Jose Padilha will not copy Paul Verhoeven for the Robocop remake

Sep. 21, 2011by: Niki Stephens

There's still a ROBOCOP remake. Jose Padilha (ELITE SQUAD) is still helming. I can't wait to see that ROBOCOP statue one day (yes, they are still trying).

It's been awhile since we've had any news on this subject. Today an interview with Padilha was found on the Dutch film site, Film1. Here Padhila talks about how he's going to handle the remake.

This is what he said when asked how his version will differ from Verhoeven's:

"I love the sharpness and political tone of RoboCop, and I think that such a film is now urgently needed. But I will not repeat what Verhoeven has done so clearly and strongly. Instead I try to make a film that will address topics that Verhoeven untreated. If you are a man changes into a robot, how do you do that? What is the difference between humans and robots developed? What is free will? What does it mean to lose your free will? Those are the issues that I think."

So it's the same but different. We are going to go inside the mind of the Robocop and address his feelings. Okay...still not sold.

Blah blah blah blah...

Same bullshit, different director. They all talk about how "different" their take will be on the movie and then they realize half-way through pre-production that the original movies are awesome for a reason and begin to pick at those same elements for the remake.

That, or they end up as Movie-by-committee. I'm not too familiar with this director, but Spielberg he ain't. You think a studio is going to let him spend scores of millions of dollars making a Robocop that doesn't 'splode a lotta shit?

I have to go. Somewhere there's a crime happening. They're remaking Robocop and it sounds PG-13.

Anyone who thinks the first two Robocop films didn't tackle the concepts of lost humanity and lost free will probably isn't overly familiar with the originals. These issues are at the very core of Robocop's character - the good cop, stripped of everything that made him human except the essential essence of his humanity, which is what allows Murphy to rise above his status as mere OCP product. Verhoeven and Kershner made two movies that managed to fuse the somewhat existentialist concept of

Verhoeven and Kershner made two movies that managed to fuse the somewhat existentialist concept of "What makes us human?" with some quality violence, social commentary and end-of-an-era stop motion effects.
I'm not going to shit all over the new director's work without seeing it, but the themes he lists here were very much present in the original, not to mention being dealt with in greater depth in the various Robocop comicbook publications over the years.

There goes the social commentary that made the movie more than just a good action movie.

In other words...

But I will not repeat what Verhoeven has done because I SUCK SO BAD and could never meet his quality standards or creativity. Instead I try to make a film that will address topics that Verhoeven untreated, topics that will change Robocop into a tin-can pussy, worrying about leaking oil and battery fluid. Oh, and he wont kill people because we want PG-13."

What a dick. My interest for

What a dick. My interest for this project has gone out the window. The originals are classics because they work AS IS, even today.

I'm ready for another good Robocop movie. Sounds interesting enough. A robocop from the 2011 perspective would look a lot different with all the new technolgie. There is the potential for a great new story. If done right, that is...

Because RoboCop was not some comic book property (it's a brand, to be sure), I'm not clear on how to do a RoboCop without at least paying homage to Verhoeven's film. I take it Padhilla isn't going for a satirical tone. That's too bad, because if there is one thing that movie has over today's bunch of super-hero movies, it was the edge on the competition. Hell, it's one of the reasons RoboCop is one of the better action movies of the 1980s, because it so poked fun at corporate America, at a

It'll lack the wit

Plus you all know it's gonna be a watered down PG13 version. Noone can touch Verhoeven, the master of squibs.

Two Words

ELITE SQUAD. Judging by most of the comments, it seems that very few of you have seen it. Do yourself a favor and check it out. It EASILY eclipses most action/crime movies made stateside in the last 5 to 10 years.

I don't want to choose my side before there is really ANYTHING on this remake/reboot.....but redoing RoboCop will be a chore. PV's was a great flick, and stands as a nice period piece as well. I can just see this going in so many wrong ways; and it's so much easier to make crap than gold.

Didn't the first one solidly cover Robo's issue with his humanity? Was this douche even paying attention when he supposedly watched. Aranofsky directing the remake had me intrigued but now all I expect is some pg-13 CGI crapfest. They should just put the final nail in the coffin and cast Shia Lebouef (sp?) in the lead and have Michael Bay produce. Verhoeven's original is a sci-fi action classic.
