Joseph Gordon Levitt gets Cancer role from James McAvoy

03.02.2010

James McAvoy has dropped out of the untitled cancer comedy directed by Jonathan Levine. Taking his place will be another fine choice, Joseph Gordon Levitt.

Levitt will now take on the role as the friend of Seth Rogen's character who learns he has cancer.

A source close to the production told MTV that McAvoy dropped out for personal reasons and immediately snatched up Levitt for the role. Shooting had already started on the film in Vancouver, but is temporarily shut down until March 8th. MTV did confirm with Summit Entertainment on the new casting.

Rogen said this to say on the news: "Itís incredibly unfortunate that circumstances outside of everyoneís control have taken James away from the project, but, with Jamesís blessing, we were able to have Joseph step in to take on the [lead] role of Adam. We all look forward to working with James in the future." The film is based on the experiences of screenwriter Will Reiser, who waged his own battle with cancer when he was in his twenties. Rogen is producing with his writing partner Evan Goldberg. Anna Kendrick and Bryce Dallas Howard will co-star in the film.

"'I'm with Cancer' is a very personal story, about what happened to our friend for the most part," Rogen told MTV in a previous interview. "So we didnít really need much added insight into that. I was there with [Reiser] as he experienced a lot of it."

Extra Tidbit: Seth Rogen's five favorite films: THE BIG LEBOWSKI, GHOSTBUSTERS, THE LAST DETAIL, TOTAL RECALL, and GOODFELLAS.
