Josh Gad to star in a big screen version of Gilligan's Island

Dec. 17, 2013by: Alex Maidy

Sit right back and you'll hear a tale about yet another classic television show getting the big screen treatment. GILLIGAN'S ISLAND (you know, LOST without the Smoke Monster?) is on it's way to a theater near you after years of development hell. Warner Bros. is working with a script written by Josh Gad,Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. The studio is also looking at Gad to star, most likely as Gilligan.

Gad has been building buzz with roles on TV and film for years now but it was his turn in Trey Parker and Matt Stone's musical BOOK OF MORMON that got him the most exposure. This year he appeared in the films JOBS opposite Ashton Kutcher, THE INTERNSHIP, THANKS FOR SHARING, and as the voice of Olaf the snowman in Disney's FROZEN. GILLIGAN'S ISLAND would be Gad's biggest starring role to date.

While GILLIGAN'S ISLAND was a family friendly sitcom that introduced young men the world over to the distinct choices in women (sexy Ginger or tomboy Mary-Ann) and the merits of making anything out of coconuts, the show was a campy joke. Still, it is a pop culture icon that could work in various ways as a movie. They could do a spoof of the old show like THE BRADY BUNCH MOVIE or something a little different like Will Ferrell's take on LAND OF THE LOST. Or, they could do the popular trend and make a gritty reboot.

Whatever direction they go in, GILLIGAN'S ISLAND is going to have to show something unique to warrant audiences shelling out to see it. We don't need another movie like THE SMURFS or SCOOBY DOO.

Josh Gad is so much better than this type of material. Should be interesting to see who else signs on for this film.

Maybe Christina Hendricks for Ginger?

Gilligan's Island is still on TV, and you know what? It's still great! People, even really young people, still watch and enjoy Gilligan--this is beyond unnecessary, and a total waste of talent for Josh Gad.

I'm hoping...

This is a "21 Jump Street" kind of remake as opposed to a "Dukes of Hazzard" one. I like Gad, but right now he seems to be filling the "funny fat guy" role that Jonah Hill used to occupy. Hopefully he can put together a decent script and push the film in the right direction. I'm not opposed to rebooting these old TV properties as long as they actually put some effort into bringing something new to the table.

Sounds like total garbage. Let me guess, the theme song will be remade by Lil Wayne And Akon spittin' some dope rhymes with Lady Gaga making a special appearance. (Obvious Sarcasm).

Hollywood is determined to force Josh Gad down our throats. Some people in a boardroom have decided he's great and by god, they'll make us love him. He was a painfully unfunny Daily Show correspondent - then he was off the show pretty quick. Then he got a terrible sitcom and it was canceled instantaneously. He was in the nearly unwatchable bomb JOBS. He writes an inane and obnoxious column for USA Today (and there are actual television commercials boasting about him as a columnist - guess what?

Those aren't funny either.) And now he gets to be Gilligan? What. The. Fuck.

Sorry, I'm a longtime Gilligan's Island fan and I've found Josh Gad truly untalented since his time on The Daily Show, so this news burns me up.

Will they ruin a classic? AGAIN

I am sorry but there is no way Josh Gad gets a staring role....he doesnt fit any of the character roles...I am sick and tired of Hollywood not caring about how to correctly cast for the role...plus where in the heck, does JOSH GAD have any kind of pull in Hollywood? To me, he hasnt been around long enough or have a qualifying resume to bring projects to Hollywood...I hope this movie is better cast before it goes into production.
