Jordan Peele will begin directing his next film this year

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

One year after the release of Jordan Peele’s GET OUT we are still talking about the movie constantly, which means it’s made a pretty big impact. That and a few huge Oscar nominations have helped. But now Peele is eyeing his next project, and during a recent interview said he is already writing the movie and that he will be directing this year.

The Oscar-nominated writer/director was being interviewed for The Hollywood Masters series at the Loyola Marymount University’s School of Film and TV, and there is talked about how is already deep into the writing process. “I am currently writing it, and I'll direct for Universal this year,” he said. “I’m just trying to entertain myself again.”

Everyone will surely be comparing whatever the work is to GET OUT, and though Peele says the movie will resemble his first effort in a certain way, he will ultimately try to tackle a different topic.

One thing I know is that this is genre; and playing around with the thriller, horror, action, fun genre of intrigue is my favorite. That’s my sweet spot. So I think tonally it should resemble Get Out. That said, I want to make a completely different movie. I want to address something different than race in the next one.

It was revealed as early as last year that Peele was planning to direct a new movie for Universal, and like GET OUT, it would be a “social thriller.” The release date around being tossed around at that time was March 15, 2019, and if Peele pumps out the script and starts filming soon that release sounds realistic.

Very few filmmakers, if any, have received the level of acclaim Peele has after their first film, which also happened to be a massive hit at the box office. Everyone's eyes will be on Peele to create something that can live up to GET OUT and I would understand if that were too daunting a task. Peele seems confident and anxious to get back behind the camera, though, and he seems focused on this new film. Whatever it is I'm sure it will be great. Peele is a natural filmmaker, and as long as he sticks to his guns he'll be fine. Just keep in mind, Mr. Peele, that if your next movie doesn't make $200 million and get at least five Oscar nominations it will be considered a massive bomb.

GET OUT competes for several Oscars on Sunday, March 4.
