Joss Whedon on potentially killing off major characters in The Avengers: Age of Ultron

Aug. 26, 2013by: Jesse Giroux

The Avengers: Age of Ultron

Joss Whedon teased that there will be, "Death, death and more death!" in THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, but was he talking about Thanos or possibly taking out a member of the superhero team? In the newest issue of Entertainment Weekly, the director was asked if he might kill off one of the Marvel characters in the upcoming film. His response is classic Whedon:

I’m always joking about that. Um…maybe?

Whedon goes on to say that if he was going to kill off a major character it would have to be approved by Marvel, who may not be too keen on cutting a leg off of their cash cow:

But I’d have to have a really good reason, a really great sequence for [Marvel executives] to go, ‘We’ll cut off a potential franchise, that’s fine!’ They know as any good studio does, that without some stakes, some real danger, how involved can we get? We don’t just rule it out across the board, but neither is the mission statement ‘Who can we kill?’ We try to build the story organically and go, ‘How hard can we make it on these people?’ You go to the movies to see people you love suffer-that’s why you go to the movies.

Based on Whedon's comments, Captain America, Thor and Hulk are probably safe, but there's a chance Hawkeye, Black Widow or one of the new additions could be dead by the end of THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. And although Iron Man is obviously the biggest money maker with his solo films, there's already been three movies with that character. Would Marvel have the balls to kill off Iron Man? Only time will tell, but even if they do it's not like superheroes haven't come back from the dead before in comics, so any that do die could very easily rise from the dead. Just like Jesus, the original superhero.

THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON is scheduled to be released on May 1st, 2015.

Extra Tidbit: Which character (or characters) do you think might kick the bucket in THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON?

Captain America

In addition to my comment about it not being Iron Man for obvious reasons, I just thought about it and Captain America seems like a good candidate, considering Winter Soldier will introduce Bucky, and he can take over Cap's job, at least until he is no doubt resurrected somehow.

I'm A Leaf On The Wind...

...watch it be Thor.

Sorry guys, I couldn't resist.

Considering the topic of the article...I just wanted to give a tip of the hat to my favorite Whedon character & his balls - shatteringly sudden demise. RIP Wash.

Iron Man wont die because they already used that in the first one by teasing us that he wasn't going to make it after his "sacrifice" and then he survives, so using him again wont have the same emotional impact. It's someone elses turn.

funny fact, all but two episodes Whedon wrote for the spinoff series Angel had a major character die. which is considered by many to be the tell-tale sign of a poor writer, which I personally think he is.

Also, Downey wants out bad, so he'll die either in the next one or the third one. Probably the third one.

Whedon is not shy in killing off his characters (the death of Buffy's mother was always a pretty good one...coz it had nothing to do with anything Buffy did - though Wash in Serenity was pretty cool...coz, initially, you'd thought they all survived the crash - didn't see it coming). He's also not aversed to gravely injuring his heroes either - the taking off Xander's eye was a pretty intense moment. The difference, however, is those characters were his creations - he was free to do what he

Marvel wouldn't let him do that ...not without a backdoor escape route - heck, I'm, still in the camp that's disappointed by the cheapening of Coulson's death in Avengers Assemble by bringing him back for the TV series...though strangely, I'm glad they have - what a effing oxymoron!

They are going to kill...

Iron man. Then when they pull his dead body out of the suit shit will come pouring out of his suit as well. They explain it by saying he lost control of his bodily functions upon death. I've already seen leaked footage.

I'll believe it when The Avengers 3 is released

Spoiler Alert for those who have not seen The Avengers. "Kill off"? We'll see. Whedon already killed off one character in The Avengers, and now he's suddenly back from the dead! Agent Coulson. Whedon can say someone will be killed off in The Avengers 2 but who's to say that character won't just suddenly come back with their own spin-off sitcom? It's a sequel, and the formula/mood for the second part is usually suppose to be darker, edgier, and the starting point where anyone can be killed off.

Just a few cents worth....

I seldom post anything.... BUT.... I think everyone should really read the comics before jumping the gun about possibilities in Marvel movies. If I was Whedon, I would kill every character I could off in this movie. For one good reason. Lady Death. She is (or should be) in these upcoming movies because of Thanos. It is also highly probable because Marvel is not only expanding their scope on Earth's heroes but the entire universe. We should be seeing the Watcher and all the other

It is also highly probable because Marvel is not only expanding their scope on Earth's heroes but the entire universe. We should be seeing the Watcher and all the other omnipotent beings soon. Why kill all the heroes sent on this mission to take down Thanos? What better way to have the SECOND STRING of Avengers to come to the rescue! You think Fury has one team? Ol' One-eye prepares for everything! This is a way that could bring the "New Avengers" in, have a tie-in with X-Men/Spider-Man, find a way to "cheat" death so they can resurrect their fallen heroes and voila! you have an old fashioned slobber knocker with all the heroes you could want clobberin' some baddies. Just as in Empire Strikes Back, it looks like the good guys lose but the 2nd stringers come in to save the day (Lando, Ewoks, the REST of the Rebel Alliance) in Return/Revenge of the Jedi.

it's got to be Hawkeye (what with all the negative comments Renner made after the last film).

