Joss Whedon says he has no one in mind for Batgirl…yet.

Now that a BATGIRL movie is officially in the early stages of development with Joss Whedon behind the pen and at the helm, all fans can do is hope and dream for the perfect casting. We here already came up with our dream list, with starlets like Jane Levy, Emma Roberts and Hailee Steinfeld taking top honors. However, Whedon himself has zero names in mind for the role, as finding the character herself takes top priority.

While walking the star-studded purple carpet at the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY premiere, Whedon was asked by Variety if he had anyone in mind for the top role. The writer/director didn’t offer any names, citing how the character needs to come alive in the script first:

I don’t have my eye on anybody. I feel like I’m creating this character, I’m gonna dialogue with her and then we’ll see who joins that later on… I doubt it will be a name. This is somewhere where you go and find Batgirl and then you cast her.

What some may gather from this is that Whedon is not interesting of hiring a “star”, opting instead for someone that would more of an unknown to mainstream audiences. But Whedon does not shy away from working with heavy hitters (see THE AVENGERS), so hiring a dashing starlet is not out of the question:

I’m not against movie stars, they’re great, but you need somebody who’s going to be just right. And a situation like this, the name carries a lot of weight, so its not as critical.

I agree with Whedon in that a star is not needed to bring noteriety to Batgirl. The character is so iconic that she’ll sell herself, and the actress will flesh her out. We see this happen all the time, with mostly unfamiliar names like Chris Hemsworth and Tom Holland taking on roles like Thor and Spider-Man. I’m personally for Levy or Steinfeld, if we’re going off our choices, and I think given how Whedon writes his characters either one could fit the bill. Hear our pleas, Joss Whedon. We're putting our dreams in your hands.
