Updated: Joseph Gordon-Levitt to produce Neil Gaiman's Sandman; will possibly star and direct

12.16.2013

UPDATED: Gordon-Levitt just posted this message on his official facebook page: "Ladies and gentlemen, I'm incredibly honored to be working with David Goyer, Warner Bros, and Neil Gaiman on SANDMAN. ‪#‎Prelude‬"

Recently we reported on a rumor from Badass Digest that David S. Goyer was pitching an adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Sandman with Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the star. Now Deadline is reporting that Gordon-Levitt will produce alongside Goyer, and is looking to star as well as direct. Goyer and Gordon-Levitt are currently finalizing the deal with Warner Bros.

Brief synopsis:

The Sandman series shifts between horror and fantasy, and the central character is Morpheus, the personification of dreams. After being held captive 70 years, Morpheus escapes, gains revenge and rebuilds his crumbling kingdom while trying to adapt to the times.

There have been attempts to get a Sandman movie made but Warner Bros. couldn't get the right vision of the material until now. They are looking for a writer to attach to the project.

Gordon-Levitt did great with his directorial debut DON JON though this would be an entirely different animal. I think if he's passionate about it then there's no reason that he shouldn't be given the opportunity. How are you guys feeling about him as Morpheus? I've always enjoyed the actor in an role he's ever taken so I'd be up for seeing his take on the character.

I know his name gets mentioned for every role these days, but Cumberbatch was born for Morpheus.

Emma Stone as Death!

JGL is a great actor, but my only concern is whether he has the physical stature to carry the role. But I'm sure he would give it his all. I'm cautiously optimistic about this.

However, I'm concerned that no one's thought of bringing in Neil Gaiman as the writer. He's no slouch when it comes to writing screenplays, and no one knows the character better.

It's safe to say he won't be Ant-Man then. Either one of them.

He'll own this role and make it his. Very exciting news. Can't wait to see the final product.

Franco? Really?

James Franco has nothing on JGL's movie sensibilities. He has proven himself over and over in indies as well as big budget movies, he's an awesome actor. He can make this great.

Are you replying to me?

Regardless of his acting abilities, JGL has yet to prove himself as a director, (nothing stood out about the direction in Don Jon.) Same with Franco. I used the comparison because Franco, as well, is buying up the rights to literary works to adapt himself.

I love both actors, but I personally think Franco is the better all around actor. Nothing Levitt has done has come close to the brilliant performance Franco gave in 127 Hours.

I have...and it's great. I just wish Levitt would do more indies like The Lookout, Mysterious Skin, Manic, Brick, etc.

I feel Franco does a better job splitting his time between the big budget affairs like Oz the Great and Powerful and low budget affair like The Iceman.

No.

This is almost as bad as Franco buying the rights and wanting to adapt so much of McCarthy's work.

I'm really glad young talent is being recognized in Hollywood and people are getting the opportunity to write, direct, and carry their own films - but some of these guys are getting way ahead of themselves and need to know when to step back and reevaluate their projects. Just because you have the means and the backing and the ambition does not mean you HAVE to adapt your favorite
No.

Where are the dads in Hollywood to tell these guys, 'whooaaaaaa now son, let's not get ahead of ourselves now."

Remains to be seen.

He's a decent choice lookwise, I don't know if he carries the gravitas needed for the role. My ideal choice was Cillian Murphy. I'd like to see who they cast in the other 6 Endless roles.
