Josh Brolin "hated" Jonah Hex

02.09.2016

Before shared universes were really a thing and there were machines that cranked out comic book movies with precision in order to serve the greater overall brand, movie studios were still trying to grab hold of something that was once popular or interesting on the page and turn it into a big-screen success that might be capable of shouldering a franchise. Along the way, we found a few hits, but there were plenty of misses - very bad misses - that were a by-product of throwing all of these comic properties at the wall and seeing what might stick.

JONAH HEX was one such miss. Based on a scarred character with a surly personality who still has the honor to defend the innocent, JONAH HEX was a Warner Bros. vehicle that they hoped would be the start of something great, riding the rise of Josh Brolin to Franchise-ville. It didn't turn out that way at all. In fact, if you listen closely to Brolin's recent interview with the Nerdist Podcast, he'll be very frank with what a disaster that picture was.

Oh, JONAH HEX, hated it. Hated it. The experience of making it — that would have been a better movie based on what we did. As opposed to what ended up happening to it, which is going back and reshooting 66 pages in 12 days and that being… Listen, I understand it’s financiers, you’re trying to save their money and it becomes a financial thing… I remember when I was talking to Warner Bros. about doing that movie, HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER is what I put on the TV, I said, ‘That’s what I wanna do.’ I would do that movie still ‘cause that’s the version of that movie that would have been successful, for sure. And it didn’t need to cost anything more than $8-10 million.

I guess you could say he's not a fan of JONAH HEX nor will you find any soft spot in his heart for the flick. The same can be said for anyone who's given up their time to watch it, so I guess that gives us all something in common with Josh Brolin from now until forever.

Yeah, Jonah Hex was one of those movies without a single redeeming quality. Remember when Thomas Jane was lobbying hard for the part? I bet he's glad he dodged that bullet.

Who would have Thunk

Josh Brolin is not a Movie star. He is a decent actor. He can't carry a movie. Movie Stars transcend the material. John Wayne, Steve McQueen, Sean Connery, Harrison Ford, they are Movie Stars. Josh, George Clooney, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, are not.

You are such a tool, what a stupid statement to make. Damon is widely credited with re-invigourating the Bond franchise with his Jason Bourne films which remain probably the best Spy trilogy out there, Clooney and Affleck are both probably 2 of the biggest stars of the post 90's film era and all 3 have won Oscars. Watch Martain and tell ,e Damon doesn't carry the material, watch Syrianna, the first Oceans and even Gravity, as for Affleck watch Argo, Gone Girl etc. Think before you speak

Optimus
I think Tomyg meant the Stars could transcend BAD materials, making them into descent movies (although I disagree about Ford), and that the others, are 'just' very good actors that can carry good material...
And every movies you quoted were (very) good material.

Everyone should check out this episode of Nerdist. I just listened to it tonight and Brolin has a lot of great stories and thinks farts are really, really funny (I agree).

Ugh, Jonah Hex was bullshit. WB was either taking cues from Fox at the time or they fucked up badly on their own.

Jonah Hex felt like they were trying to do everything as wrong as possible. It wasn't a good movie, the director sucked half the cast was miscast, the script was garbage. They were just throwing out as much junk as possible trying to ride the Super Hero wave.

When they don't put their hearts into it, comic book movies usually turn into shit like Ghost Rider or Xmen 3.

It's obviously not the best comic book film out there and has its flaws, but I found it to be fun for the most part with Josh Brolin making for a perfect Jonah Hex.

You can tell that the film had its problems when the final fight scene was mashed into actually two fights at the same time. If they were to ever do another attempt at this, then I would love to see Thomas Jane take a crack at it.
