Jonathan Nolan and David Goyer are in fact candidates to direct Superman?

Jul. 23, 2010by: George Merchan
A couple of weeks ago, we reported on a rumor that Jonathan Nolan (screenwriter of THE DARK KNIGHT, THE PRESTIGE), brother of Christopher "INCEPTION is da shiiit!" Nolan, was up to direct SUPERMAN: MAN OF STEEL. Not too far-fetched considering Chris Nolan was brought in to "shepherd" the franchise, but a rumor without strong backing nevertheless. But now?

But now we have MORE rumor to fuel the fire, this time courtesy of The Playlist. The boys at the site have apparently had information fed to them that reveals some of WB's plans on the impending superhero reboot. Here's some of what they had to say:

- Despite our massive skepticism, Jonah Nolan is apparently the frontrunner to direct "Superman." At least right now he is.

- Another name in the mix is "The Dark Knight" co-writer David S. Goyer, and yes, as a director, but he's potentially busy with another gig/deal for another superhero film (the story and script on "Man Of Steel" is his).

- WB want a writer/director for this "Superman" reboot as it would be cheaper than hiring writers and a director.

- Apparently the film was offered to the Wachowskis, but they balked.

- Some MAJOR Announcements are expected at Comic Con

Major announcements, huh? Well let's see if that happens in the coming days. To read the rest of what The Playlist has to say on the matter, just click RIGHT HERE.
Extra Tidbit: Between Goyer and Nolan, one experienced and one inexperienced, who would you prefer to take the directorial reins of this film (assuming no one else is up for the gig)?

Am I the ony one...

Who thinks an adaptation of The Death of Superman would be incredible? What General Zod did to Metropolis would be nothing compared to the destruction Doomsday wreaks.

BTW, Nolan FTW.

Honestly, I've been dying to see that myself. The fights Superman and Doomsday were that of legend. In fact, I'm going to read the book right now..

Why not hire a REAL director instead of trying to leach a non-director from TDK writing team?

Jonathan Nolan is not a director. Goyer is a bad director. Either of these two choices would be terrible.

I think the Wachowski's would have been good for the action sequences. Which would be a nice change from Superman Returns. But, I doubt they would want to work under Chris Nolan. They'd probably rather have the control themselves.

As for the Superman casting, can we please have Jon Hamm and not an early 20-something no-name?

I'm sure whatever the Nolan Brothers come up with will be good, but I feel like WB is just playing it safe with this choice. I'd rather see a director a little less-well known with a passion for the material hired. WB was willing to take a chance on Nolan by giving him Batman, I can't see why they wouldn't do the same with Superman.

The Wachowskis????? WTF!

Thank god the Wachowskis balked. How dumb can WB be. they haven't made a decent movie since the first Matrix film. It's simple, Johnathan Nolan needs to direct this film, with his brother peering over his shoulder, and Goyer writing with J-Nolan. Do that and this movie will rock!

"WB wouldn't give a $100 Million + to a first time film director"?

Well David Yates directed Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix with no feature film directing experience. If Nolan can direct just half as well as he writes then I think we would have a hell of a film.

Nolan, for sure. Goyer is a great writer but as a director he falls flat. Also, wouldn't it be interesting having the Nolan brothers heading the two biggest DC franchises?

Director - Jonathan Nolan
To Play Superman - Jon Hamm
To Ply Lois Lane - Jennifer Morrison
Villian - Doomsday

Would love to see this happen the right way.

Thank god it wasn't the Wachowski's

With their obsession for sex and sexuality completely derailing the Matrix, Bound being one of the worst movies of the 90s, and the less we say about Speed Racer the better, they'd have tanked this film.

No doubt they'd have scripted some kind of Lana-Lois-Superman three way love triangle, and some kind of flash back to Krypton clubbing/sex orgy allegory.

Either Goyer or Nolan 2 will do, if Chris is on hand for them. Goyer isn't the strongest of directors, but he seems to work well with

While I agree about their obsession with sexuality in The Matrix, "one of the worst movies of the 90s"? Really?

And Speed Racer is incredible. Amazing fun movie, and one of the only movies that had me cheering in the theater. i'd rather go with nolan of the two. i wish he had another directing gig to prove he's capable, but i trust that his brother will keep him in line. goyer's directing gigs have not been impressive at all. he's great at crafting a story, but otherwise i haven't been terribly impressed.

Well, this is a mixed bag. Goyer is a pretty shitty director, however, he apparently has talent when he works with the Nolans (though I'm sure we can all assume who really has the talent in that partnership). I'd go with Jonah Nolan despite his inexperience.
Though what the hell is Warner Bros. thinking? They wanna save money by hiring a writer/director? Why not just hold auditions at Walmart to see who wants to direct it?

Not a fan...

This whole crew has to stop. Can't wait for their time to pass; Goyer most of all. There hearts on in the right place but they're too obsessed with their own cleverness to tell an interesting story... so we actually care.

Nolan

Let Nolan do it.. you know if he gets the job, his brother is going to help or at least I'd hope they would try to get the combo. And if you want a "dark" Superman movie (to soboyle).. then bring in Doomsday or someone like that. Someone actually capable of killing Superman would be a good change from the old school of "oh look kryptonite.."

But I vote for Jonah too, his brother can and will probably help.

Extra tidbit: I assume you're referring to Goyer as the "experienced" director, but that's not saying much, as all of his films have been total shit. I'd trust an 11 year-old with a Sony Handicam more than I would Goyer. He's had some good ideas, but that's about it. If Nolan is half as good a filmmaker as his brother, we'll have one badass Superman flick.

The idea that DC is thinking about saving money at this point is worrisome. They should be more concerned about quality product. If Chris Nolan is the producer then it should be his call who he hires as the director.

Superman needs a director that knows how to shoot epic action sequences.

I Believe In John Nolan.

Given the choice, I'd pick "the other Nolan" in a second. The man does a fantastic job at writing, we've seen that, and with Chris overseeing this project, John shouldn't have much problems revitalizing the Superman franchise, following in his brother's footsteps. For all you know, John could be as good as Chris. Goyer, on the other hand, writes well. Directing abilities? Not so much. Watch Blade Trinity, I'm sure you'll agree.

my vote goes for Nolan, he can write his ass off and i'm sure his brother will be there every step of the way to make sure he doesnt mess it up.

After seeing The Unborn, The Invisible, and especially Blade Trinity i think Goyer is better behind the keyboard and should stay away from the actual camera.

If they can work with Martin Campbell to try to get some continuity in these films we might actually get a Justice League movie before 2020 ...but i wont hold my breath.
