Joss Whedon on The Avengers 2: "Death, Death and more Death!"

Feb. 25, 2013by: Jesse Giroux

Whedon

Joss Whedon is going to be hitting the film festival circuit soon to promote MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, his adaptation of the William Shakespeare play, and you know that that means right? Yep, plenty of opportunities for people to dig information about THE AVENGERS 2 out of him. Whedon was at the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival to receive a Volta award and attend the European premiere of his adaptation. A couple of people from The Movie Bit were at the screening and the Q&A that followed, and of course someone asked Whedon about THE AVENGERS 2. He responded with:

I cant do any bigger, so Im trying to do better.

When asked what his philosophy would be for the sequel, apparently a giant shit-eating grin appeared on Joss Whedon's face and he said:

Death, death, and more death!

Well what could this mean? Is Joss Whedon hungry for more blood after killing Agent Coulson? Is he going to kill off another fan favorite? Or maybe he is referring to the Thanos cameo at the end of THE AVENGERS (see video below) and in doing so hinting that Mistress Death will indeed have a major part in the sequel?

Lots of time to speculate, since THE AVENGERS 2 isn't going to be released until May 1st, 2015.

What he's referring to is

Thanos's relationship with Lady Death and the lengths he goes to to win her favor. In the comics he collects the Ininity Gems and makes the Infinity Gauntlet. Then he snaps his fingers and wipes out literally half the universes population! Now how it all goes in the films will be interesting.

Or at least thats my guess.

We're in the Golden Age of comic book movies. We are lucky nerds, indeed.

My Lady Death is way hotter than Thanos' Lady Death.

I was there for that. What he in fact said was "Death, Death, DEATHY, Death, Death."

not cryptic

I dont think he is referring to any character with Death in their name, but is actually intending on killing off at least 3 characters. Most likely these are minor characters who may have not even been introduced yet. I am hoping for something scaled down from the first one.

He'll be killing people off. Anybody who follows Whedon's work should know he loves to put his protagonist's through as much pain as possible and that usually means killing off lots of characters close to the heroes. Look out Gwenyth Paltrow

I could see either Paltrow, Maria Hill, Nick Fury, Hawkeye or Black Widow being killed. More likely the former than the later.

Just give us a scene where Hulk and/or Thor throw down against Thanos.

And a better story for Hawkeye please.

Fooood for thought

What we know...
They have a Planet Hulk movie in the works for Phase 3, so my first guess is Hulk kills someone and that's the reason he's sent off of Earth.

Cap is also a possibility to die, since you know, he dies in the comics, and they are introducing Winter Soldier.

Also wouldn't rule Iron Man out either since they hinted at that in the first Avengers and well Downey can't do these movies forever can he?

Death could also represent Thano's love interest

If Whedon were to kill some characters off, I could easily see Hawkeye and Nick Fury being top picks. But if he wanted to be completely ballsy, I'd say kill off Captain America or Thor. I don't think Captain America has many sequels left in him and I don't see Red Skull making a return anytime soon.

@ HoyleHaw Loki taunts Thor in Marvel's The Avengers. He says that Midgardians believe that Asgardians are immortal. Loki suggests putting that posit to the test. Then, he drops Thor out of the Helicarrier. Perhaps, Thor can die.

I think it would be pretty dumb to kill off Thor and/or Captain America. Infact, if they kill off ANY of the four core main characters, it would be dumb. Would you really want to see Captain America or Iron Man die?

Just because I'm not all up-to-date with the Avengers mythology, is it possible to kill Thor? He IS a god, after all.

Ah yes, the classic kill someone off in the sequel and bring them back in the following sequel. It's been done with Jack Sparrow, Spock, Jean Grey, and Han Solo (kind of, he was frozen in carbonite). I'm sure that will be the case here, someone "dies" in Avengers 2 and is brought back in phase 3. Maybe a supporting character would permanently die, but I don't think a main hero would be killed off. Maybe Hawkeye, because no one would really miss him.

Not true. I would miss him. Granted he's not as cool as Iron Man, Thor, etc. but he's still badass and cool in his own right.

The infinity gauntlet gives the wearer power over all of existence including life and death. If Thanos does indeed get it he can kill the entire main cast and bring them back before the end of the movie. In the comic series he actually succeeds in killing off all but 6 of the heroes (some in very gruesome ways) only for them to be brought back once the heroes claim the gauntlet for themselves.

I'm gonna come out of left field & say...

Thor.

I mean, to the rest of the team...there could be that scene when they're faced w/ the devastating fact of thinking: "Damn, if our GOD can be killed...how safe are we?"

Tidbit: "I'm a leaf on the wind...watch how I soar."

Maybe kill Thor and have him replaced by a horse-faced alien - nobody's ever thought of that before...

Dollars to Donuts....

But my money is on Iron Man if they kill anyone.

and this is based on two ideas that have been circling the Marvel movie universe for a little while now. The first being that, and they have said this in the past, the idea of Tony Stark not flying the Iron Man suit after RDJ is done, which leads into the second idea. However, that contract would be either done after Avengers 2, or Avengers 3... I'm not quite sure if he signed up for both. But seeing as his final solo act will be this summer, I wouldn't be to surprised if they bump him off in his second rodeo with the team.

That sounds great! At least...it sounds great as long as Straczynski and Queseda don't get their hands on future scripts and have Mephisto undo everything :p
