Joss Whedon lent a helping hand with Thor: The Dark World

Sep. 18, 2013by: Niki Stephens

Everyone needs a little help from time to time when it comes to a screenplay. A particular script can go through a hand full of writers at a time until the product desired is achieved. So if you're having problems with a comic script, who do you call? Well I can think of several people off the top of my head but the guy that might be at the number one spot is Joss Whedon.

Part of Whedon's three year deal with Marvel also meant that he should help those in need if necessary, those with comic book films anyway. Alan Taylor director of THOR: THE DARK WORLD said that they had to use Whedon has a life line on more than one occasion, "Joss came in to save our lives a couple of times. We had a major scene that was not working on the page at all in London, and he basically got airlifted in, like a SWAT team or something. He came down, rewrote the scene, and before he got back to his plane I sort of grabbed him and said, 'And this scene and this scene?' And he rewrote two other scenes that I thought had problems."

Taylor said the revisions, "were just much better and much lighter on their feet" than the earlier versions. They were apparently "much more fun, much more surprising than what we had been trying to do."

Thankfully, Whedon and Taylor were on the same page since they were TV brethren and all, "I can relate to guys who come out of the TV world, since that's where I come from. Being able to land and work and solve a problem quickly … I really was grateful."

Taylor is perfectly capable but since this is his first adventure into comic territory there's nothing wrong with getting a little help/advice. Whedon is definitely a good guy to get it from.

This isn't a good sign... But when you have Whedon on contract for 3 years you might as well use him every chance possible. I wonder ifWheddonn was okay with the final Iron Man 3 scrreenplay?

And James Spader as the main villain of the next Avengers movie..... Uhhhh, what? I guess they'll cast Bill Shatner as RDJ's replacement as Iron Man since Shane Black showed us that he isn't Iron man anymore. So dumb.

To me Affleck is better than Whedon when it comes to overall talent. He directed AND starred in multiple awesome movies. Whedon just could never be on that level.

Joss Whedon

I'm very excited for the new Thor movie just because of the involvement the director has had with Game of Thrones.......... But, I just don't like Joss Whedon. The Avengers was very entertaining, like very very entertaining but other than that it really did nothing. It just kills me to see such support for a movie that seemingly leveled a whole city while there was hate for a movie that actually showed what would happen (Man of Steel). I just don't see why Joss Whedon is the God amongst boys

It makes Joss sound like a great guy plus....

......it gives me even more hope that Thor will be an outstanding movie. I enjoyed the last one, but it simply wasn't at the level of Iron Man or The Avengers. It's good to hear that when they thought they had a problem, they called someone as skilled as Joss, and it's really cool that he flew out to try to help.

I always figured that all of the directors must work together to some small extent since all of the flicks take place in the same universe & tie in to an Avengers movie, but this is really cool. Joss has to be 1 of the busiest guys in Hollywood & he goes & helps out. Dig it. Much respect for Whedon.

I like reading stories like this. Directors helping out other directors. And plus, I'm sure Whedon has a helping hand in all of the films to make sure what he has planned for his Avenger films actually goes as planned and so that none of his storylines get disrupted or messed up.

That is awesome that he is helping out, but I almost get the feeling that Whedon is like "my movie is more important so you guys have to do what I say and work around what I am doing."

Blame it on Kevin Feige. He's the one corralling all these different characters into one movie universe. Whedon's just the luck guy picked to head their combo movies.

@Hoylehaw: more like Kevin Feige remembered his Management 101 lesson: find the right people for the job and then get the hell out of their way.
