Joss Whedon passed on Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot back in 2009

Dec. 1, 2010by: Niki Stephens

When the news of the BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER reboot came about, riots ensued. People were running through their hometowns filled with rage armed with pitchforks and molotov cocktails looking to make someone pay. How dare they give Buffy a new face and on top of all that hire another writer that isn't Joss Whedon!

WHAT IS THIS F*CKERY?!!!!!

But wait. Joss already knew about this "reboot" back in 2009. While we're at it, I want to also put it out there that we are talking about rebooting the movie from 1992 that starred Kristy Swanson as the Buffster. I quite enjoyed that movie and Kristy Swanson, but as a Buffy fan, Sarah Michelle Gellar will always in my heart be the chosen one.

So word is that back in 2009, BUFFY rightsholders Fran Rubel Kuzui and husband Kaz Kuzui started developing the reboot with Vertigo. Whedon was presented with the opportunity to get in on it but passed to do other projects like THE AVENGERS. After getting the no from Whedon, the producers went in search of another writer. They decided to hire actress turned screenwriter Whit Anderson to take on the job. Anderson's new take on the Buffy mythos impressed the producers so much that they decided to keep it and present it to studios.

Fox, who originally distributed the movie in '92, passed on the film. Warner Bros. immediately pounced on it based on the logic that Whedon or no Whedon, people would still flock to see the Buffy reboot. Dislike.

It doesn't matter whether you are rebooting the series or the movie, the character is so iconic and beloved by fans. While Whedon may not be a blonde teenage girl, he is the essential part of Buffy who gives the character her voice. Whedon says no, I say no. What do you say? "Does the word "duh" mean anything to you?"

Extra Tidbit: Alyssa Milano was originally set to play Buffy back in '92.

Although I'm opposed to the vast majority of remakes, in this particular case I honestly just don't get the point. Buffy and Angel were both excellent and the potential for an epic meeting of the two casts is huge. It just seems, looking at it from a business perspective, that would be the more successful way to go--think of the huge fanbase that exists for both of those shows. It's pretty depressing that they're just going to throw it all in the garbage and start all over.

I'd rather see an adaptation of Fray. Buffy is still too fresh to attempt to reboot... but then, that doesn't really matter to the world of Hollywood, does it?

If they could at all differentiate this from a reboot of the WB TV show, I'll bet the ire for this project would be much less. While I enjoyed the '92 movie for what it was, as evidenced by the massive success of that show, the film isn't sacred by any means.

Oh, fuck it. Like I care anyway.

Is it just me or the word 'reboot' isnt used properly in this article ? I always thought you had to have a franchise - or a potential one - to call a remake a reboot, and its definately not the case here. Its just one movie being remade. Its like saying Ocean's Eleven was a reboot. Makes no sense. Anyways.

They are talking about "rebooting" the character. The franchise was in the show. Now, if they try to pick up where the show left off then you are correct. If they start from scratch, I would say that is rebooting.

I'd rather see a Buffy movie with the old cast from the television show combined with the cast of "Angel". Movie would be awesome.

Buffy was always an annoying show with Faith and Spike being the coolest characters, I don't care about this. Just make a good remake.

TBH, I never watched Buffy when it was on so I'm much happier knowing that Whedon, who I like for Firefly and Serenity, will be doing Avengers rather than going back and rebooting his own franchise. I mean, even if Whedon was doing this movie, it would still be a reboot of the franchise, right? It's not like he was going to continue with the same cast and continue the story.

So rather than start all over again on something he's already handled for many years, why not let him spread his

But the studio wanted a reboot. Having the same cast wouldn't be a reboot, it would be a sequel. From what I'm reading here, it doesn't seem like there was any chance of the cast returning. I may be wrong though.

Who knows, maybe if Whedon did reboot the franchise, then maybe he could have gotten the old cast back together.

Just to shed some light

I believe that the reason they can't get back the TV cast and such, is because the people behind this remake only have rights for the original Buffy movie.

Meaning the only character they can use, is the Buffster herself. Spike, Xander, Angel, Giles, Cordelia, Williow, Anya, Tara, Andrew, Jonathan, Dawn, Faith, Wesley, Gunn, Fred, Illiriya, etc, etc are all owned by the companies that produced the TV series.

It basically feels like someone's nabbed the rights for the original movie, and

Fuck them.

Joss Whedon is a She-Male

Joss Whedon is a writer full of shit and is responsible for the vampires we know today: Gay Ass Vampires. Whedon you suck. Please leave your gay pussy hands from movies like Captain America and Avengers. You wrote an Alien Script that was even inferior to the AVP Movies, and don't even take the blame for it.

Not really. The vampires in both those shows are uggo-faced, fanged mouth, soulless demons. They ate babies for Chrissakes.

Of course he turned it down. He spent eight years turning a movie that was ruined by the Kazuis into two awesome television shows, and they want him to erase all of that with his own hand and sign up to get screwed again?

This is ridiculous. I hope its straight to DVD. I wish nothing but ill will on this project.
