Joss Whedon says there's no interest in an Age of Ultron director's cut

Writer/director Joss Whedon was very open about the fact that AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON's initial cut was pushing 3 hours. For anyone who's seen Marvel's last flick, you could probably tell a few of the character's had some screen time chopped (Thor anyone?). Blu-ray/DVD has popularized Extended and Director's Cuts, and while a longer AGE OF ULTRON felt like an eventual given, Whedon had a few things to state that suggests the opposite.

Joss Whedon on whether or not a director's cut of ULTRON is in the works:

It has always been my ambition never to do a director’s cut of anything, and always to make the movie with the studio that we both want to make. Ultron was very complex. There was a lot of back-and-forth. My instinct is no. Just as an artist, I’m super fucking lazy and that sounds like it would be hard. I don’t think there’s interest in it, right now. You’ll see a bunch of stuff on the DVD in extras that were meant to be there. But the narrative came together very close to the way that I hoped it would, and I don’t think it needs me to constantly tweak it. I feel you put something out, and there it is. The first time I ever heard a re-mix, I was 13 and I was listening to the radio. I heard a song that had been re-mixed and it freaked me out so much that I turned off the radio and never listened to it since, literally. That is an actual truth. I felt like, “Wait, that was the song. You can’t do that.” Our entire culture consists of doing exactly that, but I’m not for it. If I tell a story, I want that to be the story I told. Ultron may have some transitions that I’m not 100% on board with. It’s also one of the most ridiculously personal things I’ve ever put on screen. The fact that Marvel gave me that opportunity and supported it, I’m very happy and very proud of everybody that worked on it. I don’t feel the need to go in and fix. I feel like, there she is.

While it's clear that there was some scenes cut from ULTRON, I don't think adding them back in is necessarily going to make the movie any better. That film has its fair share of problems outside of stuff that we didn't see. While it'd be nice to have an extended or director's cut for the fans, throwing the deleted scenes on a supplementary disc will probably suit me just fine. As far as the future is concerned, I'm curious to see what the Russo's do with the current line-up of Avengers in CIVIL WAR and AVENGERS 3! Product placement at it's finest: even when an artist draws a scene that never occurred in the movie, we get a Reebok logo under Cap's suit - Genious!

Too bad

Re-working it might make it worth watching again. If not, then I won't see it again until it hits Netflix.

There's a lot they could change about this film that would improve it, and I didn't even hate the movie, but short of them redesigning and reworking Ultron's role considerably, AOU is always going to be a tad disappointing.
I like Whedon's work, but AOU seems like a movie he didn't have enough control over and so he didn't enjoy the experience as much and the film suffered as a result.
Out of the whole Marvel cinematic universe deal, it's Thor that surprises me the most. That they've released

Out of the whole Marvel cinematic universe deal, it's Thor that surprises me the most. That they've released two movies with another on the way is kinda odd - I've enjoyed both Thor movies for what they were, but short of Ragnarok being amazing and really justifying the journey, a trilogy for Thor really seems like overkill. I'd've thought it would have run out of steam way before the likes of Iron Man and Hulk, as a concept. Good cast helps I suppose.

To me AOU is just like Dark Knight Rises, a squeal that had so much potential but failed to deliver on it. Both films are terrible.

This what happens when "management" starts to interfere with your work. You get pissed off and stressed. No wonder he sounds bitter after working on this film. Anyone would. Should of trusted him to DIRECT HIS film and everyone else should take a back seat, hey Kevin.F. Then he would of made a film with more impact.

Christ. Is there a more pretentious whiner in popular entertainment than Whedon? It's cool that he bitched for months and leaked to the press what an awful time he had with AoU because of Marvel's meddling, and now that he could potentially rectify-- and improve what was a pretty mediocre movie for the real fans--he says it's the movie he wanted all along and a new cut is stupid.

I hope he has a keg of Zoloft on tap at his mansion.

I wanted to love Ultron, but I ended up just "liking" it. it was by no means a terrible movie, but it was a letdown after Winter Soldier and the original Avengers. Ultron himself was one of, if not the most, limp dicked villains we have seen in a Marvel movie. He really never felt like a threat to me, or at least certainly not the threat he was in the comics. But I gotta say Whedon of late has turned into a bitter pric. Yeah Marvel wanted some specific cues in this movie to lead up to their

But to get all pissy about it when you know what you were signing up for? Wow. Way to be a dick Whedon.

Age of Ultron was an awful movie. It's one of the worst films of the summer. I'd like to believe that there's a better version of the film on the cutting room floor somewhere, but it's looking like we'll never see it.

An extended cut with scenes added back in could have added more context that felt missing here.

I don't know I wish Marvel would have let Whedon release the film as he intended because the editing for Ultron was kinda strange, you can tell alot was cut. I would have been perfectly fine seeing a 3 hour long version. It really did hurt the film in the end.

Not all director's cuts need to be about fixing. Take lord of the rings, their extended editions simply add some back scenes appreciated by fans of the book, but not necessary to the overall plot. I am curious to see how many deleted scenes make the blu-Ray, since the last few marvel films didn't have many.

I personally think they hold back on putting all the deleted scenes on the blurays because they don't want the backlash from fans. They only put a few on there that seem like they wouldn't fit.

Wow!!

What the hell happened to Whedon?! It seems like he is depressed or something. I hope he doesn't go out and do something bad to himself in the coming weeks. On another note, it's not what he wants it what the fans want. Just do the damn Director's Cut. He says he is too fucking lazy and that is his excuse?! Sorry pal, nobody is going to hire a director if they say that out loud. I remember he mentioned something before the movie was released stating he was upset with Marvel because they

Age of Ultron was a pretty big letdown. It wasn't a terrible film by any means, but it lacked any depth, Ultron as a threat was a literal joke, and the side stories--specifically Thor--were unsatisfying.

I agree Thor was barely in it & the scene where he goes to that one place (forget the name) was kinda awkward. Definitely wasn't bad as you said, but I expected so much more given how great the first Avengers was.

This is what happens when a dream turns into a nightmare.

He sounds pretty bitter, I hope he enjoys himself and gets some "him" time. I hope he comes back reinvigorated and wants to get back on the train. He just sounds so fucking bitter and drained. I wonder if Marvel makes you sign a NDA on bitching about working for them among other things.

That's too bad. The movie could have definitely have benefited from it (especially Thor's storyline and perhaps Ultron too).
