In today's unexpected news, Joseph Gordon-Levitt will be working with Lisa Henson in producing and starring in a Fraggle Rock film. The Jim Henson Company actually announced that they would be working on a Fraggle Rock movie back in 2005 but as you can see, it never quite came to fruition. For those of you wondering what the heck a Fraggle is, the show followed that of the tiny muppets (Fraggles) who played and explored in their underground home of Fraggle Rock alongside the industrious Doozers. They also lived near hairy humanoids called the Gorgs, and actual humans who they referred to as "silly creatures".

Joseph Gordon-Levitt had this to say:

The first screen personas I ever loved were Henson creations, first on ‘Sesame Street,’ and then on ‘Fraggle Rock.' Jim Henson’s characters make you laugh and sing, but they’re also layered, surprising, and wise. From Oscar the Grouch, to Yoda, to the Fraggles. I’ve never stopped loving his work, even as a young frisky man, and on into adulthood. Collaborating with Lisa Henson makes me confident we can do something that Jim would have loved. I’m grateful and excited to be working with New Regency on this project.

I'm not entirely sure what the demand is for a cinematic version of a TV show that debuted back in 1983, but I think it's kinda cool JGL is headlining the thing. He has to have some amount of passion for the mini-muppets, and while it's been 10 years in the making, the addition and star power of Gordon-Levitt should put this flick in the fast track. Now, if Joe wants to rally up some folks to push forward with a Dino-Riders movie, that would be just swell.
