Joseph Fiennes to play Michael Jackson in 9/11 dramedy; pardon?

01.26.2016

Following the tragic events of 9/11, an improbable story emerged about three of the biggest names in entertainment. Several days before the attack, Michael Jackson was playing a concert at Madison Square Garden and he'd invited Elizabeth Taylor and Marlon Brando to join him. Then, after the towers fell and air-traffic to and from New York was cancelled, the trio rented a car and attempted to drive themselves back to California, getting as far as Ohio, or so the story goes. No one knows for certain whether any of this actually happened, but they're making a movie about it anyway.

The Guardian reports that ELIZABETH, MICHAEL, AND MARLON will be a one-off special airing on Sky Arts and star Joseph Fiennes as Michael Jackson, Stockard Channing as Elizabeth Taylor, and Brian Cox as Marlon Brando. This definitely sounds like something that I'm going to have to see to believe. Joseph Fiennes described the script as "a challenge," before adding "it’s a fun, lighthearted, tongue-in-cheek road trip of what celebrity of that kind is like. But also it’s rather beautiful and poignant about their relationships.

I guess the Fiennes brothers just have to play a pale character with horrendous looking noses at least once in their acting career.

Let's see. Making a movie (comedy?) about a road trip following the events of 9/11 with a white man starring as the King of Pop? This demonstrates the ignorance of the film industry when it comes to race. People are threatening to commit murder when a fictional character is made is played by a miniority, but an actual person being whitewashed? Yes! That's perfectly fine.

This will either be a tragic misfire or an odd gem. Casting a black actor for Jackson would be a bad move since he didn't even resemble a white guy during this time but some type of human/alien hybrid. I am very interested to see what Fiennes brings to the role. The other two parts are perfectly cast. I love Cox, has he ever been nominated?

Ignoring, for a moment, the elephant everyone wants to talk about, I must admit Stockard Channing is the perfect fit for Taylor, and I'm morbidly curious to see Brian Cox do Brando.

First, I couldn't really care less about this movie. However lighthearted this may be, get ready for the onslaught of outrage over a white dude playing Jackson. I get it, Jackson looked more white than black but come on..there's a thousand African American actors that can do spot-on Jackson impressions so why poss a bunch of people off and cast a white guy...and Fiennes of all people???

Hard to cast someone who was born as a black man and died as a white woman.

It's perfectly fine for a white guy to play Michael Jackson. Because it's pretty damn clear that Michael wanted to be white.

Well, if African American actors were pissed about the Oscar nominations, I can't imagine how enraged they will be after hearing this news.
Also, I've never heard of Sky Arts before. But based on the name, I assume they make films that are exclusively shown on commercial flights? I don't really care enough to look it up.

Sky is a multi-channel media group in the UK. As for your quip that they make films exclusively for commercial flights, I doubt they'd choose something related to 9/11.