LIke he said, its not killing a character, its potentially killing a franchise. With that said, wouldnt rule out Iron Man not sticking around

I'd like to see Tony Stark killed off in the next Avengers movie, I like the character I just think it would be a shocker like Wash being killed in Serenity that would be good for the movie to show there's actual danger for the main characters.

I choose to believe this means they're going to kill Thor, replace him with Beta Ray Bill and confuse the f*ck out of everyone. When Avengers 2 comes out you can thank me for the heads up.

Death doesn't mean killing off the franchise

Movies can continue to be made for a character that dies in the Avengers. It will just be set before the character actually dies. Therefore anyone can die.

Hawkeye seems too predictable, but I could see him biting the dust. But Nick Fury and Captain America come to mind the most--especially if there's potential for Stark taking over SHIELD in his absence.

Didn't Iron Man 3 already kill off Iron Man. It certainly killed my interest in the character (as far as films go).

Since they are places as the two major characters in the next one, it's possible that it might be Clint or Natasha.

I hope it's both Hawkeye and Black Widow. They seemed so out of place in the big fight scene at end of Avengers. Iron Man can fly and shoot rockets, Thor has his hammer, Hulk goes Smash, and then you have Hawkeye shooting fucking arrows. And what seems to be an unlimited amount of arrows like he keeps pulling them out of his ass.

I hate to say this

For dramatic reasons I would find it interesting if they "killed off" Tony Stark by the end of the movie but in a suspenseful and non final way. For example he sacrifices himself (again) for the team and we see his armor blow up, maybe in a final attempt to destroy Ultron, but his body is not recovered. The team assumes that he was incinerated on the blast and mourn the lost. Then in the next Cap movie or Avengers sequel someone finds him alive. Explain it by bringing up a teleportation

Explain it by bringing up a teleportation technology or something similar that pulled Tony out of the suit before detonation. In fact it would be a good way to bring back Red Skull and Arnim Zola similar to the new Avengers cartoon where Tony believed Red Skull vaporized Cap but instead he teleported him to a secret base. Do the same thing with Tony and have Skull try to force him into building new tech for him. It would be a way to build suspense and not hurt the existing sequel properties since there are no current IM4 plans on the table. Obviously there are thousands of ways to do this besides what I said and much better ones at that but it would be a way to actually increase the popularity of the character like have Cap refuse to believe that he is dead and a new "Search for Stark" arc begins. Just a thought.

I don't know it feels like Joss Whedon is talking TOO much about the Age of Ultron at this stage. I mean, the film isn't out fora while, and they haven't even really begun filming. It is time to ease off a bit, Joss. I get that he is excited about this, probably more than anything else he's done. You get that instantly. There is love passion and energy in the project. After what we've learned about it, that is enough to hold us over until they have some material.

Kill The X-Men

They don't have the rights anyway. They don't have to use the names, just have Thanos or Ultron destroy a "school" and then have bodies that might resemble a guy in a wheelchair, a red head, a blue hairy guy, etc. It would be a nice little "F-U" to Fox.

I could actually see....

one of the 'Big Four' being killed off in this film.

Downey Jr announced his return for both Age of Ultron and Avengers 3... but what if that was just a decoy so we wouldn't 'expect' him to be killed off? If Stark is the one who creates Ultron, Ultrong could well end up killing him?

Looking elsewhere, I believe I'm correct in saying Chris Evans signed a 6 movie deal (3 Captain Americas and 3 Avengers), but do we know what Chris Hemsworth deal is?

From my understanding there are

From my understanding there are going to 4 films between Avengers 2 and 3. We know the first is Ant-Man. There are also strong suggestions that Doctor Strange will be another. So that easily leaves Captain America 3 and Thor 3... but what if the next announcement we get is the Black Panther film OR the new DareDevil reboot? That leaves just one more slot to fill. Unless we're going to get team-up films (In all fairness, I could see Captain America being the most likely, maybe travel him abit and introduce him and the audience to Black Panther?) if not, that means they've got to shelve a franchise and my money is on Thor.

If any of the main guys are too risky though, yeah I too could see Hawkeye getting the chop. Any of the new characters won't have the impact that an established character would. Do we know if Don Cheadle is likely to put in an appearance? War Machine/Iron Patriot could get the chop now the Iron Man films are done?

In the comic-book world, no one REALLY dies

I love Joss and almost everything he's done. I stand by the balls he has in killing off people - but never "just for show". It helps shake up the rest of the survivors and makes the viewer go "oh fuck, who knows what might happen next?"
And so, I have faith that if someone does "die", it's for the story and it works well. Then again, being based on comics, there's ALWAYS a way to bring them back from the dead.

As the stakes get higher in these movies, especially in The Avengers, the writers have to start wondering how invincible these superhero's truly are. But Marvel would most definitely have to give the ok to kill off any character, which I doubt they're ready for that in Age of Ultron.

Exactly...

It takes a lot away from a film if there's no real sense of danger. Considering the whole RDJ playing iron man will-he-won't-he situation, he'd make the biggest impact with his loss, but it would be an answer to the whole 'who is gonna play him next...' puzzle.
