Jordan Peele reportedly being sought to direct Akira

03.30.2017

Even when 2017 comes to a close one of the most talked-about movies of the year will be GET OUT. The horror/thriller surprised everyone by maintaining 99% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and as of this writing is closing in on $150 million at the domestic box office. Director Jordan Peele is the first African American director to have a $100 million debut, so naturally his talent is making him a hot commodity. Apparently Warner Bros. is so anxious to get into the Peele business that they’re reportedly looking to give him one of their biggest properties – AKIRA.

The Tracking Board is reporting that Warner Bros. is “moving aggressively” to sign Peele to the project after the immense success of GET OUT. WB has yet to comment on the matter, but the report also mentions they might have also been looking at him to direct THE FLASH. Though that card could supposedly still be on the table, AKIRA is the film the studio wants the budding director to tackle with talks being "encouraging."

Either way you spin it it looks like WB is looking to give Peele something big to direct, with AKIRA being the number one choice. GET OUT was a big success by any standard, but given the modest budget and subject matter it’s triumph is all the more sweet. WB probably isn’t the only studio looking at Peele, so if all of this is true we can expect news of his involvement to become official relatively soon.

But until such a time when all of this is confirmed all we can do is imagine what a Peele AKIRA would look like. Purely as a director I think Peele is up to the task, mainly because I don’t think he’s the kind of man to go into something without a clear, distinct vision. Between KEY AND PEELE, GET OUT and even KEANU he comes across as a guy who knows exactly what he wants to do and how to make it unique. That’s step one in making any great movie, so having that in the bag with AKIRA is reassuring.

GET OUT could very well still be at a theater near you, and the latest anime live-action remake, GHOST IN THE SHELL, arrives tomorrow.

Peele would be great for The Flash

I'm a fan of the Akira manga and have seen the anime multiple times, and I'm not at all opposed to a live action remake. Peele might or might not be a good fit for it, offhand though it doesn't seem like a very natural fit. But Flash? Seriously, make that happen.

No

Leave this in the Hands of Leo stay on as a producer, he has been battling for years to do this project. I would leave this in his hands, seeing on what kind of a massive Akira fan he is. Or god forbid we hire a Japanese director, to take this project on with Hollywood money behind it, I'm surprised that Hollywood hasn't tried hiring a director for any Japanese animation film adaptation, thats close to the source material.. or the culture of this films.

Get Out was fine and all, but Akira is a huge budget production...

Peele isn't ready. Look at how horrible Ghost In The Shell turned out and that is like half as sci-fi as Akira, and that director had done big budget movies before.

Noooooooooooooo!

Look...Key and Peele was great and I liked Get Out, but this is not something I would NOT want to see happen. Its like a 16 year old after their 1st week of driving. Kid: "Hey Dad I've been driving for a whole week, no tickets, no accidents, nothing bad to report" Dad: "Great job, everyone is really proud of what you've done. Now lets fly to Indiana because I signed you up to race the Indy 500". Akira needs a seasoned director with action and effects experience IMO.

Is this WB approach to counter predictable white washing criticism? Hire a hot new black director?

Jordan Peele has spoken at length about his plans. He's got a number of movie ideas I want to see. This is not one of them.

This is what Hollywood studios do.

This guy was recently successful with a small-budgeted film that allowed him to properly express his voice.
"Let's snap him up as quickly as possible and make him deal with committees and take away anything that made him distinct."

SAY NO, JORDAN! Get Out showed what a unique filmmaking voice Jordan Peele has. He needs to be directing his own ideas and scripts, not a live-action remake of an incomprehensible but beautiful anime.

If Ghost in the Shell makes some decent cash, I'm sure that'll liven up these negotiations.
