuck this guy

I loved the first GI JOE movie, it was over the top and corny but it was fun as hell. I loved how campy and action packed it was. The second one took out all the cheese and left us with a bland and underwhelming action movie. He ruined GI JOE.

The first 2 Star Treks are great, and i knew this would happen. if JJ Abrams left Star Trek for Star Wars, it would only hurt the established franchise he created for himself. Yes i know Star Trek is bigger than him and there will always be TREK

Yes i know Star Trek is bigger than him and there will always be TREK movies, but i was hoping a solid trilogy out of Abrams would be established and then they would turn to Next Gen for movies, then you get some new guy in the mix.

I'm willing to wait until 2017 so that JJ Abrams could finish up his Trekkie Trilogy. Anything but this guy

Masterchief: you know what i mean, just as the current Doctor Who is Steven Moffat's show, and the last few Batman movies have been Christopher Nolan's creation, "Star Trek" and "Star Trek into Darkness" have been Abram's universe to run. Replacing him with someone like Chu practically shits on the work Abrams put into that universe, let alone Roddenberry

Oh, I thought it was the guy who did Fast Five and Fast & Furious 6.

I was thinking of Justin Lin.

While I honestly did enjoy GI Joe: Retaliation a ton, I do not see him being a good director at all for this Star Trek project. He can stage action sequences, but can't stage a narrative worth his life. But the thing is Star Trek isn't an action movie... it's much deeper than that. Honestly, I think Star Trek is more of a social mirror drama sci-fi with action elements here and there, rather than an action sci-fi.

Not liking this news :(

I have to add my red to the fire. I don't want this guy anywhere near Star Trek 3. Directing action set pieces is one thing but a person doing Trek also needs to be able to direct PEOPLE as well, and I don't think Chu is capable of that.

WHY YOU BE SO RETARDED PARAMOUNT?!

WHY? WHY? WHY? WHY?

Do you see how this article is currently at zero percent? And the fact that its at zero surprises absolutely no one? What makes me truly sad is the fact that unfortunately the studio heads you get paid tens of millions are so out of the loop that they actually thought this choice would make us happy.

I'm pretty sure as soon as someone makes to the top of a movie studio, they're immediately hit in the head with a hammer. That would explain decisions like this.

Just wait for JJ, Paramount. Who gives a shit about some anniversary? Wait for him to actually make a GOOD Trek film instead of rushing a crappy one to get it out in 2016.

If not JJ Abrams then please get Brad Bird. He's one of the few directors I can see actually surpassing what Abrams did with the first two films.

If they hire Chu, then they might as well not make it at all.

All the other choices are soooooo muuuuuuch betttttttfter. If he does direct this that's another franchise that's gonna take hit (fast 7 being the other, but you (or at least I) can't blame that one all on the director.)

GI Retaliation was bad

I was hoping Paramount would have wanted to go with someone who knows how to, well, actually direct. I'm hoping this isn't true and they wait for a more talented director.

I never liked Star Trek until I saw Abrams' two films. INTO DARKNESS was great fun.

Looks like I'm about to dislike it again. This is a horrible, awful idea. The second G.I. JOE was utter garbage, its only bright spot being Dwayne Johnson. Chu is too inexperienced to handle a big-budget franchise like Trek. Brad Bird is the obvious choice, but apparently Hollywood execs have their heads up their own asses.

Hey, why all the red? While I don't think it's likely, and while he probably shouldn't do it, I don't think he's a terrible director or deserves to be put in the same category as John Moore, McG, Brett Ratner, Paul W.S. Anderson or Len Wiseman. And even those guys have their "saving grace" moments. Give Jon M. Chu a chance! Well, maybe not with Trek 3, but a chance in general.

I have a hard time believing this story

First off, Brad Bird is doing TOMORROWLAND so there's no way he'd be available for STAR TREK 3. Joe Cornish has ANT-MAN (and his involvement just jumped my interest in that movie a few notches!), not sure about Justin Lin.

But yes, anybody save Bird and Cornish would be a sizable step down for this movie.

That would make it 4 shit 'Star Trek' films in a row. Has that ever happened before? The last semi-decent one was in 1996? Wow.
